Discussion: Bees, mispunch, and slow-going... or my First A-meet! Sprint Finals.

Wow - that ruled! Sprint Finals in CT were awesome, thank you to WCOC for putting on the great event!

Funny how it works out, but the multiple bee stings at a control, the chaos I found myself in after running way too fast w/o paying enough attention to the 1:4000 scale map, and the rain during the 2nd sprint actually made me have more fun. Call me weird or just call me an orienteer.

On the flip side, I had as much humbling as I did fun during my first A-meet here at the Sprints. Seeing myself clear down at the bottom of the pack - yikes! Clearly I am doing something wrong. Yet, I shaved off 12 minutes from the first Sprint (and first ever A-meet experience) w/o any mispunch during the 2nd, so that's good direction. Still, about 30 min for a Sprint is certainly not acceptable, and I know it has absolutely nothing to do with my running ability and more to do with blowing by features and even controls way too fast and then BAM... where am I?

BAOC - I just joined you guys last week. Someone help!!! =)

Despite poor competitive performance, objective #1 (fun) was attained with huge success and learning was had. Great to meet some of you AttackPointers too. I look forward to many more races in this great sport!

Everybody messes up their first A-meet. Don't panic.

The first thing you should do is to sign up for the BAOC mailing list. Search for it on Yahoo Groups, and email me if you are having problems. There's also another mailing list that is more focused on training, called 'baoct'.

Other than that, I'm sure Attackpoint has plenty of discussions on how to improve if you use the 'Search' button.

Are you planning to come to Boggs Mountain?

Mikkel- thanks bro! I'll look for the yahoo group and sign up. I already am signed up for the training baoct one.

Unfortunately I have a family wedding to go to in CT the weekend of Boggs Mountain... I tried to have the wedding moved but the family gave me weird looks when I proposed re-scheduling it... as if there's more to life than orienteering, sheesh! =) But I will be heading up to the Western Canada event in Kamloops, and possibly fit in the event with the Scout-O next weekend.

If you are back here in CT and free on 10/14, we have a local meet at Tarrywile Park in Danbury. More great CT terrain and quite different from either day last weekend. Join us if you can.

Walk- yep, I actually am planning on it as I have a family wedding in CT to go to that Saturday, so I'll be in town again. See you then!
