FYI, another part of the story --

I sent an e-mail to Chris Cassone (also working at the start) on Sunday evening:

"At 12:59 today a couple showed up at the start, I remembered them from earlier, the guy is quite tall, was wearing a yellow shirt, and you talked to them a bit, and then told me after they left that you were working on getting them interested in O’.

They said they’d done the White (maybe yesterday) and the Yellow (earlier that morning), and wanted to go out again. They knew the start closed at one, and figured if they went back to properly sign up for another course, they wouldn’t make it in time. So what they hoped to get was an Orange map and then just go out and do the course, no need to get a time or punch controls. He said he lived right next to the park, was in it often, hoped it was OK to just head out, we would have no responsibility for them.

So I thought about what you said and figured that I ought to say, "Fine,” and so that’s what I did. They were delighted and headed off.

I’m assuming they managed OK and made it home, though of course no way of knowing. Hope I did the right thing?"

And a reply from Chris a few minutes later:

"Thanks. I emailed him. He is an ultra guy and an adventure guy. Just did the Bear Mtn North Face 50 miler. I sure hope he gets the bug. He could be a force to be reckoned with."

Thanks for that, Peter. I am glad that Chris followed up with him. I hope we'll see these guys again!

Yes! That is one thing I love about orienteering - the fantastic community.

And white/yellow and then orange in the one day is exactly what needs facilitating (in the absence of actual coaching in the terrain).
