Thanks to UNO for a fabulous weekend at a great venue! Getting to ride the chairlift to the start was a treat, and running through New England woods surrounded by all the colors of fall was very special. Having Ed and Valerie's live results setup and music helped give the competition the feel of an Event, which was much appreciated.

Yes, thank you! It was a great event, made even better by the excellent amenities.

All credit goes to Ed for the live results and music! He even did beagle wrangling on the side, while I competed and rode the mountain coaster.

(Thanks to Boris as well for taking the beagles out and about while I was on my course. They slept like rocks when they got home.)

Thank you UNO for another excellent meet! We loved the opportunity to ride the chair to the top and witness the spectacular view.

I can't agree more! Fun terrain and courses, beautiful foliage, and such a family friendly venue! We bought our kids a pass for unlimited mountain coaster rides after their runs on Sat and didn't see them again until the thing closed at 4 pm :)

A little thread hijack here, to let you know what we didn't tell you when you were all up at Gunstock. Some of the control stands and controls were placed the previous weekend, and we went out on Friday to put the SI boxes on them. Unfortunately, three of the plastic stands were broken off, with one of them broken in three pieces.


The broken stands were just snapped off, with no other marks on them. This is pretty tough stuff, I don't know whether I could break one by hand or not.


Then, when picking up controls, one of the pin punches was completely chewed up.



We didn't talk about this at the time, because we were concerned that some people might be afraid to go out in the woods if they knew about the voracious monster that had to be out there.

There can be only one conclusion: SHARK.

and..I heard rumors that someone may have ran into the creature on the course.

Possibly squirrels on the chewed up punches. They'll chew on anything that is relatively hard to grind down their teeth. I've had to repair lead flashing on chimneys that they chewed on, and the damage looked sort of like what you see in the photos.

From an organizer's log:

Dragging a cartload of water up to one of the water stops. This was followed by putting out the other water stops ... using a Gator.

This is just what happens when you get a gator to put controls out.

Porcupine was the popular guess on the punch, but the tooth marks are small, so maybe squirrel instead, but they're ubiquitous and I've never seen this before. Rodents do have a well-known taste for polymers, so either is a good candidate.

Despite a VERY LONG drive home and fracture ribs, the event was amazing! Thank you!
Now time to rest for 3-4 weeks - no running, but breathing DEEP allowed!
