You always escalate things. Why not just let him by and leave it at that?

I did not escalate things. He stopped in front of me and started berating me. I said "I'm sorry, next time call 'on your left' and it wouldn't happen." He then proceeded to bike slowly in front of us and then stop short, and then biked behind us. I tried to deescalate, and he wouldn't let it go.

He made a mistake (passing without warning, which I submit is a no-no on a busy bike path for cyclists, at least), I apologized, and he wouldn't let it go. If he'd just kept biking it would have been fine. But he stopped in front of us, he wouldn't accept an apology, he didn't realize that he'd been at all culpable, and he escalated.
