Orienteering race 1:06:04 [3] 3.89 km (16:58 / km) +167m 13:58 / km
shoes: Icebugs

Almost didn't go to Tarrywile (Danbury) because of horrible weather forecast of heavy rain and high wind with gusts to 40mph, but the forecast changed at 8 am for the better and I scooted on down. It was clear by the time I got there but the wind was as forecast. As I got out of the car a heavy 35' tree limb crashed to the ground about 15 meters away across one of the paths to the O station with a thunderous crash. Wondering whether I should brought a hardhat, I took the alternate path.

My vow to remember to push the lap button on my Garmin at each control failed pretty soon. Good that I don't chew gum because surely my small mind could not handle that and walking at the same time.

I did OK but did not do well at the top of the hill. My route.

I am still wondering whether I should have started by going back to the parking lot to the north and then south on the road, but I took the straight route up a steep 4 contour hill. Slow but got the warm up over and done with and the all the body parts moving OK. 1 was easy with the Mansion (in ruins, and which I had never seen before) in plain site.

Picked my way over to 2 without problems, finding the map jived with what I was seeing. On 3 I kept stopping too early, not realizing there were more ridges to cross than I had originally thought. Messed around 4 or 5 minutes before spotting the very narrow reentrant. A better route might have been to go due east to pick up the trail from the Mansion, but I suspect it would have been invisible under the leaves given the high winds.

4 had a lot more rows of cliffs than mapped, and coming around the south end of the spur I was too low. Wasn't sure which hut to the south I was siting (apparently it's one hut low, one radio tower up higher to the east) but finally I climbed up the spur and found 4.

5 was easy given the big boulder. I intended to reach 6 by going east of the out-of-bounds houses but descended too quickly and found skirting around the southern house was too daunting. So changed plan and went around northward. Picked the right spot to leave the road, went over the hill and into 6. I overran 7 by 25 meters, espied the house and turned around.

On way to 8, the trail along the lakeside is rooty. Fortunately when at the dam I examined the map closely to find the right trail northward. Good that I forsook trying the field: it looked unmowed. Pace counting clued me when to look right for the flag down in the nook.

I figured 9 was the north end of the barn I could see as I approached (the hollow, long rectangle on the map is hidden underneath my track), but nothing there! Turns out the barn is not on the map and the rectangle was a 10m x 2m cement trough with overgrown veg wall to wall. Flag was hanging a few meters south of the n.w. corner, away from the area of the unmapped barn where I came in, so I didn't spot until after wandering around for a minute.

So I found them all. My pace wasn't too bad considering the climb and the amount of time standing still scratching my head in doubt on 3 and 4. While not a stellar performance, I left feeling a lot happier than a few events earlier this season.

Note

It's the season when I question why I ever put gutters on the house. Fortunately, not many leaves this year. Hassling the ladders went OK but I am ignoring the too high SE side. Raking, blowing and shoveling the leaves accumulated around the foundation was aided greatly by gusts of strong winds out of the NW. That should do it for this year.
