Plowed, but certainly not bare pavement. Frozen slush ruts, some slick icy patches, lots of frozen chunky snow/ice underfoot. Just generally unpleasant & difficult running. And the further up the mountain I got, the worse it was becoming, and I hadn't even gotten to the dirt sections yet..

Wow, who would have thought a six-letter word would encompass such a specific situation! :-)

It can encompass plenty of other situations too. A Swiss army word...
