Paddling race 1:50:00 [3]
Definitely our worst race of the weekend (although the bike ride the day before was close to this). We ended up last place in our group. Between my shoulder which was quite sore from the fall the day before and the larger lighter (seriously Eddie's kayak is made by Bic) that Eddie tried to pass off as a kayak we were dead slow. This was driven home to us when Nicole, who had spent the race paddling with Eddie, realized that we needed to get moving to the next event so she figure she should finish ahead of us so her boat could be put away. Not only did she pass both of us, but also the next 3 teams ahead of us all in the final few Kms.
Cycling race 2:30:00 [5]
I was really looking forward to this event as I've never gotten to do anything like this before. We started out well getting the first 3 without any trouble. Then on the way to four we were supposed to get onto a main trail and go from there. Well the trail we ended up on wasn't the correct one, although I was nice and wide. After realizing we weren't sure were we were (we should have turned around the first time I was confused, oh well, learned this for next time) we kept going a bit further because we just needed to figure out where we were. Well we ended up being at 12, not 4. This split cost us 30 minutes. The next few controls went off fine, overshot 9 a bit, but that only cost us a few minutes. When we got to 12 it wasn't there, we back tracked a bit, didn't see it, so we continued on the trail some more and found it further up the trail. I'm convinced it was misplaced. Made a wrong turn going to 13, but quickly realized this one and went back to the right spot, probably a few more minutes here. We probably could have made it out in under 2 hours without my major mistakes, but still it was fun to do this event.
Orienteering race 2:56:00 [5]
Final event of the weekend. By this time both Eddie and I were pretty tired and the final standings weren't going to change much (or so it seemed). All the top teams were ahead of us by enough that we probably wouldn't be able to catch them. So we started off figuring we'd see how we were feeling and set the pace from there. Started with a jog on our way to 1. As we were running Bill and Martin came up behind us and passed us. Bill made a crack that they'd probably see us again some time soon. Going to 1 was hard to find. I tried really hard to concentrate on where we were while ignoring the two teams up ahead of us (Bill's and Running Free). Very quickly I decided something was wrong and we turned around to go back to the open field. Sure enough on the run back Bill/Martin passed us again. Once we got to the open field we went to the corner where the trail was mapped and tried to re-find it. Not 2 sec after getting there I here the beep of the SI, look under the brush and I can see a team punching it, that was easy. We continued on running to 2. 2 was located at the top of a pretty high hill. You could take the trail all the way around one side, or in our case we just walked up the side of the hill. I figured if we're going to walk up hill anyway why run the extra distance. Once on the top, sure enough Bill/Martin passed us again as they'd run around. Down the hill and through a few intersections and onto 3, and again Bill/Martin came up behind us. This time they just ran behind us, as Martin pointed out that they'd learned their lesson after the first few times. We continue in a run as a group until we got to another intersection and Eddie and I walked a few paces to get our breath back. The rest of the course went off without any major hitches. We were always just behind Andrew C's team, except when we were able to sneak around them at 7, but they weren't really pulling away from us. After hitting 8 we realized that we could probably clear the course under the time limit, so we tried to keep a steady pace on the trails ran to 9 on the way out. We ended up coming in just under 3 hours, with one of the better times of the 2-day teams. Definitely our best event and it felt great to finish the weekend off with such a good showing.
