Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Topo Terraventure

2-dog run after work yesterday, and a run in to work with AD.
The FDFs are still epic in Mad Dog Meadow.

Loading up boats etc for the trip too.

Night run home.

Monday Jul 29, 2019 #

Cycling 55:00 [3]

Dogless ride via singletrack and longer route home.

Running 2:10:43 [3] 16.15 km (8:06 / km) +587m 6:51 / km
shoes: Topo Ultraventure Blue

Hockley prov park with repeats.
Another hot day, but maybe a little less humid.
I felt strong for the first time in 2 weeks.
Finished a bladder of Infinit around the 2hr mark, and had some water too.

I’m taking off the “sick” flag.

Saturday Jul 27, 2019 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Partial workout 3, rehab, and some heaving and hauling of logs as well as some trail clearing. Hot and sticky.

Friday Jul 26, 2019 #

Running 2:29:51 [3] 17.78 km (8:26 / km) +648m 7:08 / km
(sick) shoes: Topo Ultraventure Blue

Dingle and Haffy on another hot humid day. Repeats on some of the hills. I was sluggish- the only thing running well was my nose. My lungs seem better though.

Note- finished a full bladder of infinit 5min before the end. Also had 1l in the car to and from the run.

Thursday Jul 25, 2019 #

Running 27:00 [3]
shoes: Topo Terraventure

Run in with the big guy, but got a ride home rather than run him back at 30c.

Wednesday Jul 24, 2019 #

Cycling 52:00 [1]

Very easy commute with AD. His shoulder is improved, and so are the FDFs.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Workout 2 plus rehab, and a few TRX bits.

Running 57:00 [3]

2-dog run to work, and back in the dark. The big guy’s full of beans on his thyroid meds.

Monday Jul 22, 2019 #

Running 56:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Topo Terraventure

Easy run with the big boy. Lungs still feel tight, and snot-rockets abound.

Sunday Jul 21, 2019 #

Note

Ugh, lungs feel very tight, and I sure feel worked.

Adventure Racing race 7:49:48 [3] 50.21 km (9:21 / km) +859m 8:37 / km
(sick)

RockstAR with Hammer.
Forecast was for high in the 30s and humidex in the 40s. Hottest ever.
I still wasn’t feeling 100%, so we agreed to dial back the pace and break as needed.

We had debated biking on roads to the South for some high value controls, but Hammer agreed with Bash’s plan to bikewhack into the ATV trails to the East and around the North for the big points there.

Started with a paddle prologue again. It was even hot on the paddle!

The bikewhack was absolutely steaming, and I called a break after. The ATV trails were relentlessly tough, and the deerflies were the worst I’ve ever seen in spots. Hard to ride a tricky line on a muddy downhill with one in your ear and another in your mouth.

We made a point of detouring to every body of water we could see, from swimming in the lake by the portage to sitting in puddles in creeks or splashing water from bogs if they weren’t too nasty. The farthest NW control was at a dam, and we spent a good 5 min lounging in the river, slugging water from my filter flask.
Hammer was strong, but I was lagging behind, and doing worse than usual on the atv mud pits.
Mercifully we had some road riding and met Dee and Bash who were doing well. We had to boogie back to make the 6pm check-in cutoff, including the nasty ride/hike/carry around the East side of Bark Lake. We had to skip a 70 pointer and the SUP we’d planned.

I was pretty cooked by the time we got back to the hub, but after a coke and a rest while Hammer did the diving control I felt a bit better. We just did the closer task-based controls and moseyed in 15 min early.

It turns out we were 8th overall and 4th in our category, and all but 1 team ahead of us had gone South.
The Tarnos crushed the co-ed, but sadly Bash and Dee missed the 6pm cut-off.

Hammer was strong (and patient) throughout despite the heat, and I was just working to keep up this time, but we had a fun day out rather than killing ourselves for a top result.

Another rest day. Hacking ugly.

Running 28:00 [2]
shoes: Topo Terraventure

Commute with the big boy. Another steaming sauna out- arrived drenched.

