Strength (Home Gym) 45:00 [2]

An easy workout 1, with some exercised modified to spare the knee.
NO leg strength exercises.

Paddlng (erg) 15:00 [1]

Easy, knee-friendly spin.

Hiking 15:00 [0]

Took the dogs and the trekking poles for a plod around the property. First walk since the surgery.

Note

Well, first day at work. Knee was fine at first, but got sore throughout the day.
On advil, using a stool to elevate the foot while working, and iced a bit at lunch.

Range of motion's not 100%, but part of that is the tensor I'm sure. I'll check it at home once I'm couching and icing it without the tensor.

Note

Being a good boy, sitting on my arse.
Knee's fine while sitting around, but sore to stand or walk.
It also doesn't bend all that well, of course.
I don't really need any painkillers, but will take advil to reduce inflammation.

Note

Well, after 327 days of meniscus problems, hobbling through only 7 races all year and a lot of exercises, ART, ice and meds, I'm finally getting knee surgery today.

It's definitely a lot better than it was last winter, and I can bike and hike pretty well without poles now.

I can even run a few km now with only moderate pain, but it's meant I can't train or race with Bash much, and when I do I'm mainly baggage. Hoping after this that I'll be ba-a-ack.

Note

Back from surgery. It was actually pretty cool. I had a light spinal anesthetic, and got to watch the surgery on the scope screen. I saw the tear, and watched him trim down the flappy bit. Also checked out the rest of the knee- there's a worn out bit under the patella that he can't fix.
The tear would definitely not have healed without surgery.

OK, hopefully back to running and racing with Bash soon, but I have a lot of catching up to do.

Cycling (Commute +) 1:00:00 [2]

Nice commute with the Bulletdog, with some singletrack on the return. Lots of folks out- met a biker, a hiker, a runner and another lab.

Wednesday Sep 22, 2010 #

Strength (Home Gymj) 1:10:00 [2]

Good solid workout #3. Sets of 12 chin-ups this time.
Also leg strength between sets, and some core.

Cycling (Commute) 25:00 [3]

World car-free day, so I biked down despite the rain. Lucked out and it wasn't too bad.

Running (Commute) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Vibram FF Trek

Magical run home- dead calm, brilliant moonlight- at times I turned off my light and just glided through the forest in my barefoot shoes. So much calmer than biking.

Worth the knee pain.

Note

Nice little film of Barbara setting the former female world record last year.

Note

Yep, knee's definitely sore.

Monday Sep 20, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute) 40:00 [2]

Quickie commute with Bulletdog.

Knee's a bit sore from Sunday, but not too bad. Hey, maybe I'm finally recovering and don't need surgery Friday... Nah, I can still barely run.

Running 1:10:00 [1]

Terry Fox "run" with Leanimal, Coach LD and Goose Jr.
Goose Jr jogged the first bit by himself, then I pushed him in the jogger at an easy run until the last bit, where the lovely ladies managed to coax him along. Pregnancy and Injury haven't slowed them down all that much!

Farthest I've run in many months. I think the jogger took a little weight off my stooopid knee.
12 PM

Cycling 54:00 intensity: (34:00 @3) + (20:00 @4) 23.33 km (25.9 kph) +134m

Out with Goose and Phats on the Omega with 26" fat tires.. I was a bit worried about my knee, and about keeping up to the 2 big Scots, especially Phats on his roadie, so I met them part way for a ride to Schomberg.

Started out pretty quickly until I blew up after the first km. Well, my rear tire blew right off the rim with a major explosion. Note to self- don't pump a tire with Stan's sealant up to 70PSI. Otherwise a nice ride. The Omega's fine with 2 big wheels on road. Next I need to try skinny slicks.

Great coffee at the Grackle, and back with the boys. One stop on the way back to rescue a newly hatched snapping turtle.

I ran into Crash on the drive back, who helped me re-Stan-ify my tire. no more high pressures.

Cycling 1:05:00 [3]

Beautiful ride down and through Albion North end. Trails are great and weather perfect for early fall.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #2 + legs. Gotta get the drumsticks tuned before surgery.

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

Note

World Human Power Speed Champs this week.
So far Sam Whittingam's a bit disappointed- only 81.5 MPH- 131KPH or so, a touch off his world record. Still lots of speed runs to go.

Barb Butoais just set a world female record, (75.7MPH/ 121.8 kph) and I think she's the 3rd fastest human.

Note

Anyone want baseball tickets for next Wednesday? Free!
I'm working.

Note

No training today- had to see the MD for a physical before tomorrow's pre-anaesthesia appt for next week's surgery. What a hassle to rush this all in (not that I'm complaining) as I hope they'll do it under local. Anybody know if you can get knee arthroscopy under local?

I did thave time to take T-dog for a 1km hike through the forest- her first one since her breathing emergency- we both love cool weather.

Cycling (Commute +) 1:00:00 [2]

Hmm, cool enough that Bulletdog went right by the ponds!

Monday Sep 13, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute +) 50:00 [2]

Nice and cool for the hound to bound. Some singletrack on the way home.

Sunday Sep 12, 2010 #

Cycling 1:58:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (38:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3)

Biked down to Albion to volunteer at the Fall Five 5K race.
I rode the bike trails first to see if the runner's course was obvious, then did about 6 laps of the course, testing, pacing and sweeping.

I was the pace (recumbent) bike for the 2.5k kid's race and the 5K race, in my fluorescent yellow top and blinding flashing light. The 12 year old who won the first race was doing 22kph downhill! The 5K was won in 17:33 by a kid in the under-16 category- I had to work on the climbs to stay in front.
Goose Sr put in a very quick time!

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 + legs.

Thursday Sep 9, 2010 #

Note

Bah- 3 days after getting stung by yellowjackets I still have cankles.
I know I was tested as not allergic, but I'm gonna pop some Benadryl even though it knocks me out.

If this happened during a long race I'd be so stunned from a whack of benadryl I'd probably have to DNF.

Monday Sep 6, 2010 #

Cycling (Commute) 50:00 [2]

Easy commute with Bulletdog.

Had to go in to work for some dental records related to a police investigation (can't put details on AP right now). Bulletdog and I ran into a yellowjacket nest so I now have massive calves for once in my life, and I dropped my cell phone on the way back, so I wasn't the most cheerful.

Luckily someone found the phone and called me on it. Despite their navigational difficulties in describing where they left it, I got it back, and my legs are itchy and red but returning to normal so things are looking up.

Sunday Sep 5, 2010 #

10 AM

Cycling 1:50:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @2) + (50:00 @3) 16.15 km (8.8 kph) +162m

Out with Bulletdog for a Tour de Palgrave East- We did all the singletrack and most of the doubletrack at pooch-pace, with 3 swims for the pooch on a nice cool day.

Trail conditions are perfect!

Saturday Sep 4, 2010 #

Note

Woo hoo, got a date for my knee surgery on Sept 24th thanks to a cancellation!
Good thing, it's still bugging me after last weekend.

Strength (Home Gym+) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 including some sets of 8 chin-ups (Is that all I can do now?) and some extra wobble-board pushups.
Also leg strength.

Thursday Sep 2, 2010 #

7 AM

Cycling 25:27 [2] 4.03 km (9.5 kph) +21m

Commute with bulletdog.
Note- got a nice used Garmin on eBay, as you can see.
5 PM

Cycling 27:35 [2] 3.93 km (8.5 kph) +53m

Wednesday Sep 1, 2010 #

Strength (Home Gym) 30:00 [2]

Part of workout #2, but had to cut it short to go bring T-dog back home from her overnight stay at the vet. She seems to be doing a little better.
