That difficult time in life saying goodbye. Seems even more poignant half a world away. I didn't see my mother's grave in MI for 30 years, '72 to '02. My father eventually said to me "are you my son?" And then we are left holding the torch.

Bob, thanks - I can only concur with those thoughts. I had to remind myself on every visit since about 2015 to “say good bye” and then found myself drafting a eulogy on the flight home, so as not to lose the good memories.
With my grandparents buried in Albisreiden, Zurich, I wasn’t able to visit between 1980 and 2012 and by that time the State had turned their graves over......
Still the childhood memories remain as a torch for the next generation!
