8 AM

Running 1:16:09 [3] 11.46 km (6:39 / km) +211m 6:05 / km
shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR

A little quicker early morning run around the 'hood. I tried to find some elusive speed for a few short bits. Not there yet, but at least back-to-back runs were possible, and leg was tight but manageable.

Running 3:02:19 [3] 22.58 km (8:04 / km) +874m 6:46 / km
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

Hockley loop with Goose. Pole-hiked the uphills, kept it dialed back on the open downhills, and it went pretty well. First long run since March.

We started early but it got steamy hot by the middle open sections. Leg was good hiking the ups and taking the technical descents a bit easy, but hurt on the road stretches.
Great to be back in the woods in full spring greenery.

Did a lot of rehab after, and leg isn't too bad.

Note- tried to slug as much liquid as I could. Had 1L Infinit at full strength (4 scoops +1 s-cap), about 600 ml water and half a mini coke can.
Definitely dehydrated at the end, but any more intake and it'll slosh.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 and a whole lot of rehab.

Wednesday May 25, 2016 #

Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

Long physio appt, then a run in to work with AD. Did the whole thing with some extra hills at a fairly good clip. Leg was tight by the end but I managed.

Running 26:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

Nice night run home with AD. Leg was tight.

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Easy commute with the big boy. We had time for the Rollercoaster route.

Strength 50:00 [3]

Boot camp. Last long sequence of hamstring and glute leg lifts was a bit much for my leg but otherwise not too bad.

Hiking 40:00 [2] 2.0 km (20:00 / km) +145m 14:41 / km

Hike the hounds
9 AM

Running 1:13:40 [3] 6.34 km (11:38 / km) +436m 8:39 / km

3 PM

Hiking 40:00 [3]

Short scoot to test out the fixed Kodiak 'bent.

Sunday May 22, 2016 #

Hiking 45:00 [3] 3.0 km (15:00 / km) +130m 12:20 / km

Early hike with the hounds up Cascades.
10 AM

Running 3:33:06 [3] 17.08 km (12:29 / km) +1403m 8:51 / km
shoes: New Balance 1210v2

More hills with Bash and Browner. Less running, more climbing, and going down the trails was easier on me than running down the steep ski hills.

Running (Hike/jog) 3:39:31 [2] 17.41 km (12:37 / km) +899m 10:01 / km
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

Up, down and around Blue Mtn.
First time up was a hike with the hounds who just went nuts. Once we got them back at HQ we did 3 more, running gently in between and trotting down. My leg did OK, hiking up felt good, but it got tight by #4 and I pulled the plug while Bash did a couple more.

Note

Cool blog from 'bent rider Jason Perez. He crushed the 200 mile Central Coast Double Century record so hard that the aid stations and finish line weren't even set up yet. 14,000 feet of climbing too.

I like his description of coming into an aid station racing hard in front, and bewildered volunteers suggest he walk around to the back to find lunch, when all he needs is a very quick water refill.

Running 50:00 [1]

(70 min) Easy hike/ jog with BZdog on the "take it easy" list.

Wednesday May 18, 2016 #

Cycling 55:00 [3]

Ride in with AD.
Rushed morning with physio appt.

Note- physio thinks I'm making progress, greenlight for hiking hills with poles, but still supposed to keep the running down. No downhill blasting.

Ride back just as it got dark. AD's first night ride home, and he was very good on his harness and bikejoring setup. We saw 3 sets of deer.

Tuesday May 17, 2016 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Back to boot camp. Taking it easy on some exercises, skipped one, but mostly went fine.

Monday May 16, 2016 #

Cycling 52:00 [2]

Easy ride with the big boy. Sunny and frosty on the way in, torrential downpour home- arrived completely soaked through.

The big guy's left leg is sore, so I'll have to drive him tomorrow.

Storm The Trent Warsaw

Nasty weather forecast- rain and cold. Going in injured and undertrained the plan was to cruise the day.
We started on boats- Storm had shortened the paddle and lengthened the first trek a bit. I got out front off the start, but realized I was pushing too hard and dialed it back. DD went like a torpedo, and Bash passed me too. I would have had to redline to reel them in.

