Our town could cover its snowplow budget if it placed a TrashCam (sic) at my mailbox and resolved to prosecute the offenders.

Ratlum doesn't have enough poor people! In the City, those 'twinkling' Bud Light aluminum cans are scooped up immediately, and hauled in commandeered shopping carts to the recycling yard for bounty!

The poor people would have an awfully long hike if they wanted to try that in the far-flung reaches of Canton.

So Shannon is something on the order of 25 years of age by this point?

J-J is right. Poor people aren't so dumb that they would walk up to Ratlum looking for cans 7 miles from the nearest place they could get a nickel for them. While 3 or 5 or even 10 of them are an eyesore, they are hardly enough to make it worth the while to wheel a shopping cart up here to collect them.

Maybe so. But when I pick up aluminum cans around the property, and place them in my recycling drums, I feel 'doubly' rewarded: First for picking up litter, and Second for reducing the land-fill eyesores outside of town by 12oz each!

And thus the job is left to people like Charlie, for whom the benefits are psychological.

I once biked up to a car that had just thrown an empty can out their window, and asked the woman not to litter my neighborhood. And I was informed, as the car jetted away from the light, that "They pick them up!"

Throwing the not-quite-empty can or un-extinguished cigarette butt back in the window is the appropriate response, but SUV > bike.

I engage in that activity also. I can proudly say that there is no trash in the woods across from my house, because I pick it up!
Many places there is so much that I gather it up then drop it into one big(ger) pile, hoping someone will notice and take it all.

I once had a buddy drop a discarded can back into a convertible as some hood was driving through our neighborhood with his girlfriend. The hood slammed on the brakes, jumped up without bothering to open his car door, stomped across his own car hood dropping down in front of my friend...and delivered a roundhouse right that just about broke my buddy's jaw.

In the contest between the environment and common culture, commoners will always win.
