Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #1

Running 1:55:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

3 separate trots with Bash. The planned long run got cut off by threatening weather but we did some small ones later.

Running (commute+) 40:00 [2]

Run to work, with another session of slash-the-nettles/thistles/chest-high weeds. I got about 100M finished off on the blue trail, and hope to get another section this afternoon. Hard work, but probably good for the core.

Running (commute) 30:00 [3]

Big threatening clouds in the distance made for a quick run home before it opened up. I would have made it, but the last bit of my commute has been logged, and it was dark green territory. Confused the heck out of the Bulletdog. It'll be a nasty bikewhack.

Cycling (trainer) 35:00 [2]

Getting in the mood for the TDF by riding whlie Lance and the boys went over the Pyrinees at Ax 3.

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [3]

Workout #3. It's been a while what with all the racing and other stuff.

Running warm up/down (commute+) 25:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Run to and from my speed intervals.

Running intervals (commute+) 32:00 [4]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Speed intervals, 10' on 5 off.

Running (commute) 40:00 [1]

Easy jog/hike at the T-dog's pace. (She does intervals of jogging and snuffling)

Cycling (trainer) 35:00 [3]

Getting in the mood for the TDF riding the old 'Bent on the trainer, while I await parts for my front hub on my new bike. Right now it's not only 'Bent but wobbly as well.

Running (commute) 28:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Easy trot to work

Running (Commute + Trail Work) 50:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Some major work on the run home slashing through some thick nettles and thistles.

Strength (Core) 35:00 [2]

Hard Core Monday.

Peculiar stabbing pain in the medial part of my heel when stretching out my leg with the foot flexed (Toe tipped in towards the knee.) Doesn't bother me otherwise.

Cycling race 2:09:00 [5]

Lap 2 at 3AM and 3 at 10:40AM. I was reasonably pleased with my lap in the dark, given what I ride. The last lap I was on track to finally break an hour, but instead I broke my front hub, which allowed the wheel to wobble about 3cm side to side, rubbing on metal and brakes. Oh well, still a good lap for me. Less climbing on the course this year, which is a spot I usually pass people.

Our team did OK, given that we were plagued with mechanical issues. Knobless broke a derailleur one lap and destroyed a chain in the second, and the Big Guy broke his chain twice in the first lap.

Cycling warm up/down 45:00 [1]

Saturday Jun 24, 2006 #

Cycling race (MTB) 1:04:00 [5]

First lap at 24hr summer solstice. Not all our riders will do night, so I started at 8:40 or so, with lights on by 9 in the forest. Small technical where my handlebars went free-range in the singletrack, otherwise handled the dry dusty conditions OK.

Cycling warm up/down 20:00 [1]

Hard to warm up then wait 30 minutes at the start in cool conditions. (My teammate broke a derailleur)

Running (commute) 26:00 [3]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Supposed to be an easy recovery week this week. Good thing, as we're too busy to train much.

This was supposed to lead up to our season's peak in 4 weeks at the RTN with The Padre and Gazelle, but I just heard it's been cancelled. :(

Adventure racing in Canada's going down the tubes.

Cycling (MTB) 1:27:00 [3]

Did a pre-ride of the 24hr course in Albion with Bash.
It's dry and dusty. I got over-exuberant on a fast loose turn and slid out on my butt, giving my knee a good thump and Bash a good scare.

Course is flatter than usual, and my riding time on the actual course was just over an hour.

Cycling 30:00 [2]

Now this was cool! A friend of ours is in town and we traded 'bents. He has a Greenspeed Trike, which is so recumbent my bike towers above it. The thing handles like an F1 racer, zipping from side to side. It's so low it would be death to ride on roads, and the wheels are tiny so it needs pretty smooth pavement, but the thing was a blast to ride on a paved bike path!

(rest day)

Actually feel great after the SAC but it's a busy week so no time to bike today.

Salomon Adventure Challenge Long Course - Frontenac

Adventure Racing race 12:10:00 [2]

SAC Long course with Bash and Hingo.
Went from a pretty good trek at 4AM in the pouring rain and thunder, to a reasonable bike ride, to a really great longer trek where we moved up to 2nd place overall.
Next we had a fairly decent paddle, but from there we had navigation issues on the Advanced Trek (See Bash's log) . Also medical issues due to heat and I wondered if we'd have to withdraw, but the only way to stop Hingo would be to shoot him, so we kept cooling him and feeding him salt and biked slowly home the last 30km. Oh well, highs and lows. Some fantastic scenery on treks and biking, and the paddling was nice too.