Off to the bikes for a short ride to the first trek at Warsaw Caves. I was able to jog along, but no putting the hammer down. I leapfrogged the Ripkin AR boys here quite a bit. Took the road run back to the bikes which was faster, and I was glad I was in running shoes.

Saw DD, Ripkin and Wokitokis at the transition to bikes. The Queens Polecats team had already left. I passed Ripkin but other than that never saw a soul on the marked bike route or the Elite section to the next trek. The dirt roads were getting ugly in the pouring rain, but I enjoyed cruising along on the bike. At the t/a there were a lot more bikes than I expected- I had gone South on the marked route out of CP2 but it turns out you could go North and rejoin on a shorter route with less climb.

Second trek was more of a shuffle as my leg was sore. I stayed in bike shoes and helmet and sling pack to save TA time. DD and Wokitokis had made up big time.
I passed Pullin Foot in the transition to bike. At the final trail run Chad was just leaving as I arrived. This one was a jog/hike for me, then back on the bikes. I caught Queens and we rode a paceline. Their bad-@ss female was in front, and I took pulls on the flats but got complaints I was hard to draft.

Next up was a classic AR ATV trail. I passed Queens on the rocky bits and got Long Sault on the mud, but Queens rode away from me in the slimy muck and deep sludge pits. My gears and legs complained on the last few big hills, but the cruise in was nice.

DD crushed it in under 6 hrs. Wokitokis Chad and Meredythe were a solid second. Queens finished 5 min ahead of me, and Long Sault about 5 min behind, so I was 4th and first old guy.

The mighty Bash was first female.

Storm ran a precision race despite nasty conditions.

I was pleased to be able to cruise well on the bike despite underperforming on the run and a lack of long training. Leg still gave me trouble but no cramping or stomach issues this race.

Friday May 13, 2016 #

Note

Going to give Storm a try. Hopefully I can get my head around doing it as a nice tour instead of a full-on race. Goal is to minimize the price for going in injured with no long endurance training.

Hiking (Tire shlep) 45:00 [3]
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

AD and I took poles and Schlep jr out for a hike/jog. Leg was fine with this.

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Easy commute with the Big Boy. Riding the BBW 'bent felt weird after the Kodiak.

Paddlng 15:00 [2]

Running 2:04:37 [3] 12.6 km (9:54 / km) +256m 8:59 / km
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

Out with the dogs and BGY exploring the Dingle block. Some jogging, some hiking, used poles. Got a great tour of areas I'd never seen. Farthest I've gone since hurting my leg.

Cycling 1:45:00 [3] 13.42 km (7.7 kph) +203m

Gorgeous day for riding.
Took the beasts out locally, then went down to Albion. First time doing the full loop on the carbon Kodiak- fail. Broke the rear shock mount.
Back to the aluminum 'bent for Storm.
Still a perfect bluebird day and I had a good ride until the break, luckily near the car.
Garmin missed a bunch.

Running 55:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

2 on 1 off run to work with AD. Leg still tight and a bit sore evan after a couple of days with no running.
Maybe hiking with Schlepp may be easier on it.

Paddlng (Erg) 15:00 [2]

Little spin on the trainer. Lots of rehab too.

Wednesday May 4, 2016 #

Cycling 1:25:00 [3]

Great ride down to Albion, around my favourite NE trails and back to meet Logan's rescuer and friends.
Next I harnessed up the big boy for an extended ride to work via a nice cool pond. Enjoying the riding a ton, but I'm feeling the lack of exercise in the last month.

Cycling 25:00 [2]

Night ride home. Late, but I love it.

Running intervals 55:00 [2]
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 2.5

Commute with AD, 2run1walk. My leg was pretty tight after, so this is enough right now.

Sunday May 1, 2016 #

Strength 30:00 [2]

Workout 2 and a lot of rehab

Running intervals 40:00 [2]

Took the big guy pit again for 1on 1 off. We hiked some of the highest hills here which felt fine, but I could feel my leg if I got some speed up on the flats. Sinuses pounded with every stride, so good incentive to run smoooothly.
Lots of foam roller after.
