How was the race? Did you like your teammates? What was Section E like? I heard it had some weird metals that made your compass spin.

Everything was great except for my teammates. They talk too much. I tried to walk them off the map and leave them in a river but they followed me back.

Hah hah! Teammates schmeammates! I too eagerly await the report, yours are always fun to read.

I imagine you will want to be sticking with family this coming weekend, but if perchance you go orienteering at Hickory Run on Sunday, look for me, I’ll be there.

Thanks for sharing, Glen - really enjoyed your recap! And congrats to you, Rebekah, and Noah on the new teammate :)

1. Re "news of mine and Rebekah's soon-to-be-born second child, coming in March!":

I read the comments before the report, and wondered who the heck abiperk was referring to. Sneaky of you to embed the big news way down in Stage 5 of a long report. Congratulations!!!

2. Re "return to orienteering more frequently":

That would tickle your uncle's fancy, I might even see you now and then. I was going to insist that you attend DVOA's national O event in March, except that referring back to point 1, I now realize that the timing might not be ideal. How about the first weekend of November O events?--should be pretty high quality stuff.

3. Re "Race has been reported. Enjoy!":

You've set a pretty high standard of reports that at first glance seem overly long and detailed such that one is tempted to skim or skip, but I've learned they're absolutely worth reading all the way through. Good thing I did pay attention to all of this one, otherwise I might have missed point 1!

Thanks all - super excited to finally be able to field an official team of 4!

Abiperk - hope you are healing quickly!

o-maps - it's easy to post good news on Facebook. It's much sneakier to slide it into a verbose attackpoint entry. I have to get my o-calendar sorted out, but I'm hoping to be a much more frequent attender than I was this year (not at all hard).

Great report, you sound like you have some truly amazing teammates :) Although Kate got a mention for her beesting while absolutely no mention of my own sting at the end of the big O-loop?

But seriously, my takeaways from the race:
1) When are we ever going to have a race where all three of us feel good at the same time?
2) I feel really badly for not being more forceful about noticing the ridgeline going in the wrong direction during our fatal E mistake. But honestly, besides the 20-30 minute delay in taking the long way, it was really just horrible luck not to find E2, which would have given us E1.
3) Transitions can definitely get faster, but I was being very intentional about trying to make sure none of us blew up. And it worked! I had a dream the night before that Rootstock would have a catastrophically bad race and only beat us by 1 CP and so my plan worked to perfection.
4) We need to remember that when we're feeling bad, it could be do to overheating. It happened to both Kate and you, even while we were actively telling my Sea to Sea story to each other! Somehow we always blame our stomachs but it's really due to overlayering.
5) I still stop heaping pressure on you nav-wise before races, even in jest. You are such a sensitive soul (as am I) and you take the weight of the world on your shoulders. We are a team out there, mistakes don't need to be apologized for - we know you're not making them on purpose! I always think you're joking when you beat yourself up for hours after a mistake, but I'm starting to think you're at least partially serious. I will stop pressuring you in a joking way about nav before races if you promise to get over any mistakes you make faster. Heck, even with Kate and me on the maps, we still messed up E. It's a team sport.
6) Sorry I couldn't give you more positive vibes after your big announcement. I was pooped. CONGRATS!

Importantly, you failed to note we were by far the fastest team from CP 19 to CP 20.

Also interesting to note we would have been at least 45 minutes behind in the paddle had we finished it (more like 1 hr+) and we lost a lot of time on the the Leg D bike. I felt we were crushing the paddle but apparently not (too much stargazing?) And we could all get faster on technical MTB. But the O-course was great! Though Quest still did it more than 2 hours faster than us...

Despite the evidence to the contrary, my mind can never be convinced to remove a layer - it always wants to eat!!

I do carry all of the weight on myself. Everyone has a thing in AR - maybe this can be my thing?

I think the nightness of the paddle probably was to blame for 30 minutes of that time.
