Red course at a local meet organized by Hudson Valley Orienteering (HVO) at Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill, NY. HVO had organized a local meet at this location in the fall of last year (2013). That meet in the fall was my first time orienteering after getting back from California.
This time I was in much better shape, both physically and mentally. The terrain at Blue Mountain is very technical and similar to the West Point terrain I had experienced back in April. Accordingly, here, as at West Point, it was very important to keep track of my precise location on the map at all times. In fact, I lost the most time when I did not keep track of my location and consequently had quite a bit of trouble re-locating. This happened when I was going to controls 4 and 8. The attackpoint.org split calculations suggest that the time I lost on these two controls was 12 minutes and 22 seconds. If I hadn't lost that time, I would have been 5th out of the 21 finishers, instead of 9th.
Otherwise, I felt good navigating and moving through the woods, and enjoyed the course quite a bit. Thank you, HVO!

Today Boris and Alli were visiting New York City. I met them at the Newark airport when they arrived from Stockholm and we spent a lovely afternoon travelling to Brooklyn, sharing food and catching up. It was truly wonderful to see them both.

At Hudson Highlands State Park in New York State. Took the Wilkinson Memorial trail, up to the intersection with Notch trail, then turned back and followed the Breakneck Ridge trail to the beginning of the really steep descent, where ran into the rest of my party - who were moving in the opposite direction.

Walked with mom, aunt Marina and a friend of the family from the top of the steep ascent up the Breakneck Ridge trail to the intersection with Breakneck Bypass, which we took to Wilkinson Memorial trail. Followed Wilkinson Memorial back down to the road. Beautiful day, weather still not too warm.
