Note

Went in to work to see two emergencies that fit the narrow criteria to be both essential and low risk of infection (risk is mostly to me and my staff). No charge but glad to do something semi-useful. I wish the Royal College would either help us get the right protective equipment to deal with regular dental emergencies or order most dentists to close up completely and designate a limited number of emergency clinics with sufficient PPE so my patients can get their broken teeth and lost fillings at least temporarily replaced

There are 15-minute Covid tests being developed. Not cheap, but they may help remove some uncertainty.

I wonder if work will ever be the same again when this is all over. This may be the beginning of the end for my career, although I know it will be gang-busters once we can safely work again.

Note

More googling, and I heard mention of a mythical tire lever method to seat a super-stubborn tubeless bead.

Eventually found this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE3h4nmDdOo
A bit hard to exectute, but then pumped up the reservior, popped the valve and “spang”!! Done in one!

Sunday Mar 29, 2020 #

Note

Decided to de-snowtire the ‘bent, at least the front end, as it was dumping rain or howling wind out.
Switched back to the summer fork and 2.3” studded skinny on my old wheel.
I took off the big studded snow tire, then spent way too long trying to get the summer tire back on the carbon rim. Lots of mess but no success. Stan’s sealant everywhere. I think they changed the rim tape when the shop mounted the big tire. I guess I could log pumping up the air reservoir to 220 PSI and blasting it into the tire unsuccessfully at least 25 times with various rim strap options.

In other news- Did have several nice Zoom sessions with friends and family during the day, including a particularly amusing one with my brother trying to get Mom talked through the process.

Saturday Mar 28, 2020 #

Note

Good thing I got out yesterday. Not only heavy rainfall warning now, but they are asking us to stay off the Bruce Trail. Sigh.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Workout 1. Moving up in weights a bit. This usually precedes some sort of strain that makes me back off again.

Orienteering 1:44:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (44:00 @2)
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Orienteering course in the Humber valley with Bash. CoachLD set this up for us, and we got to see some spots we never knew existed back there.
Thanks for the course and the finisher take-out soup, LD!

Running 1:49:08 [3] 12.47 km (8:45 / km) +410m 7:31 / km

Haffy and the Dingle with Bazingadog. Amazing spring day out- sunny, no wind, buds starting to green up and birds singing. Even saw a butterfly.
Some good hills, and a lot of stops for the big guy to sniff, pee, bain-de-neige or drink at creeks.
Still a lot of ice on the Dingle trails, and plenty of deep corn snow for the big boy.

Thursday Mar 26, 2020 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 3, some rehab, core and KB and hauled another load of wood.

Wednesday Mar 25, 2020 #

Strength 40:00 [2]

Hauling some firewood loads out of the bush etc.

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Run in to work to do admin, and inventory our masks and gloves to donate to the local hospital.

I detoured to the singletrack out of courtesy when a group of ladies mooned me- they all decided to take a pee break right off the main trail. Lots of embarrassed laughter as I averted my gaze and rerouted.

Tuesday Mar 24, 2020 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Full workout 2 with rehab and some extra core.

Strength 45:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Palgrave West and the closed Duffy’s lane with the big boy.

Duffy’s Lane parking lot was jammed! I think the Hwy 50 one is closed.

Monday Mar 23, 2020 #

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Off for a ride on new snow.
Snow was wet and sticky, and clogged up the spikes a bit so the crusty trails of Palgrave West were much better than the ice of Palgrave East would be.
The beast-mode tires rode really well on lumpy crust.

I also had to stop for another phone call and 11 work-related texts.

Sunday Mar 22, 2020 #

Hiking 30:00 [1]

Had to take 3 crisis phone calls from family members during the run about a health-issue (non-Covid hospitalization) but it was too cold not to at least hike briskly.

