Running (Commute) 26:00 [3]

Quick icebug in to work.

Strength (Core) 25:00 [2]

Hard Core Class. No crunches of death this time.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Yoga class.

Cycling 43:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (25:00 @3) + (13:00 @4)

Trainer watching Tom Boonen and a few others in the TDFlanders ride up the Konenburg (sp) while the entire rest of the pack had to walk up the 20 degree slope. In sympathy I really cranked it up the hills.

Strength (Home gym) 55:00 [2]

Workout # 1.

Between sets I did Range of Motion physio for bulletdog, and put the finishing touches on my ski-O map holder.

Running (Commute) 40:00 [1]
shoes: Icebugs 2

Easy trot home with T-dog. All the snow's melted into an icy base.

Tuesday Jan 29, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 54:00 [2]

Easy commute in great conditions.

Note- I'm still a bit zonked from Saturday. After such a long period of level 1-3 training only, I really don't have my high gear any more, and it sure seems to take longer to get back than it did 20 years ago.

Orienteering (Thomas) 48:00 [4]
ahr:175 max:188 shoes: Icebugs 2

Vivien Forest.
Good day for a handicap! I started out really tired and sore, but after yesterdays nav disaster I used conservative route choice, solid attack points and didn't make any nasty errors. The elites caught me from 2-3 but when my shoe came off I did the rest alone, which worked well. Ended up 5th.

XC Skiing 20:00 [1]

Short ski with the T-dog, who deserved some exercise.

Yoga 23:00 [1]

RY's yoga for flexibility with Bash.

Adventure Racing (Stars Winter race) 2:31:00 intensity: (4:00 @2) + (22:00 @3) + (1:06:00 @4) + (59:00 @5)

With Bash and 3Pin. (Including cooldown)
The Duke designed an interesting course, with several matrix sections where one person had to do most of the controls in each box. There was no obvious easy split up, and also no obvious advantage of skate vs classic.

First was a snowshoe matrix, and we gave Ultra-runner 3-pin 6 controls. He came in a few minutes behind a speedy Bender.

Next, 5 Ski-O CPs, which went fine with Bash navigating. After that- the ski Matrix. Foolishly we assigned me to do 4 of the 6 controls, as I'm supposedly the strongest skier. Well, maybe physically, but I had a nasty parallel error at E which took me forever to sort out. I made a terrible route choice back, bushwhacking and breaking trail to avoid going the wrong way, to the wrong control no less. Arrghh! I was in zone 5 for 58 minutes here, and since I haven't been pushing it hard since my injury in September I arrived totally pooched, with knee and HR throbbing.

Bash had to wait 30 minutes for me! She and 3-pin were quite kind, more than I deserved. More ski CPs, and a star split to finish off.

Oh well, we managed to pull of a (distant )second to the victorious Bender, Tiny and Nosnhoj, by half an hour. Fun race!

Note

Results are up- Our split 5-6 (Ski matrix goofup) was 1:05 compared with MBR's 0.30. :(

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3. Took longer than usual, as I was winterizing bladder hoses and waxing skis between sets. With my busted knee I haven't packed for a race in a long time.

Thursday Jan 24, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 38:00 [2]

Easy commute with T-dog on a postcard-perfect morning.

Strength (Core) 25:00 [2]

Core class with Bash. Did I mention how much I *hate* long sequences of crunches with legs straight up or one hovering above the ground and the other straight up? I can't think of any training that hurts more.

Yoga 45:00 [1]

Caron's yoga class. She was having us hold awkward poses for 5 breaths today. Lots of moans and groans from the class, and evil chuckles from Caron.

Wednesday Jan 23, 2008 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2. I brought the Bulletdog down around the outside to supervise me.

XC Skiing (Commute +) 35:00 [3]

Just had time to squeeze in a couple of short extra loops, due to quick conditions.

XC Skiing (Commute) 26:00 [3]

Quick ski home (no dog).

Tuesday Jan 22, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute +) 1:20:00 [3]

Hard and fast trip to work, and a nice cruise around Palgrave East after work thanks to later daylight. Conditions are getting really good.

Monday Jan 21, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 40:00 [1]

Easy commute with T-dog, who tried a lot of bushwhacking while attached to me by a flexi leash.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core DVD with Bash

Sunday Jan 20, 2008 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Extra hard workout #1. Able to move up another half to one click on almost every exercise.

Running (Road) 1:24:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Road run with Bash, due to strong winds and caution about trees. Down to Albion via Duffy's, loop and back via Reddington.

We need just a touch more snow and it's back on the nice waxie skis.

Saturday Jan 19, 2008 #

Hiking 45:00 [1]

Hiking portion of our ski-and-trek outing, exploring some new territory.

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:20:00 [2]

Ski portion of our ski-and-trek outing. We went all over various bits of Palgrave E & W, etc. Fast, icy ski but not too bad.

Friday Jan 18, 2008 #

Cycling (trainer) 45:00 [3]

Another spin to the Tour of Flanders. I pushed hard up the "mountains".

Strength (Link) 1:00:00 [2]

Link workout + extra hamstring stuff.

