I certainly wouldn't read that as being the practically uncrossble mudpit that it apparently was in some places.

As for your route through the St Patricks letters, did you go through the centers (mapped as white woods) and if so did you notice the posts with letters on them? (Or were you running too fast?)

Yeah, that mud was HORRIBLE! I washed all my stuff that night, and the black mud from my pants & shoes stained my white WMOC jersey a dingy grey. :-\ What I really needed was to hose off before I even went inside -- but it was cold and I couldn't find a hose at our Airbnb place...

For the letters -- yes, I did go through the center (it was an open corridor), and I did notice the lettered posts -- which was a good thing, since I totally lost track of which letter I was in about midway through! ;-) In retrospect, I think it would have been better to run along the yellow along the southern edge of the letters, and then cut-in for my control.

When we had one of the first events at St Patricks, I had a leg (on my course) that approached the letters from the SE, and it was really amazing because you could use the map to make out each letter and gap.

I really hoped we could have had a similar leg at Nationals, but for a lot of reasons, it didn't work out.

I didn't know there are posts giving away the letters! Oh well. It's still pretty fun orienteering in there.

We need to see if we can use the Studebaker Trees, but I'm not sure if they're in the park or on the private Navistar Proving Grounds.

From the county's GIS property map, it looks like the Studebaker Trees are within the Bendix County Park. Here's the viewer:

Some of the park trails are on Google street view and the terrain looks pleasant.
