On behalf of all Canadians who don't live near Toronto, I say, I'm so sorry, and I hope you can escape as soon as possible. I recommend Alberta.

Hey Hamilton has a 'mountain' but yeah what Will says is true. Then again the lakes in Ontario are "great" and far superior (including one called just that) to those in Alberta. ;-)

if one must work in Toronto then living in Hamilton and commuting on the GO train is the more affordable, more orienteering opps, more hipster, more rugged, more outdoorsy way to do it.

That may be "more" than a fine young Ian can handle. Toronto is probably easier for him to manage than the hammer to the south.

TOC needs a few more key individuals and lots of great things can happen. Ian could make TOC Great Again. e.g., It makes sense for ARK to expand into Tdot but so far that hasn't happened.

Thanks for all the input everyone. @salal - I assume your question was meant in jest :), but someone did quite reasonably ask this of me. OUSA board members seldom live in the same cities, necessitating remote work and interaction. I don't think living in Canada will inhibit my ability to work on behalf of OUSA, especially since this flavor of Canada is but a short hop from Buffalo and Rochester. I still expect to attend a number of US national events (which isn't a prerequisite for OUSA board members in any case).

Alternatively, I'm obviously a Canadian sleeper agent. Consider that I've been to the past three Canadian champs but only two of the past three US Championships .

Ian, once Jordan redeploys, he'll be at Ft. Drum. Not completely sure on how far apart that will put you, but might be some good training opportunities for you both?

I assume OUSA holds most of its board meetings by teleconference (as Orienteering Australia does)? If so, being in Toronto should be no barrier - a couple of years ago I chaired an OA board meeting (admittedly at a fairly outlandish hour of the morning, local time) from Amber Tomas's apartment in Charlottesville.

Ft. Drum is about 2+ hours from Ottawa, just south of Kingston. Very close to Canadian Nationals in 2017.

Ft Drum is 1 hour from Tug Hill maps created by CNYO for 2008 NAOC. I think Erin may have held a training camp there once but I think they've otherwise been idle.

We've done a couple Sno-gaines in the Tug Hill area as well. Lots of snow most winter though missed badly on one of those.

Tug Hill was the site of the now famous US Ski-O Champs when it snowed 85cm on the weekend. Track setting fell behind so the long distance race became a mass start. The starter said go and there was a delay before Mark Tarnopolsky jumped out in front "track setting" in 50+ cm of powder. The others followed along. Mark still won.

A great photo of the mass start was on front cover of ONA many many years ago.

Yes, that's the same Tug Hill, though that event was at Winona State Forest, a different map from the ones used for 2008 NAOC.

Snowgaines I don't know but my guess is they would have likely been at Winona as well. There are trails there, unplowed roads used by snowmobilers, and parking.