Thursday Jan 17, 2008 #

Note

For all those that scorn my recumbent's comfy seat, I present the Real Man Saddle. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/real-man.html

XC Skiing (Commute) 40:00 [1]

An easy commute with T-dog. My throat was like sandpaper last night, so no hard ski today. Driving home.

Strength (Core) 25:00 [2]

Core class with the crunchmistress herself.

Yoga 45:00 [1]

Yoga class with Caron. I think she's going easier on us!

Wednesday Jan 16, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 54:00 [3]

Finally- colder conditions made for decent glide to and from work.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3. Fairly lethargic today- I think I've got a bit of Bash's cold.

Cycling 30:00 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (22:00 @3)

A fairly easy spin on the trainer, watching some of the Tour of Flandres.
Muddy cobblestones on narrow twisty roads in rain on road-racing tires- yuck!
Never seen so many wheel changes!

Tuesday Jan 15, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 40:00 [2]

Easy ski home with T-dog. She's pretty quick, when not stopped and snuffling.

Monday Jan 14, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 57:00 [3]

We got a little snow, so I skied to work in somewhat dubious conditions, and back on very sketchy snow. It still beats poncing around in icebugs, but only just barely.

Sunday Jan 13, 2008 #

Hiking 2:45:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco GTX + Screws

Hike with Bash, Goose and Phatty home from Glen Haffy. Afterwards I continued on with the long-legged Goose and Phatty through Albion Hills to the bridge on Duffy's, where the gallant Bash picked me up.

The lads are quick hikers. My knee was a little touchy after hiking on rough old snow, but still good times.

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2 + hamstring work on the ball. Up to my previous max levels on the cable gym.

Did some extra stretches too. Finally getting a little flexible in the hamstrings.

Saturday Jan 12, 2008 #

Running 1:05:00 intensity: (20:00 @3) + (40:00 @4) + (5:00 @5)
shoes: Icebugs 2

A good run out through Palgrave E. I mixed in some hill intervals and a few speed intervals with a generally quick pace, probably the first hard running workout I've had since September. Some dry ground, some soft crust, some ice.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core DVD with Bash.

Friday Jan 11, 2008 #

Cycling (Trainer) 1:00:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (45:00 @4)

Finished off the 00 TDF. Lance managed to finally pull off a stage win by doing the fastest 58K TDF time trial ever. Whew! Good hard ride for me too!

Strength (Home Gym +) 1:30:00 [2]

Workout #1- Hard workout, moved back up a bit.
Also did extra hamstring work, full set of stretches (not logged) and included a run out to saw and haul some logs off the trails.

Thursday Jan 10, 2008 #

Running (Commute) 28:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs 2

Good solid run to work on good solid frozen ground, some semi-frozen crusty snow and some mushy snow. Beats the oatmeal mud of yesterday.
Lots of trees down in the fire-damaged areas- I'll need to bring a saw out there.

Running (Commute) 35:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs 2

Easier jog with the T-dog. Only need headlamps for the second half now that it's getting light a bit earlier. My knee didn't mind the run today at all- maybe it's time to remove the "injured" flag.

Wednesday Jan 9, 2008 #

Strength (Link) 1:00:00 [2]

Good solid Link workout.

Cycling (Trainer) 45:00 intensity: (20:00 @2) + (25:00 @4)

A hard ride, watching stage 16 on the 00TDF. Heras dropped a bonked Lance by over 2 minutes, but then crashed just before the finish. I dunno, Lance is looking pretty tired... Then the power went out for 8 hours.

Monday Jan 7, 2008 #

Note

I had good intentions to ski to work, but I think I'm getting Bash's cold, and there's no way I could have skied home with the snow vanishing incredibly fast.

Strength (Home Gym) 40:00 [2]

A short evening blast.

Note- speaking of Blast, I was also setting up my new iBlaast light between sets. HID-bright LED that has umpteen other settings from Fry-Chicken to map-reading, and takes any of my battery packs or AAs.

Sunday Jan 6, 2008 #

Cycling (Trainer) 40:00 [3]

Watched Pantani drop Lance by 50 seconds in stage 15 of the 00 tour, now that the weather's getting soggy out there.

Friday Jan 4, 2008 #

XC Skiing 40:00 [3]

Early morning ski just after sunrise before a busy day of appointments.

Wednesday Jan 2, 2008 #

XC Skiing (Commute) 35:00 [4]

Hard work breaking trail to the office today in cold crisp conditions. I love it!

XC Skiing (Commute +) 40:00 [3]

Easier ski home with less trail breaking, by headlamp. Perfect conditions!

Misc (Hock-ay!) 10:00 [2]

I just had to log this. 1AM lake hockey, with only 2 leftie sticks and 2 headlamps among 7 of us. The goalies had show shovels.

I joined in part way, but we were out there for quite a while. I quickly realized that my knee wouldn't take any whacks out on the ice, so I took up the shovel in goal position, with Hansel and Andycam pounding in the goals on The Bakes. (Said Bakes scored a good one on me while on offence, with a strong assist from Phatty. Phat and Zoolander were a tough combo too.)

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:03:00 [3]

Broke trails through shin-deep new powder all around Palgrave West with Bash. Great conditions, solid workout, and so good to have even more fresh powder!