Strength (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [3]

This one was all continuous heaving and splitting 30-40kg logs with maul and sledgehammer, as I’m hanging up the big boy tools after this.
Hard work out! I was setting myself up for hauling and stacking for the next little while. So much more fun than working out in my gym!
10 AM

Running 1:30:17 [3] 11.66 km (7:45 / km) +296m 6:52 / km
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Albion Hills with Bazingadog. Beautiful crisp bluebird day, and trails were frozen except for some South-facing hills. Lots of ice, and the big guy had a hard time finding snow to roll in.

Saturday Mar 21, 2020 #

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

Nice cold morning, so I took the gopro and went puttering around Palgrave East. I was out for hours, and spent time setting up shots and re-taking them. Editing should give me hours of pleasant work.

Strength (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [2]

With all the Covid stuff going on I am going to hang up my axe and sledgehammer Monday. Health services will be busy enough in the next while.
I split a big pile of wood, and will do some more tomorrow, then it’s just nice safe hauling and stacking. Great way to spend a sunny cold day.

Cycling 32:06 [3] 14.58 km (27.3 kph) +222m

Zwift- just a little spin after going in to work to see a couple of patients to complete some cases that can’t last. Howling winds too high to run to work.

Thursday Mar 19, 2020 #

Strength 1:15:00 [2]

Workout 2 and lumberjack - split some, moved 2 loads.
(Also cleaned out and organized the workshop a bit. Ugh)

Wednesday Mar 18, 2020 #

Hiking 1:30:00 [0]

Good 4-dog hike with Knobless and the beasts Paddington, Alfie and Thompson. No touchee.

BZdog was good on his longline except for one area of spectacular venisonity where Paddington ran off for 5 min and BZdog would have happily lead the expedition. He’s not used to being among the smaller of the dogs, but had a great time especially with Thompson.
9 AM

Cycling 1:35:29 [3] 13.77 km (8.7 kph) +220m

Excellent tootle around Palgrave East while it’s still frozen in the morning.
The singletrack was a ribbon of shiny ice but a fun ride with studs and caution. Most of the doubletrack was refrozen ice too, but some was crunchy snow and a bit was frozen bare ground. I skipped some of the steepest singletrack.

Just loving the winter ‘bent in beast mode right now,

Tuesday Mar 17, 2020 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 plus core and rehab, and hauled and stacked another load of wood.

Running 50:00 [3]

Tour of the ‘hood with the big boy.
Still feeling my knee from skate skiing.

Too soft to bike- wish it would freeze up or dry out.

Monday Mar 16, 2020 #

Note

Well, we're locked down. Emerg treatments only. Wish it was a few weeks ago during prime ski season...

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Bike in to help close up work. It was a mix of crunchy crust, some bare ground, and a lot of boiler plate ice. The new bad ass tires worked well. Way home was more soft crust but still lots of ice.

Strength 45:00 [2]

Hauled and stacked a couple of loads of wood as it thawed out.
Also hand-sawed part of a tree that’s been frozen across the trail for a month, and made a passage.

XC ski-Skate 44:19 [3] 12.44 km (16.8 kph) +233m

Beautiful bluebird day.
Went out with 2 slowpokes named Tarno and the Ryddler, and managed to hang on for a full lap before my knee was done with skate skiing. Maybe the fastest I’ve gone in years.

XC Skiing 49:30 [3] 11.18 km (13.6 kph) +209m

Switched to classic with hard wax, (Rode Multigrade) and had a good lap, until the wax just gave out on the last uphill.

11 AM

XC ski-Skate 1:09:09 [3] 16.49 km (14.3 kph) +301m

Highlands retro day.
Fairly quick corn snow, even on my ancient and dubious retro skate equipment.

I skied everything once and repeated yellow and some orange, but my knee was protesting from last weekend’s ski-o-fest so headed in.

Friday Mar 13, 2020 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 3, rehab and also split and hauled a couple of loads of firewood now that it’s melted out. Too windy to venture in the woods.

Thursday Mar 12, 2020 #

Running 58:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Icy run with the big boy. Had to help him up a boblsed-run hill.
Could use more spikes on a short part of the commute.

