Note

Just posted the photos from yesterday's WCOC Sprints on my website.

An the most beautiful, healthy looking red fox just dashed past my window. We've been having a lot of nature here on our ridge this month.

7 AM

Hiking 28:00 [3] 2.1 km (13:20 / km)

4 RTs of driveway. Beautiful morning.

One of the young coyotes came by last night at midnight to howl and prowl around the top of our driveway. Turned on the flood lights to watch him.
2 PM

Orienteering 1:16:00 [3] 5.0 mi (15:12 / mi)

Walk/jogged two sprint courses Charlie set in his backyard (Ratlum Mountain).

There seems to be no end to stupid errors I can commit. On the second leg of the first course I saw that the next control was on a direct line with the edge of the barn. Away I go, getting validation every 25 meters (crossed a wall, met a trail, left at the tee, right on xth trail, expect 90 degree left and 90 right in the trail. Yup. Hit 'em all. But I had oriented myself on the wrong edge of the barn, which took me 90 degrees off intended course. Bailed on the 8th control when I could not find it.

The next course went smoothly. Easier, with controls on trails. And this time I stuck to the trails. Didn't realize until next day that I had skipped #4, which I passed within meters on my way to #5. Bad concentration all day.

Had fun taking pictures of what looked like a record turnout for the end of season WCOC picnic. Will post after "developing" them.

Swimming 50:00 [3] 1.1 mi (45:28 / mi)

2000 yards. Felt reasonably strong, going a bit faster but without time pressure. Flutter kick annoyed right hip, but breaststroke kick was without pain. Aerobic not a problem.

Hiking 24:00 [3]

Some arms on the gym set, then Recumbent bike 24 min., intervals, level 7.
4 PM

Note

There's a mewing, dying young coyote lying on its side in the corner of my garage. Called Animal Control, police dispatcher answer and said he'd seen my pictures of the coyotes on Canton Patch. An Environmental Control Officer is on his way here from Hartford. I'm not sure if one or two siblings might be in the area. I had seen one of the three dashing out of the garage yesterday.
5 PM

Note

A state environmental control officer has now carried away the dying coyote which was suffering from a bad case of mange.

Note

Young coyotes have been hanging around our house for the last week. They may be orphans, they may be sick. Don't know. But here is what they look like: three little coyotes in Connecticut.

A few moments ago I went into our garage where we keep our garbage cans, and one of these little rascals was in there and promptly ran away.

Fascinating, but I have no interest in getting too close.
1 PM

Hiking 25:00 [3] 2.0 km (12:30 / km)

Seeking whatever sunshine might bless my eyes this gray day, I went to Fisher Pond to walk one lap (2 km, say). Got halfway around and found the flooded lake was covering the road. Came back in the woods taking the trail along side the river. Nice trail.
