There was a single downed tree on my map indicated with 5 symbols: brown x for rootstock, orange for open land at the rootstock, brown line for trunk, green slash for branches, dark green for canopy.

Later, I overheard someone defend thIs mapping style by arguing that part of the essence of orienteering is being able to identify the 5 or 6 useful pieces of information from the dozen unuseful pieces. Maybe, but I'm looking forward to running on a USGS topo in Ohio in 2 weeks with no clutter whatsoever.

Hate to say this but - What happened to ISOM? The map team seems to have made up their own rules for field checking, drafting and printing. Would have been a great area otherwise.

@walk - maybe Sanctioning needs to review the maps. On a related note, apparently the OUSA course consultant "tacitly agreed" that it was OK to print the Brown course at 1:7500. You'd think that the course consultant would be familiar with the Rules. Lots of educating to do.

There was a "course consultant"? Whoever is in charge of them should reconsider?

I agree.

Yes, there were definitely issues. Luckily the terrain and weather was so nice, it was easy to still enjoy yourself out on the course. But there were some problems that need to considered for future use of the map, and for any meet with the same course setters.

I was appalled at the drafting. The symbol sizes were ridiculously small for 1:7500.

I don't mind the 1:7500 at all - my eyes are getting bad enough that I like it most of the time - but it needs to be a blown up version of a 1:10,000.

Our map looked like it was drafted at 1:7500. Crazy.

But the terrain was fabulous and I would go back any time they choose to have another event there.

I too enjoyed the terrain, and hope they fix the map problems before inviting us back!

Appreciated the fact that the controls on Sunday were printed in purple. The ones on Saturday were printed in red, and even though I'm not colorblind, the purple ones were MUCH easier to see! Janey P
