Orienteering race 1:01:19 [4] 10.05 km (6:06 / km) +90m 5:50 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Compass Sport Cup Heat, Fineshade
ran brown because a) I'm used to it, and b) we're light in this category, up against Pete Hodkinson, though not Oli Johnson, who didn't show

pretty much my best run since the 'return', only a hesitation at 10 when the control was hung on the wrong side of a pond, thought I'd set off too fast but the splits suggest otherwise, felt a bit heavy, tired after 40+ mins, but knew I'd kept ahead of Aidan Smith who should have started 4mins behind, didn't see him till the exit from 22 and he did not pass me!!! (in fact, he didn't gain anything on the last loop!)

10th, 13mins behind Poo Boy (which will probably mess up the ranking points)

ah, checking the splits I've found one mistake: I just didn't notice the track to 14, ran along the edge of the wood, cost me 20secs

too nice not to get out to Farley, there were a few things I wanted to check and apparently blank section that I needed to investigate - it wasn't entirely blank and the vegetation was not entirely bramble, darkness caught up with me though and had to run back to the car

Mapping 3:00:00 [0] 6.0 km (30:00 / km)

poking around a new bit of wood, finally, not too grotty, but not much there either, a depression/knoll, possibly, a veg boundary or two, possibly

better luck back at the place I surveyed first: I found all the point features - now I've got to put them in the right place ;)

sensational sunset toward which I ran like a girl (in walking boots)

6 PM

running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.6 km (6:15 / km) +20m 5:53 / km

easy run down to the park via my sister's house before intervals

running intervals 20:03 [5] 5.0 km (4:01 / km) +5m 3:59 / km

intervals: 5 x 1km, 90secs rest: 4.01 3.58 4.02 4.00 4.02

delighted with these, I remembered the plan to take it steady on the first when I was finishing the second, fortunately, the rest of the plan was to do three fast ones - I did that and then I did one more, probably could've done another ... always say that

not sure why this went so well: I'd spent three hours mapping in the afternoon, so maybe the body, if not the heart rate was sort of warmed up, I was also trying to focus on posture, leaning forward, feeling my toes

running warm up/down 6:00 [2] 0.82 km (7:19 / km) +30m 6:11 / km

easy run back to my sister's (uphill)

running (terrain) 45:53 [3] 7.11 km (6:27 / km) +120m 5:57 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Gardoms & Birchen Edges
for the sake of variety I went for terrain run with my base map of Gardoms & Birchen Edges, and it was mostly through terrain as the paths were wet, a lot of water up there, some of it very cold, I was aiming for 45mins at a good pace, very enjoyable, and not tired at all ... which means I should have pushed harder

Mapping 2:30:00 [0] 5.0 km (30:00 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

focussed on a small area dotted with rhodendrons, trying to get to grips with them - I don't like the way the grow along the forest floor, creating a kind of sprawling undergrowth the height of brambles but more robust, how do you represent that? (double undergrowth screen?) found another knoll/boulder

the mudclaws have finally gone despite (or because of) my father's attempts to shoe glue them, so that leaves one intact pair of running shoes, I need a hybrid pair for road/trail runs and another pair of o-shoes, jeez

5 PM

running 1:08:09 [3] 12.45 km (5:28 / km) +240m 5:00 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley Moor, Matlock Bank
felt nicely warmed up after mapping, but could've done with getting out half-an-hour earlier to beat the dark (lamp didn't last long)

tried to keep the pace up today and it worked - one of my faster ascents of Farley Hill, felt very comfortable too, got slowed by some icy patches on the road, a dog walker on a narrow path and couple of oncoming cars

(bit concerned about the Garmin's accuracy: when I ran this route back in Aug/Sept, it marked it as 12.65 - last time it had it as 12.25, only difference is I stopped at the top of the road, but that's less than 150m)

Note

Left quad tightened on the way back down from Farley, don't know if that had anything to do with the cold and/or the moment I almost turned my left ankle.

Didn't have a lift to tonight's long run anyway.

2 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 5.0 km (24:00 / km)

Farley Moor
Things look different in the snow. Happily I was able to spot the point features (boulders/knolls) I'd selected previously. Also noticed a few vegetation boundaries that I hadn't seen before.
