Discussion: West Point 2016 - status?

in: West Point National Meet (Apr 23–24, 2016 - West Point, NY, US)

Feb 18, 2016 5:15 PM #
Does anyone have the inside track on this meet and know if it is indeed going ahead?
It's still listed as "tentative" on the USOF website and there is no information posted on the USMAOC website (nor response to an email to the contact person).
Feb 18, 2016 5:22 PM #
An application is on file and the event is currently in sanctioning. They're planning a long event on April 23, and a middle and sprint on April 24.

West Point will host JWOC Team Trials
Feb 19, 2016 11:54 PM #
I am the meet director for this meet and can confirm that we will in fact be holding the meet including JWOC team trials. Sanctioning is ongoing and registration will open on OUSA event register no later than 22 Feb.
Feb 22, 2016 10:15 PM #
Can we have an ETA on any details (even preliminary details) about the races? 9 weeks out is cutting it a little short.

For anyone wondering, event registration has in fact opened today.
Feb 25, 2016 1:34 AM #
The Sanctioning Committee sanctioned this event 2/23/16.
Mar 2, 2016 4:45 AM #
I apologize for the delay. The website has been launched.
Mar 2, 2016 2:10 PM #
danieloconor, will there be lodging information coming out soon? Will there be cabins or barracks in the Camp Natural Bridge area that could be made available to lodge non-Army juniors and their coaches or chaperons? Who is the right person to contact in order to find out more about lodging at the West Point Event? I assume information on the walking distance from the parking to the starts will soon come out, too, as that is a factor in the consideration of how close one wants to be in terms of lodging.

The t-shirt pictured has a date of May 5, but the event is April 23-24. Is that just a mock-up?

Please advise climb as well as distance on the walk to start info because that affects some of us who are older and/or less fit than you cadets.
Mar 3, 2016 1:47 AM #
Orienteers have not been able to stay in barracks for several years. Not sure if camping is still allowed.
Mar 9, 2016 6:10 AM #
Thank you for the feedback. The t-shirt date has been updated. The walks to start are 820m, 20m climb for the long and 1.2km, 35m climb for the middle. These will distances will be reflected on the website with the next update.

With respect to lodging, we intend to make available affordable lodging in the barracks at Camp Buckner. However, we are not allowed to advertise this until we have received approval. The approval paperwork is slowly making its way through the appropriate channels and we can only take action if we are given the go ahead. We will make an announcement both on the website and on this thread as soon as we know more.

Great news. Fingers crossed that the toad in that road has moved on or retired!
Mar 10, 2016 2:13 AM #
Is there an entry deadline? Not obvious from the web page.
Mar 11, 2016 4:05 PM #
Deadline is 08 April (there is no late registration period so there are no late registration fees).

I'm looking at flying into EWR (Newark) Saturday morning. Is there a location map and directions to Camp Shea available yet? Anybody have any estimate of Saturday morning drive time from EWR? Also, does anybody have experience with car rental at EWR (who is fast and efficient, etc)?
Mar 15, 2016 4:48 AM #
Camp Shea is down a short dirt road that branches off of Mine Road in Highland Falls, NY (it's not the road that Google Maps calls Camp Shea Road, but it's close to it). Here's a map.
Mar 15, 2016 2:12 PM #
Thanks JJ. I was wondering if those little roads that Google maps showed from Highland Falls actually went through or were restricted.

If the flight arrives on time, and we can get from gate through picking up rental car in under an hour, we should be pretty safe to arrive by 11.
Mar 15, 2016 8:58 PM #
Some of the roads are closed from time to time. Mine Road is a road that is temporarily closed from time to time. At the time of the year of the event it should be open but the meet director can confirm that.
Mar 15, 2016 9:09 PM #
It would be really helpful if Mine Road were open on the day of the meet. :-)
Mar 16, 2016 2:08 AM #
Mike, in our experience: if you check luggage, it usually takes about 1 hour from landing to getting on the road (from the car rental facility) at Newark.
Mar 16, 2016 3:23 AM #
Thanks, maprunner. I'm hoping to avoid checking luggage. That should help, although I have had some horribly long waits at rental car counters.

It looks like a long way around if Mine Rd is not open...

Can anyone recommend a good camping spot with a location that's convenient to this event? Beaver Pond??

If the above comes to pass (as has been the case for most years since inception), then camping should also be available at Buckner.

Round Pond has also been available on & off over the years, last year too.

Just saw this on the USMA event page and main AP event page. Thought I'd throw it on here so it's more visible.

***Due to an unforeseen land use conflict, the dates for the Middle, Sprint, and Long have been switched. The Middle and Sprint courses will now be held on Saturday. The Long course will follow on Sunday. If this causes conflicts for you, please contact the registrar, John McCormick at ***

So Saturday will be at Camp Natural Bridge, Sunday at Camp Shea.

Assuming still no answer on Camp Buckner availability?
As retired military, I'll probably book a campsite up at Round Pond - would be nice if that could be opened up as an option for all orienteers as well if Buckner falls through.

Hmmmm, Cadet O'Conor said in his post above that the registration deadline is April 8, which is today, but when I went to OUSA Event Register website just now, it says registration closed.
Apr 8, 2016 11:44 PM #
Indeed, website also says it closes today and it was already closed when I tried to register...
Apr 8, 2016 11:53 PM #
Same here. Just tried to register an additional person. The event web site doesn't have all necessary info. Same as one of the previous years. No info about the registration deadline, driving directions, a location map, an open courses on-site registration, etc. No course and map notes. The award ceremony location is wrong as well. I already sent an email to the parking and transportation person, but nothing. I will escalate this to the event director and the officer in charge in couple of days.
Apr 9, 2016 12:28 AM #
The registration is open again. John McCormick just sent me an email about that.

Hi Mike,

wrt Rental car counter lines:

I've been a long-time member of National's Emerald Club, through work. Even though I don't work at the company any more, I'm still member. It's free, but maybe if you are not working, and try to join there's a fee? In any event, you just go right to the lot, pick a car and drive away. Hertz and Avis also have similar programs, not sure abut the Budgets, etc.. Even if it cost more, it's probably worth the time savings.

I booked a room Saturday night at the "Americas Best Value Inn Central Valley" and have an extra bed if anybody wants to share lodging cost. patdunlavey at

Start times are posted.
Apr 20, 2016 4:47 PM #
I'm trying to figure out the latest I can get to Camp Natural Bridge to get my registration material (bib) and still make it to the start on time. I am guessing that it's about 2.5km to the start with a steep 30 m climb at the end based on various information in the meet notes. Can someone verify this, please?

I know I could drive to a closer parking lot but I would prefer not to unless I'm late.

Apr 20, 2016 6:02 PM #
i think that is correct, Sandy. They advertise it as 20 minutes but that doesn't seem like enough time to me!
Apr 22, 2016 1:17 AM #
1.2 km walk from closest parking lot with estimated 20 min walk to start. If you park at Camp Natural Bridge, the total walk would be approx 1.8 km in which case you should allow at least 30 min.
