Running 20:00 [3] 1.25 mi (16:00 / mi)

another attempt to take cooper running. emphasis on attempt

Note

The third of 3 motala courses.
First leg for Ian, Bill, and Alex, second for Brendan, and third for me.

Definitely my worst leg, in large part because Ed wasn't driving anymore. Dropped in too early for 3, and then not only made a bad route choice to 6, but executed poorly on that bad route choice. turns out the effects didn't cancel. this time.

red at breakheart. by ben standards, pretty clean. no epic mistakes come to mind, only one major mistake one (10), and two minor ones (4,9), i think
woo

1) clean. felt good to start clean
2) took a few steps to the west, then reevaluated quickly. a little overly direct on the approach, but okay (5s)
3) decent. (30s) bobble in the middle, but it was from thinking and saving myself from a bigger mistake
4) should've taken the eastern route along the road. more importantly, i shouldn't've overrun my target. (2:00)
5) idiotic exit from 4 (30s), and going high over the cliffs was stupid (45s)
6) good clean fun
7) cleanish, but came out futher down the road than i intended to (15s) bitchin' 20ft log run for style points, though.
8) easy contol, bit of a gimme
9) confusing trail network out of 8, but i think i did a decent job of it. overall poor decision to stay down near the lake, pretty steep exit to the road. (30s?) should've gone right at the control, coming from the hilltop just to the north was a great way to find some impressively healthy greenbriar (15s)
10) the big screwup of the day. totally at the wrong turn in the road, then totally went the wrong way on a brand-new trail (in progress, work team and all. arguably there was no 'right' way) (2:00) started on the direct route, found a huuuge bog, and backed out along the trail. had a bit of a ponder (30s) where the other end of the new trail met with what i was looking for. made an unnecessary lap of the cliff (15s)
11) happy with this one. steamrolled some plants, but they should've moved.
12) cut in early to the wrong boulder, but otherwise good (15s)
13) clean
14) had a brief case of the stupids coming out of 13. a little overconfident at recognizing trails (20s)
15) good, could've taken a more direct exit out of 14, thought
F) and the trundle home!

8:10 total mistakes. original guess was 5 minutes, but it's damn well better than usual, and on a harder, longer course.

Note

Motala Course 2!
First leg for Brendan and I, second for Ian, and third for Bill and Alex. Handicap accordingly.

Don't know what's up with control 2, and control 3 was a goddamn festival of poison ivy. Access from the north was clean, but the rest was kind of laid out in a pleasant amphitheater-like grove. I came from the east. Odd that the track looks like I hit the center of the circle - I actually just laid eyes on it and didn't feel like wading in urushoil. Don't tell anybody.

leisurely little paddle with alicia in hopkinton state park. we'll have to bring the fluffmonger with us next time. got attacked by a goose on that island in the middle. while on a steep sand slope. only injuries were to dignity

Note

The motala at Fresh Pond was a total hoot, and I wanted to see what it looked like. So, feast your eyes!

None of the five of us actually had course one first - it was the third course for Ian and Brendan, and the second for Bill, Alex and myself. Was having a bear of a time georeferencing the map, but then i realized the three scans of the three courses didn't quite line up, and I'm too lazy to tailor each individually, so we can deal. Also, the courses don't start at the map exchange, because we actually did it across the trail. and #8 might've been ever-so-slightly misplaced, but no biggie.

I'll get the other two up when I get a chance - and probably slow them down a touch. Course 3 looks like the interesting one. Aside from me blowing a minute on it. bah.

fresh pond park-o motala! had map order 2-1-3

Had a good, solid run for once. Helped that Ari and Ed had the same map order, though. Highlights include a huuuuge patch of poison ivy at the third control on course 2, an epic mud skating recovery, and some 'ooohs' from innocent bystanders when leaping a fence at full tilt. lowlights include dropping in too early on course 3, control 3, and coming pulling up too early on course 3, control 6. ari was way faster, saw him coming out of C3-4 while i was going in. put some distance on ed by making the frontal assault on C1-5, and barely held him off through the end.

everyone's got their own take on poison ivy, and at one point we mentioned tecnu. i'm convinced the new stuff is homeopathic hogwash, but ed pointed out their older formula was more a straight abrasive, which seemed like an idea. i've bought into the 15-minutes-and-the-urushoil-is-bound school, but i still went at my legs with machinist's soap afterwards. mmmm, orangey, and pumicey.

Climbing (Gym) 2:15:00 [3]

better workout than usual - less crowded on wednesday and easier to keep up the pace. downclimbed every V1 i could find, except one V1+ that i didn't see before moving on to V2's. didn't get any V3's before moving on to toprope. could've cleaned a super crimpy 5.11b - my two hangs were from screwing up the sequence, not from grip failure. first technical crimp climb i've done well on, and a bit of a new high water mark. cleaned a 5.10a on lead, also a first. butchered a crimpy 5.10c on toprope, and then suuuuucked on the 5.10 uber-lead in the cave. i felt great, but it was a sweatly, ugly mess, with a hang and nearly every clip, and a shameful 15ft lead fall to end it. good workout, though.

switched climbing to wednesday, so snuck in a quick run in the rain. running in the rain's fun! HR was lower than I would've guessed for the pace - the benefits of a rain-cooled engine?

1:30 recovery, 23:25 5k pace
