Hiking (Pole walking) 3:40:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Montrail GTX

Hike out of Phantom Ranch with Bash. The knee held out OK.
Details to follow.

Sunday Nov 29, 2009 #

Hiking (Pole walking) 2:45:00 intensity: (2:30:00 @1) + (15:00 @3)
(injured) shoes: Montrail GTX

Hike down the Grand Canyon via South Kaibab. See Bash's log for details and pics.

Basically started out in heavy snow and no visibility, moved down into rain and great views, then into sun and spectacular. Knee wasn't too bad, even when I had to motor back up a bit to look for my glasses.

Bill made it down OK on Wyatt the mule, and we waited up for him at the river, then went to Phantom Ranch together.

Strength 1:10:00 [3]

Extra-hard workout #2. New max on cable press, (13.5) and I'm now pulling the entire weight stack on 1-hand pulldowns for 6 reps. I added wrist weights to my dumbells for concentration curls- maybe I need heavier ones?
Also a few sets of 30 pushups on balance board, and some calf lifts and wall squats.

Paddlng (Trainer) 15:00 [2]

Warmup on the paddle trainer.

Orienteering (Pole walking) 55:00 [1]
(injured)

Hike to work with some detours to check out alternate routes for the contours-only training session, in the pouring rain.

Here's a question- for a contours-only session, I want to direct folks around a couple of dark-green areas. Would you rather see
1- a secondary CP (eg 3A after 3) to guide you in the right way,
2- a marked route for a small section
3- a few trails marked on the map?

Hiking (Commute) 45:00 [1]
(injured)

Hike home with poles in the dark and fog. Crossing Duffy's I saw a truck slow down, then drive parallel to me for a minute before flashing a strong flashlight back at me. I was tempted to turn the Fenix to 250 lumen and blind them, but fortunately resisted as it was an OPP officer on patrol, who called out to me. When he saw I was a mere dog-walker off he went, but not after I thanked him for keeping an eye out for motorized vehicles etc. Wish I'd had time to mention hunters.

Home to crab legs and LD cookies (Thanks LD50!) and Crash brownies while the keen athletes were out bounding in the yard, doing push-ups in deer poop in the dark.

Note

The Ice Queen declares no biking to work yet on my recovering knee- Grand Canyon's next weekend.

Sunday Nov 22, 2009 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:10:00 [2]

Workout #1 + core & a bit of leg strength. Again at previous max on most exercises.

Orienteering (Pole walking) 1:00:00 [1]
(injured)

Finished up the training exercise, and re-did the first part with newbie Raf to see if he could do it contours-only. Yep.

Cycling 49:00 [1]
(injured)

First ride outdoors in ages. An easy spin on the flat rail trail with Bash.
I can feel the knee, but it's not bad at this level.

Orienteering (Pole walking) 1:30:00 [1]

Out for some course setting for the CN training session Dec 13.
It's going to be contours-only, but I need to check that it doesn't involve nasty burs or dark green. Good outing with Bulletdog.

Cycling (trainer) 25:00 [1]
(injured)

Leanimal gave me the OK for some light biking, so naturally this is the first wet day in 3 weeks. I watched the final stages of the 07 Giro on the trainer.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:20:00 [2]

Extra-hard workout #2. Some additional pushups on balance board and core work too.

Wednesday Nov 18, 2009 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:10:00 [2]

Workout 2 + extra shoulders and core. One good thing about my knee being kaput- I'm getting close to my old max on the weights in this workout.

Hiking (Pole walking) 45:00 [1]
(injured)

Woo-hoo, my first commute in ages. Great day, so I walked to work with 2 trekking poles. Uphill's fine with poles, but descending's a bit touchy. See how it feels later today.

Monday Nov 16, 2009 #

Cycling (Trainer +) 20:00 [2]
(injured)

Piddly little spin with low resistance, but I added dumbell curls, press and extensions at the same time to get a bit of a workout. The recumbent's good for that.

Knee's still puffy.

Strength (Home Gym) 40:00 [3]

The remainder of workout #1 I didn't get in the AM.

Saturday Nov 14, 2009 #

Hiking (Pole walking) 20:00 [0]
(injured)

Woo-hoo, my first outing on my leg since RTH last Sunday.
I managed to keep up to T-dog while hobbling along on 2 ski poles.

Basically all I can do right now. Knee's visibly swollen too.

Friday Nov 13, 2009 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:15:00 [2]

Workout #3 + extra core & shoulder work.

Cycling 10:00 [0]
(injured)

Very easy spin on the trainer to see how the knee responds.
It felt OK after. Maybe I'll try to walk a couple of km with trekking poles tomorrow. Wow.

Seriously, at this point walking would be a big step up from the couch-warming I've been doing all week. I think I've really done it to the knee this time.

Thursday Nov 12, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

Sigh- another perfect day for a run or bike and I'm driving to work.
I didn't have the heart to bring one of the dogs as they're not getting any walks or runs at all with me. They'll have a lot more fun with Bash.

Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:15:00 [2]
(injured)

Workout 2 plus a fair bit of core and extra dumbell stuff.

My knee's about 40% better- limping a lot less when I walk.

Monday Nov 9, 2009 #

Note
(injured)

The same Right Knee's quite stiff and fairly sore. Limping piteously.
4 days off before RTH wasn't enough for whatever's wrong. Time for more driving to work :(

Sunday Nov 8, 2009 #

Orienteering race 5:00:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks CP4 Yellow

RTH

Orienteering 50:00 [4]
shoes: Brooks CP4 Yellow

RTH- matrices, relay.

Saturday Nov 7, 2009 #

Note

Woo-hoo! My custom designed all-carbon recumbent seat and rack showed up, and I spent a pleasant few hours fiddling around in the garage.
This totally custom design fits perfectly, and I did it all by e-mail and one cardboard template mailed.

Cycling 45:00 [2]
(injured)

Easy ride with Bash to the Palgrave fair-trade gift fair, via Caron and Barrie's new place. Very gentle on the hills in low gears- I could still feel my knee a bit there.

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

Strength (Home gym) 53:00 [2]

Workout #1. Short on time so I did supersets.

Thursday Nov 5, 2009 #

Strength (Core) 21:00 [2]

Caron's Hard Core class

Yoga 50:00 [1]
(injured)

Good class, but I had to skip anything with my right leg fully bent (Child's pose, flying pigeon, anything with a squat).

Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 plus some extra dumbell work.

Note- T of D worked on the knee- no running to work today.

Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 #

Running (Commute) 55:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon XT Wings

Easy commute- right knee's still wonky.

Off to see Thumbs-of-Death tomorrow instead of my long run. Judging by the timing, it might have been too much Pigeon pose at Yoga that hurt my knee, or the fairly easy run the next day.

Wildlife watch- 3 deer, same coon twice and a Norther Goshawk all within 15M.

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

Running (Commute) 25:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon XT Wings

Nice quick run to work.

The legs feel fast, but my knee's been funny since Friday's run- something funny in the medial side. I was hoping a couple of days "off" would help. Maybe time for Thumbs-of-death.

Running (Commute) 28:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon XT Wings

Slower run home in the dark and pouring rain.

Sunday Nov 1, 2009 #

Running intervals 30:00 [3]

Yep, I'm going to log sprinting after bulletdog and her stick around the back yard with 3 year old T-girl on my shoulders, not to mention racing Bash around the zoo. Serious way to cover ground with a 3 year old.

I think Bash had more pre-event jitters here than an expedition race but a fine time was had by all.

Check out that kid-running technique- leaning forward from the ankles, no slouching at the waist, hips driving forward.
