Had a great day out sweeping the half-marathon course at Summit 700. This was definitely more of a combination of running and hiking but I'm too lazy to try to estimate and break it down. I wanted to get some miles and climbing in this weekend but didn't want to race two weekends in a row, so when I saw that Bob still needed volunteers, this sounded like a a perfect solution!

I got to run with three different runners and really enjoyed getting to know them and hearing about their race experiences. The first woman I ran with told me at around 4km that she planned to drop at the 11km mark when we went back through the village. She was a very experienced racer with blood pressure issues and knew that she wasn't faring well in the heat. I encouraged her to wait to make the decision but it was clear that she knew herself best, so I didn't push it. I was sad to say good-bye to her and hoped I'd be able to catch the next runners, so I hauled ass a bit after I dropped her off and fortunately caught up with them on the namesake climb. I spent a bit of time with Becky, who had also raced at Limberlost the week before and was also really feeling the heat, and then finished the last 8-9km with John from Whitby who is training for the Barkley Fall Classic. I think at first all three of them found my enthusiasm annoying, but they all came round I think and it made me feel like it was a job well done when John said he didn't think he would have finished without me. It was a great day out, with a fun impromptu tailgating party in the parking lot with the Fenton / Carpenter / Miller clan before rushing home from my brother's birthday party.
