CNYO Rogaine - Race 3 in the Trifecta Cup.
One of my goals for the year was to see if I could win the CNYO Trifecta cup. The cup is for the individual with the highest score across the Snowgaine, Regaine and Rogaine. In years past Audrey and I have done well at 2 of the 3 events, but I'd never been able to make it to the Regaine, this year I made a point of doing all three.
Overall our race went ok. As per usual I threw up around 3 hours in (still don't know what causes this). I was also feeling last weekend a bit more than Audrey so she helped me out by carrying some of my extra food for me. We kept a steady pace, but weren't pushing too hard on the trails knowing that we were still recoverying from a week before. As night came I suddenly felt water running down my back. We stopped and I realized that a section of my bladder that connets with the hose had started to tear away from the main bladder. Tried to duct tape it, but that didn't work so we had to empty it out and share one bladder for the rest of the night.
We continued on at a steady pace. I screwed up out of 81 when we missed the road and I tried to bushwack us out of there. Then on one of the last controls before we got back to the base I tried a different route up the hill which meant we started the bearing from the wrong spot. We probably lost an our on this one and eventually had to go out to a road so we were at a known good spot and attack again.
By the time we rolled back into the base the rain was coming down very strong. We put on more warm layers and I grabbed some bottles so I had something to drink, it was about 5 in the morning when we left. For the rest of the race we'd go in pouring rain with the wind getting worse as the day progressed. By about 8:30 in the morning I had to start adjusting our route to make it back in time to finish. We had to leave 79 at the southern edge of the map which was disappointing, this was probably a direct result of our troubles earlier. At about 10 am we were on our last few controls and the wind had really picked up. By now trees were starting to come down around us and we even saw a tree get ripped up roots and all only 50 m behind us. We scampered into the last control and out of the woods as quickly as possible.
Finished 2nd co-ed and 3rd overall. Congrats to Bash and Jay XC who took the win by 40 points. Glad to see Barb has found a teammate that can keep up with her over the 24 hour period.
With 2542 points I'd scored enough to take the overall win in the Trifecta Cup. Which means I get the Cup for a year and I get the "Bubba" insulated coffee mug. Man I love the CNYO prizes.
