Orienteering 45:00 [3] 2.5 km (18:00 / km)
spiked:7/7c

Setting a fistful of yellow and orange controls. Fun exercise to find where the control should be, as opposed to where it is. Broad re-entrants are tough.

I remember seeing someone's online-iphone-orienteering solution that graded you on how close you got to the control - i think it'd be more fun to drop a pin and be graded on exactly where you think it is. and i say this as someone that will, well, occasionally get near a control without knowing. bonus, if you're way off, you could get set straight. and penalized for the pleasure.

spiked:10/11c

Walking orange with the Mother, the Brother, and the honorary Sister, by law. Hacked up to compensate for bad watch management. Fun was had!

craptacular gong show. bah. and the damn model of inconsistency. second place through four controls, and then lost the plot. feh. somehow managed find time for two more decent splits in my busy, catastrophe-packed schedule.

found three tick nymphs after the shower. tiny little bastards, they are.

and my left IT band is jacked up. no pain throughout the range of motion when unloaded, unless i really twist my foot inwards. sharp pain for the last little bit of extension when under load. like holding up a motorcycle at a stoplight. that was friggin' delightful to discover. feels fine right now, but i'm high on vitamin I at the moment. gonna skip tomorrow's run.

Running 26:30 [3] 5.33 km (4:58 / km)

left the watch at work. somehow made do without the comforting hug of the hrm strap, or the delicate embrace of a multibillion dollar global satellite network.

csu parko 8 at the fells, long pond.

woof. someone remind me why start triangles are equilateral. lost at least a minute heading to twelve first. 12 /= 1. feh. didn't screw my head on until 6ish, 7ish. happy with the last half though. no map case + the ben sweats + ben foliage management techniques = confetti

also, time for a new hrm battery, perhaps

1) Braindead. My fault definitly, but a less, uh, darwinian route setter wouldn't have the start and finish controls on top of each other, with the first and last legs 120 degrees apart.
2) Stumbly, bad compassing.
3) More stumbles
4) Found that marsh at speed, and got boxed in by some vegetables
5) First good leg. Shouldn't've been surprised by the stone wall, though.
6) Progressively aimed further off. Should've been using the terrain, not the compass.
7) Best leg, hands down. Used two boulders to line up on the control and spiked it
8) Pretty good. A little hesitatey at the first boulders off the trail
9) Took the long way around instead of the frontal assault. Was trying to drop Dave Yee, so I went the stupid, straightforward why and gassed it
10) Pretty good
11) Fine
12) Also fine - a little surprised to see it so soon
13) Shoulda taken the western trail. Went a-bashing, maybe should've taken the trail?

Note

keeping myself entertained while I wait for the 3D printer to crap out more parts

800m record: 1:41, vdot's 87.8
Mile record: 3:43, vdot's 83.3
5k record: 12:37, vdot's 85
10k record: 26:18, vdot's 85
Marathon record: 2:03:38, vdot's 83

eeeeerily similar . more likely by design of the vdot system, in large part. any internally consistent system must be right? right? Guess I should read that book before i write this. Whoops!

sprinters, though, are mutants. 100m in 10s is a vdot of 111. Sure, it's probably the equation breaking down, but in my defense, sprinters are weird. Also, apologies to Mr. Bolt about those four tenths of a second I rounded up. I'm sure you care deeply about each one, but ken doesn't. Take it up with him.

ps, ben slow!

morning lap around fresh pond. not paying much attention to pace, because i was fiddling with my accelerometer. the blinky light wasn't blinking when i got home, though. left patellar tendon still letting me know it's there. not hurt by any means, just kind of a 'yo, i'm a tendon, what up'. right big toe's fine for running, and the right achilles was actually a cut, not muscle damage. i should look at things when they hurt.

Note

Been looking into the ~12-minute drubbing I got from PG this weekend. Out of the 19 legs, maybe a third look like

where we take pretty much the same route, and maybe a few seconds go either way. There's even a pair where I pick up ~40s. And then there are four where I pick a decent route but shoot past the control and lose 30-60s. Oh, and the other four or so where I hesitate to think and lose 30-60s. And then there's pair of pearls where I both hesitate and blow it at the end, kind of like:

Climbing (Gym) 1:45:00 [3]

some decent-to-okay bouldering. not peak form, but cleaned a bunch of V2's amd got a V3. There were a bunch of demoralizing V3's set by some sadistic mutant that made me sad. killed it on the slackline (and ordered one offa the innerweb) and did some solid toproping - 5.10, 5.10a, 5.10b, 5.11b, 5.9+. the 11b was definitely over-graded, it wasn't much harder than the 9+. highlight was when i needed another inch out of my arm to do a hand-foot match, so i just did the move on thumb- and forefinger-tip. coolest move in recent memory. hurt enough to not want to do it again.
