Discussion: Garmin Connect Automatic Sync

Many of you have been testing this out already, but for those who haven’t seen it, there is now a fully-automatic data sync option for Garmin.

You can set it up here.

Once authorized, Garmin Connect will push your new data to Attackpoint immediately after you sync to GC via ANT stick, USB, WiFi, or Bluetooth, depending on your device capabilities.

Some details:
The first time you authorize the GC connection, Garmin will also push your previous 30 days of activity, though AP will avoid duplicating any sessions you have already uploaded. But it is worth reviewing that period in your log to check for any activities you didn’t mean to post, or activities you have already logged without data. (The key for duplicate detection is the exact time of activity start, which we don't have for manual entries)

Attackpoint doesn’t use the Garmin activity type in your log (some watches only record “Running”!), but instead will learn how you classify your activities based on the data. If you are just starting to log data with AP you should give it a few days to figure that out. If you just got your previous 30 days blasted into your log, then you can correct the activity types on those sessions (may need to create new types) and you should then be good to go.

Let me know about any problems. It has been working pretty smoothly so far.

I've been testing it out. It works great and has been very convenient for uploading activities. It'll be helpful to get many of my juniors to upload consistently ;)

Thank you!

Much appreciated ken. Great feature to have added on.
I've been curious for a while as to what data exactly attackpoint uses to classify your activity, would you be able to share anymore info on that? Is it simply based on time, distance, pace & climb? Or is it based on your positional / route gps data, or a combo of it all? Cheers

It's excellent. I ended up having to reinstall Garmin Connect because my initial upload coincided with a Garmin Connect update that didn't like one of my files, so no 30-day history to upload. But I really appreciate the feature.

Greg, so true! Just have to get Anna to actually charge her phone so it can synch...

ColmM, a bit more on classification here. In short, a combo of stuff is used, but not the location.

Will the old way remain? I do like the flexibility of not showing some routes for some events. And we'll still have to manually add comments, so there will be multiple change log updates for followers... kinda feels like spamming them.

Yes, the other ways will still be available.

Been using it since it appeared as an option. There was some sort of initial glitch authorizing with GC, but a full reboot of the phone solved it. Thanks, this is handy.

Ken, can the upload have an option to keep the GPS track private until/unless edited for those folks doing course vetting or setting?

Cool! Thank you, Ken.

I may have answered my own question.

In Settings, edit your default GPS setting to private before heading out for course setting or vetting.

Janet: yes, that is the best way at the moment.

Starting earlier this year, I have been unable to download my gpx track from AP or Garmin. The map appears and the links to kml and gpx are there but when I click the gpx link, a Garmin window pops up and says Garmin Connect is already installed. Has anyone run into this issue?

No.

Can anyone help out here: The sync from GC works just fine with all activities I‘ve just recorded with Garmin gear.
But if I let Garmin get the activies from my smart trainer software (Rouvy), it will show up on GC, but will not be synced to AP.
So I have to add this activities manually from GC in AP, which is a bit of annoying.
Thanks.

The same is true with data from Zwift. It worked has worked in the past.

Yeah, Garmin changed their policy on this a year or two ago. They don’t provide access to any non-Garmin data. If you can pair a Garmin watch with your trainer then that may be a workaround.

Same is true of TrainerRoad.
