Discussion: Route to Christmas

Most orienteers are familiar with this; many adventure racers are not. The Route to Christmas started today - a holiday tradition that provides some seasonal navigation fun!

Each day until Dec. 25, an interesting course leg will be posted. First you can choose your own route. If you want, you can draw it using the tool supplied and add comments to share with others working on the challenge.

Then you can read on to learn which route worked best and why, and check the map to see other proposed routes. I always learn something!

That's cool Bash! Thanks.

Worth linking each others maps in here to discuss?

Did day 1 today. Really enjoyed studying the map. I decided to run along the road for a bit, taking the contour to the corner of the treeline and bolt for the saddle from there.

My only Orienteering race was a 24hr Rogaine with Sean this summer. Learned stacks. Must have a look at day 2 later, after work and after college, after dinner, after everything ... :-(

Looking forward to doing some of these for real in the spring

Okay Day 2 looks like a cool route. Good deal trickier. Had to have a go here in work or I'd miss it. I had similar thinking to you Sean but opted to take a wider berth to avoid the drop and climb. Could be pretty wet down there ;-)

I was visualising that route Mike and kept saying "Hole!!" over and over and over to myself :D

It interesting to look back at the routes.

I'm assuming 'normal' AR rules of avoiding main roads apply.

Not unless they're off the map or marked out of bounds (road marked with purple Xs).

Sean! Went looking for your route after submitting mine. You need to see....

Mr Wonderful:
Ah, main roads. pre race meeting, "You are forbidden from using Highway 82". Look at USGS, see no such designation on any road. Good times.

I almost got #3 right, hooray!

Mike that overlay of our maps either shows us both to be fantastic like minded navs or a pair of complete eejits! :)

Either way at least we won't fall out over route choice ;)

Maybe we should get Eoin to do it to validate!

Today's route choice (Day 18) is an interesting one.