Canmore Cold seems to be going into my lungs. Not the best timing.

Hiking 45:00 [1]
shoes: Topo Terraventure

Too hot to run home with the big boy and my lungs could use a break so we did a brisk hike.
FDFs were out in force.

Monday Jul 15, 2019 #

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Ride in with Bazingadog, who was brisk in the cool morning, but dogless ride home.

Still have my cold.

Saturday Jul 13, 2019 #

9 AM

Running 2:35:00 [3] 20.15 km (7:42 / km) +715m 6:32 / km
shoes: Hoka Stinson ATR 4

Healy Pass with a big group of Canmore runners.
Feeling my cold today.

I felt sluggish at the start, but once I warmed up I felt good and ran up with Adam Campbell and Fitzy. Trail was mostly runnable, and we regrouped a couple of times. Gorgeous alpine meadows, and jaw-dropping views.

I waited up for Carbon, Bash and Myka at the pass, while CO went on to Egypt Lake and Pharaoh Peak. I ran back wth the ladies.
Despite my cold I felt good, and part of me wanted to go the long route with the gang, but CO ended up being out for over 7 hours and that might have been a bit much.

See Bash’s log for pics.

Hike up with Flight, Celia, Bash and Carbon for a view over the Spray lakes.

Nice to catch up with Flight, and good views for a relatively short outing.

Note- woke up with a cold.

Floe Lake and Numa Pass 2019 from Richard Ehrlich on Vimeo.

We had done this on a backpacking trip 28 years ago. The hike up is very different now after forest fires- lots of meadows with wildflowers and standing dead trees, with more open views.

The headwall seemed a lot less steep without a 38kg pack, and Floe lake was gorgeous. From there it’s alpine meadows and forest up to the pass, with phenomenal views of the Rockwall.

We jogged back down, and it made for a pretty big day after an energetic week. Nice dinner at Sage after.

Running 3:41:03 [2] 16.4 km (13:29 / km) +703m 11:06 / km
shoes: Topo Ultraventure Blue

Arnica and Twin Lakes with Carbon, Myka and Bash.
The rain held off, and it was a nice outing. Footing was soggy on the way back, but the enchanted forest was cool.
Very nice lunch at Storm Mtn Lodge after.

Running 3:33:20 [3] 13.87 km (15:23 / km) +1029m 11:13 / km
shoes: Hoka Stinson ATR 4

Corey/Edith Pass- good pics on Bash’s log.
We had planned to hike near Lake Louise, but the crowds were astounding- no car access and over 2 hour wait for shuttle bus!
Back to plan B, Corey Edith pass.

Excellent climb, gorgeous views up top, then through the spectacular Gargoyle Valley in nice clear weather.

Running 2:50:58 [3] 9.71 km (17:36 / km) +1004m 11:36 / km

Lady Mac with Bash. We tried to fit this into a small weather window- fully socked in this morning.

Made it down before the rain.

9 AM

Running 2:30:02 [3] 12.89 km (11:38 / km) +947m 8:31 / km
shoes: Topo Ultraventure Blue

Out West, we met up with the Carbons, Myka and Slice and Steve.
The plan was to do a lollypop up Mt Collembola, across to Mt Allen and back.
Morning looked good, but chance of thunderstorms starting at 11 and increasing through the afternoon.

I headed up at a solid pace with Slice, CO, Steve, Tom & Heather.

We turned off the main trail to Mt C, and Slice leg us up a steep bushwhack for a while, then a steep open slope.

As we got near the false summit the weather took a dive, with thunder booming. We gave it a minute but it got worse, so we headed back down.

We had to hunker to wait out pelting rain, blasting winds and pea-sized hail.

https://photos.smugmug.com/RE-2019/i-QqMSbDq/0/d6d...

The hail made for a slippery AR-type bushwack down to the main trail, then Steve and I bombed it back to the car, meeting the ladies near the bottom.

It was brilliant sunshine by the time we got back.

Nice brunch at the Iron Goat instead of the summit.

Cycling 2:03:13 [3] 26.18 km (12.7 kph) +433m
