Running race 4:50:42 [4]

Going into this race I had one goal. Run a steady pace so that I didn't feel like I was going to die on the last lap, thus proving to myself that I could do this 100 km race in 2 weeks.

I went out nice and conservative on my first lap. When I came through I saw that I was 4 min slower than last year. Internally to myself I had a moment where I worried "did I go out too slow, what was I thinking..."

Kept going and after the second lap I had fallen off even more (albeit not as bad as I thought when you consider my lap times). Now I decided it was time to really focus and I tried to quicken my pace, which given I had just run 25 km meant in reality I just kept it steady. Near the end of lap three I came up on another runner. He decided to stick with me for a few km and we trotted along with simple conversation and kept each other steady. I really enjoyed this 3 km with him, but at the top of the wall he bid me fairwell and on I continued. Last year at this point in the race my legs just about gave out on me and I struggled to finish the last 12.5 km. This time around I still felt good and now I was focused on catching as many people up ahead as I could.

At about half way around I came across this woman walking up a hill, as I went by her she started to run again and told me she was going to try to hang on as my pace looked good. I was fine with this until she started yapping into my ear. It was like having a small yappy dog running right behind you. "She was good friends with Elle Greenwood.... Did I know that Elle won this race last year.... She'd normally be much farther up ahead but had hurt her ankle..... Besides this wasn't her type of terrain...." Let's just say that I was so glad for the next hill where she stopped to walk and I decided I'd push the pace at the same time to hopefully put a small gap on her in hopes that I wouldn't see her again.

As I came around the back I was still feeling strong and this was more important to me than my actual time. As I rounded the last corner I was surprised to see that my time was what it was. I'd knocked a 1:20 off last years time and paced my race perfectly. I'm now feeling very confident for oil creek in 2 weeks.
