Orienteering race 1:49:46 [3] 6.99 km (15:42 / km) +207m 13:41 / km

Huntington SP Green. Navigation was OK, wasn't too far off but had to search around 3, 11, and 12. By and large, I was in contact with the map the whole way except for some deviation on 10, 11, and 12. Endurance is not what it was 18 months ago when I did the 4.8km (crow flight) Brown in 89.46. Was exhausted at about 9. The toughest choice was how to climb up to 11. But it was a gorgeous day, nice course and control descriptions, open woods.

Lack of pace and endurance is not surprising or discouraging. I haven't trained consistently for over a year while dealing with groin, hip and other medical concerns; I'm just recovering from a bad sinus cold; and I hoofed 9.5 km yesterday with Charlie with over 250m of ascent. Will resume hike-and-swim sessions soon. When is warmer weather coming to CT?

Hiking 28:10 [3] 2.28 km (12:21 / km) +50m 11:08 / km

Sunny, about 60, snow and ice just about all gone. Just plow tailings left. Suffering from cold but felt walking up a sweat would help. It did. Used iPhone 5s for GPS tracking, good ATT signal. Need to try it with cell coverage disabled to see how good the built in GPS works on its own.

Note

I'm giving up on Garmin. My FR 305, which Garmin replaced last year when my Lap button gave up the ghost, failed again. First it was the intermittency of the Lap button last Saturday, then the battery died Sunday. While there are You Tube how-tos on replacing the battery, there's no easy cure for faulty buttons.

It occurred to me that my iPhone 5s may have all I need to produce tracks. A $4 investment in the GPS Tracks app and a trip up and down the long driveway confirms this. I'll be off to local merchants to pick up an armband for the iPhone.
