of ‘racing off' (adrenalized) to the first control (esp at an A meet one flew or drove many miles to) only to lose (much) too much time. I’ve been there. I was pretty good at it:-).
Eventually I learned being pedantic got me there faster the majority of the time. I considered it warming up to map and course with a satisfactory start.
Did exactly that on the second day (pedantic to the first control). Got me in the mindset that I spiked the next 12 controls, so a bit of extra time to the first control paid back well. Of course I learned the hard way on the third day that after hitting the first control you still need to keep the focus for the next one.
