Note

an AP thread caught my eye this winter - it was about using accelerometers to figure out time spent reading the map. now, knowing how much time i spend looking down isn't going to help my ultra-elite self in the slightest, but i like measuring things that can be measured, and that sounded easy enough. so i've been goofing around with an accelerometer on my last two o-tings (get it? get it?), and cooked this up from the CSU park-o at mystic river:

each dot represents one second, where a yellow dot is probably one spent looking at the map, and a blue dot is one spent getting merrily lost. readability suffers from an inspired route choice to control 1, via control 12.

turning accelerometer data into map-reading-guess was a bit slapdash, but the results seems true enough to memory. slower movement through rough terrain seems to get confused with reading the map, but that ought to be easy enough to filter out with a little more effort. a longer track would've helped, but rain and naked circuits don't get along so well.

Orienteering 42:55 intensity: (2 @0) + (17 @3) + (25:59 @4) + (16:37 @5) 5.21 km (8:14 / km) +326ft 7:31 / km
ahr:177 max:200 spiked:14/17c

man, was i pissed about this one. kicked ass (by ben standards) through 14 controls, was neck-and-neck with another runner almost the whole time, navigating independently and frequently ahead, then totally lost the plot for 15, and pooched 16. feh. kicked the legs up a gear without the same for the brain.

lost >2 minutes on #15, and at least 3:00 on #16. not super pleased with #3 or #8, either, but was consistently making progress. and #4 was no pearl. happy to have been on pace for fourth through 14 controls, though (winsplits here, looks like they didn't make it to AP, with all the likely loggers at the 'goat)

a question, for anyone who might be reading. is the distance quoted for each course the straightline distance from control to control, or a kind of best obvious route sort of thing? because this was posted as ~5k, and i've never had the actual-ben-distance be anywhere near that close. or that quick for a '5k' green, by nearly 15 minutes. also, QR says 3.8k straightline. hrmm..

Orienteering 23:35 intensity: (11 @2) + (9 @3) + (10:08 @4) + (13:07 @5) 4.31 km (5:28 / km) +80ft 5:19 / km

Mystic River Park-o in a light drizzle. Forgot a punch card, punched the map. First ever punch punching!

1- Hadn't really grasped the scale, went to 12 first (15s)
2- went to the wrong side of the bush for 2 (10s)
4- coulda been more direct (10s)
6- rotated the world 90 degrees. in the wrong direction. (50s)
11 - coulda been more direct (15s)

total lost, 1:40
smart ben time: 21:56
but honestly, i have the cardio capacity of a hamster, and didn't have much more to give. probably could've made up over half of the time lost just by clipping distance, though.

Climbing (Gym) 2:00:00 [3]

boulderin' and boulderin'. bagged a pile of V2's, a handful of V3's, and even one V4. downclimbed almost everything too, until i tore a nasty flapper (google at your own risk) off of my pinky finger. then slacklining and idle banter. i think there's another 10 in the super-cave that i could lead.
