Discussion: Last minute race schedule changes

in: 2016 Icefields Parkway Orienteering Festival (Jul 23 – Aug 1, 2016 - Alberta)

AZ:
This year the Canmore area has an unprecedented Buffaloberry crop. This is in turn attracting an uncharacteristically high number of bears - both black and grizzly - into the area. In order to allow the bears to feast undisturbed, Alberta Parks has closed a number of areas including those that would have been used for the Canadian Championships Long, Sprint and Sprint Relay.

We have re-located the Long distance race to use the same (very nice) area as the Middle. (As Andree says: "disappointing BUT the Rafter Six map is awesome - competitors will get to love it twice as much as previously planned!!!!")

We are currently trying to get permission to hold the Sprint either in Calgary or Banff.

Full details as they develop on the website.

Kinda sucks. But, really, that's the first time in thirty years of organising events for me personally - so that's not too bad an average.

the bear spray rental can only be picked up at Canmore Nordic center day lodge ? can be picked up by a friend ? with no training map opportunities for friday - one would prefer NOT to make the trip Calgary to Canmore just for picking up the spray..

Probably that is possible. Pick up is at Trail Sports (at the Nordic Centre) where they will have to sign some form. But shouldn't be a big deal.

AZ do you ever get a feeling that there is a jinx following you around with the COCs? From storm damage to a forest in Saskatchewan, to a fire aroun a control at Whistler, high summer snow levels at the top of Whistler, to a bear invasion at Canmore.
If you are thinking of offering to help at the COCs in Ottawa next year, could you think again? (Joke)

That's kind of depressing to put that all together like that ;-)

But I didn't see any AZ presence when the assembly area at last year's Ottawa O-Fest sheltered a mass murderer.

I called Trail Sports yesterday and they said it was no problem for someone else to pick up the bear spray rental.

Heads up that a couple employees said that someone else couldn't pick up the bear spray until their boss overhread and said it was ok. Also, they needed to know my address and phone number for the waiver.

I think the frog invasion in Whistler is missing from the list ;-)

Great news! The University of Calgary has given a big thumbs up to us running the Sprint & Sprint Relay there! Check the website for latest details.

So much drama - and we haven't had a single race yet! I, for one, am hoping for a boring tomorrow.

Will we need the bear spray at Rafters? Can it be picked up on Saturday morning at the Nordic Centre. What time will they be open? Can see people showing up at the race site on Saturday with no spray and no time to get it before their start.

a BIG thank you to Adrian Zissos and his FWOC crew in putting together a brand new long race today with only 2-3 days of planning time. Very impressive and greatly appreciated.
