ahr:112 max:139

UNO's O-ringen set of 5 races near the Harris Center.
Warmup race for me. Mistakes at 1 (looking for control at building, which was really the start), 4 overshot, and 7 stopped early.

O - competition race (Well School) 27:19 [4] 2.58 km (10:37 / km) +42m 9:49 / km
ahr:120 max:157

Picked up the effort a little in a mob of people. Moving better.

O - competition race (Sargent Center) 43:42 [4] 3.43 km (12:45 / km) +50m 11:53 / km
ahr:132 max:151

Again, more effort. Pretty good except slipped by 6 and relocated off the trail behind it.
Could feel hamstring fading on this and did not want to stubble into injury, so skipped the last two races at the Harris Center. Great fun and good courses by Alar. Excellent venues. Thanks!

O - competition race (Shaver Lake CA) 23:49:00 [3] 58.0 km (24:38 / km) +2400m 20:25 / km
ahr:106 max:162

NA Champs rogaine with Charlie Leonard. Went well considering we didn’t run for nearly all the race. I was taking it easy on the hamstring so mostly hiking except for the last 2 hours.

Were 2nd supervet to a couple Aussies and 1st North Americans in the class, I think 4th overall.

Had gps watch in a sealed bag to capture the track, but it died after 19 hours and missed getting the track for a control we missed because all sorts of extra roads had been cut that weren’t updated on the map. Totally confusing situation. Figured the rest of the distance and added it in.

Leg was okay for 18 hours with the help of a hiking pole, but then started protesting a little.

More: did the south section first, covering the bare rock and cliffy segments which were fun, but a little slow in the tricky spots. Then into the northwest woods at night. Skipped the northeast because of elevation gain, distance and spread between controls.

Some areas thick knee/waist high vegetation. Very dense and a little scratchy. Sections I couldn’t push through and walked across the top of the bushes, feet never getting down to touch the ground.

Could not find 503 despite no doubt being within a few dozen meters and attacking from the hilltop to the north. Just too flat and thick. Other problem was 701 in that area with extra roads.

Towards the end we were counting down the clock and swept a bunch of controls we had left near the hash house: 508, 402, 502, 302, 201 and 307, all within the last 2 hours. Missed finding marshy 202 in the rush but probably could have with the 10 minutes we had to spare.

Weather was gorgeous, clear and 70’s in the day and dropping into the 30’s overnight. Had enough clothes for that and kept moving.

Down day getting settled for rogaine. Camped last night with coyotes singing close by. Below freezing overnight.

O - competition race (Big Basin Long) 50:46 [4] 3.0 km (16:55 / km)

Much better race today. Nav clean. Speed at an 80% lope. Ended 2nd in class. Out of first by a couple minutes due to running speed. Used a hiking pole which was good on the steep hillsides.

Road Running 7:22 [3] 0.47 mi (15:43 / mi) +8m 14:55 / mi
ahr:108 max:136

O - competition race (Big Basin Redwoods ) 1:08:38 [3] 3.85 km (17:50 / km)

US Nationals middle. Course okay, thick in places. Nav errors sank the run. 5th of 11 with a bad performance.

Too far left going down the spur on 1 and got slightly below before I stopped and cut back over and up. Then ok to 5 But just left going to 6, going into search mode and wasting 3 min. Fast down the grade to 7, going right on track past 2, but again stopped short and fruitlessly looked for the control. Bailed back to 2 and relocated, then repeated mistake. Finally stopped and really looked at the map and realized I was looking for the 2nd hilltop, not the first. So there it was, another 100 m farther.

Leg was okay moving at 80% speed.

O - competition 1 [3] +169m
ahr:112 max:153

Note

No running since corn maze, probably good for hamstring and shoulder. Been moving rocks, gravel and dirt around ski trails (with tractor).

Also wrestling with dovetail fixture and router making drawers for kitchen. Requires precision, patience and checking everything twice. Nice looking maple frame so far, with 3 good corners and a 4th okay as a learning experience.

Skipped 1-2-3, 11, 17,18,19. Pretty good, but skipping 12 instead of 1 would have been better.