Wednesday Mar 11, 2020 #

Note
(rest day)

Funeral (old family friend- it was his time) and tech issues = physical rest day.

Tuesday Mar 10, 2020 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Foggy run in a little soft snow followed by muddy bare ground and mostly ice.
Run home was almost all hardpack ice. BZdog was sliding all over the place.
Overdressed in the AM, left my jacket and was underdressed for the run home in bright sunshine but 10 degrees cooler.

XC ski-Skate race (Ski-o) 1:43:06 [4] 20.18 km (11.7 kph) +375m

Ski-o long. We had 2 maps.
I was leapfrogging with Eddie Nosnhoj who started behind me.
I made a few dumb errors on map 1, including 2 that involved climbing back up and bushwhacking to avoid going backwards on a 1-way trail. At least I was all legal. Eddie got some time on me at the last error near the bottom of Murphy’s loop.

Map 2 I managed to navigate cleanly, and passed Eddie again with some good route choices. I leapfrogged Errol too. I learned from mistakes on the sprint and lap 1.
Ended up 50 seconds behind Eddie, (6th overall and first old guy), just ahead of Errol the young Mac ski racer and just under 10 min behind The Ryddler who won overall. Milla was second.

Hard racing on a gorgeous day. My knee didn’t thank me for all the offset climbing, but still a great day.

Saturday Mar 7, 2020 #

XC ski-Skate race (Ski-o) 35:45 [4]

Ski-o Sprint Scenic Caves
Perfect bluebird day, spring skiing.
I didn’t really make any mistakes, but took 1 sub-optimum route choice, and ended up in a pack with The Ryddler, Milla and some fast male Mac racers.

Milla Tarno ended up winning overall!
12 PM

XC Skiing warm up/down 16:32 [2] 3.6 km (13.1 kph) +54m

XC ski-Skate warm up/down 9:32 [1] 1.49 km (9.4 kph) +6m

Friday Mar 6, 2020 #

Note

Ugh- computer upgrades at work went way overtime and ate the whole day.

Thursday Mar 5, 2020 #

Running 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Easy hike/jog with the injured AD. Snowshoe-drop at conservation area border.

Wednesday Mar 4, 2020 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

I got smart and used snowshoes until I reached the conservation area, then bushed them and ran in shoes. Slushy in spots, lumpy on the night run home with BZdog.

Tuesday Mar 3, 2020 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]
shoes: La Sportiva Blizzard

Run with the big guy. 1/3 post-holing, the rest crust or slush.
Felt pretty good, knee is ok.

Monday Mar 2, 2020 #

Note

Feeling pretty good today.
We used poles both days on the weekend, which seemed to preserve my knee nicely.

Snowshoeing 6:46:35 [3] 28.89 km (14:04 / km) +574m 12:48 / km

Snowgaine day 2.
Always a bit rough waking up on day 2.
Sadly we'd decided again not to ski due to road-running sections. Bash had packed a spare set of snowshoes so I used those. I was on my spare compass too.

Bright, sunny and a bladder-hose-freezing -17 to start but warmed up throughout the day to almost spring skiing weather.

Bash had seen that we were doing surprisingly well on day 1 (Leading our Masters Co-ed category) so stayed up late rethinking our plan for max points rather than an easier day out.
We got a lot of controls fairly early on in the western end, before heading North and around.
Bash's nav was right on, and we executed the extended plan well, getting some of the controls that were a bit of a stretch goal.

Great ending to a weekend of excellent racing. Bash and I had a ton of fun and raced well, despite my equipment issues.

Official results aren't in yet, but WT (Bob and Scotty) cleaned the course and finished early for the overall win.

Harps and Jack also cleaned the course to win open male.

Alex Provost and Karine won Co-ed.

Bash and I won our category too, although it's unclear if they called us Super-Veteran, Veteran co-ed or Veteran. If it was Veteran, WT was in our category so we would be second to them.
