Today's route was the Langdale Pikes and was definitely one of the tougher routes I'd chosen, mainly because of the technical factor at the top of each peak, which involved a fair bit of using my hands to climb up!

I got out just after sunrise and as had been the pattern, had a very quiet ascent as the fog was lifting. At the top of the first ascent was a beautiful lake called Stickle Tarn. My next climb up Pavey Ark definitely tested my mettle and I almost turned around a couple of times. I kept going because I knew eventually there would be more people out if I ran into trouble. I met a lovely family who stopped for a snack on the top of Pavey Ark but who had ascended via a different route. Almost everyone carried thermoses with them full of hot tea or soup and this seemed a very civilized custom I could really get behind!

It was very foggy at the time so from Pavey Ark, I had to use my compass to find Thunacar Knot (as suggested in my instructions!) but confirmed with my app that I was in the right location. The climb up Pike of Stickle wasn't nearly as challenging as the previous one, but Harrison Stickle got my heart rate up a fair bit! The route down from there was quite precarious but once I got back to the tarn, I met up with a lovely girl and we chatted the rest of the way down.

The post-hike pub destination was the Hiker's Bar at the New Dungeon Ghyll hotel, which advertised muddy boots and wet paws were welcome (dogs were allowed in most of the pubs!), where I had a delicious vegetable pie!
