Memories- I spent almost a week in the harbor back in about '67? or so, year of an Americas Cup. Was second week of Sept on a workmates boat. I met him in Edgarton where he was moored but because the harbor taxi service shut down after Labor Day, they let us tie up next to the yacht club dock for a couple days as the wind from way off shore hurricane blew. The wind let up and we dashed for Cuttyhunk. Wind came back up and there we were. Got off every day to wander the rocky shore. Not much happening at that time of year then either. End of the week and we had to get out. Even considered flying - back to work of all things. Can't imagine. Wind totally died the last possible day but we were socked in thick soup all the way to Watch Hill. Could hear the spectator boats of the Cup but only saw a few as we went right through the middle of their fleet. End of my NE sailing time.
Sailing America's Cup races in thick fog - wonder how often that might have happened. Tactics out the door- probably cancelled most such races.
Cuttyhunk is a special little place and must have been considerably more so 40-50 years ago. The harbor now has more than 40 rental moorings inside ($45/night) and 15-20 outside. I've always admired the Elizabeth Islands which are unspoiled/undeveloped due to their being private. C'hunk is the only public one and of a different stripe.
I got away with tying up to the Edgartown YC dock in October, sometime before 1984. Beth came by Woods Hole ferry and dutifully sat in a bench on the other side for 60' waiting for Chris & me to show up. We were below socializing on the harbor side of the clubhouse. She failed to note the mast above the EYC roof line.
I talked to someone that was on a spectator ferry after that non-race day. It was just a shallow fog bank and they could see all these masts bobbing around them while we could barely see the bow.