Finished 6th co-ed, probably 10 or 11 overall. My new recumbent's podium streak ends at 5. Still great to be racing with original tree huggers for the first AR this season. I finally get to race with Bash again, and as usual watched her get stronger as the hours ticked by.

Cycling (MTB) 2:30:00 [3]

To Albion with Bash, Crash, LeAnimal and Knobless.

What a perfect day for a great ride with neighbours before work! Conditons perfecto.

Tuesday Jun 13, 2006 #

Cycling (commute) 51:00 [2]

Easy ride in and back with the wayward Bulletdog. Still a bit tired from the Rogaine, and need to start tapering for the SAC Long course this weekend, so today and tomorrow are it for biking.

Orienteering race (Rogaine) 10:00:00 [1]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

Day 2 of then NARC. 3Pin and I had a really good start to the night, hitting some very difficult controls well in the dark.
Unfortunately the wheels fell off the bus when we tried to find a "Vegetation Boundary" in the dark, and came at it from 2 totally different bearings. Wasted a couple of hours with no luck.
We then had a 5 min nap and a road hike 'til the sun came up, (Had planned a run) but were still navigating like zombies, and wasted a couple of hours and a huge climb on another missed control. Very frustrating. Jamie was finally able to take a tow so we ran 5km of road to the next section and burned off the frustration.
After that things worked better, and we picked up a fair bit of what was left in our plan.
Ended up with 1470 points, 7th Masters.
Lots of Ontario teams present!

Orienteering race (Rogaine) 13:00:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Hardrock

N. American Rogaine Champs, Allegany Park. Hilly!
I did this with 3Pin. We set a course based on a fair bit of running, inlcuding a long road run at night. Started out OK, but got well turned around when we ran into Mick's team and lost focus briefly. After that we did our first road run, but 3Pin blew out his ITB. It would take a gun to make him quit, so we just walked along slowly after that.
We decided that if we can't go fast we'd better not make more errors, so we did a lot of pace counting and precison bearings, and thing went pretty well this day, if slower than we'd planned.

Orienteering 53:00 [2]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Tapering for the Rogaine.

An easy jog of the Palgrave training course put up by Bash.
I know the trails so-o-o well here that I tried to run point-to-point as much as possible, (Some line-o?) even recreating a swampy bushwhack that Bash did in ESAR out of curiosity.
Bit on the buggy side, but a nice course.

Cycling (MTB) 2:40:00 [2]

Nice bike to and around Albion and back with Bash (For the first bit) and The Gazelle. The trails were in great shape, and we rode it all. The Sugar Shack Shuffle's pretty technical.

Sadly, the only part that was soggy was the new bit of trail we sweated buckets to build. Digging down to the clay may not be the answer, or maybe it needs to dry out further and frim up with use.

Running (commute) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Ecco Receptor

Easy jog/hike home with the T-dog by headlamp.

Tuesday Jun 6, 2006 #

Running 50:00 [2]

Run to and from work.

Monday Jun 5, 2006 #

Cycling (commute) 55:00 [2]

Easy commute with the Bulletdog.

Strength (Core) 40:00 [2]

Hard Core Monday. The core feels it a bit from all the trail work.

Sunday Jun 4, 2006 #

Misc (Trail Work) 2:30:00 [2]

More IMBA trail building. Today we were benching the trail- cutting down to the mineral soil and sloping it. Basically 5 hours of hard labour, and after a day and a half with 20 people, we have about 400M done. One crew of 4 spent the whole time rock-armouring a 3M section, and another was trying to make a log ride. At least it was nowhere near as mucky as yesterday.

Cycling (MTB) 1:10:00 [3]

After all that work there was supposed to be a group ride but most people seemed too tired, so I got to be the first to ride the new bit of trail. It's still incomplete, but the bit we got done is very nice with good flow.

Saturday Jun 3, 2006 #

Running 2:35:00 [3]

Run to the Dingle with Bulletdog, K/O, Luscious, Boston Rob and the gang. Rob and I continued on to K2 at a decent pace. I did an extra lap after to get some more time on feet.

Misc (Trail Work) 2:00:00 [1]

Went to the IMBA trail-building course at Albion Hills.
Learned some interesting stuff, then out into the rain and muck with the tools. We re-routed the first bit of singletrack in Albion. The first pass flags the trail, the second removes sensitive species like wild leeks and Jack in the Pulpit plants, then the clearing begins. The removed plants are transplanted carefully into the old trail after breaking it up, and then branches and leaf mulch is raked back on. I couldn't recognize trails I've ridden for 5 years!
4 hours of work, but counted half.

Friday Jun 2, 2006 #

Strength (Home Gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3

Running 50:00 [1]

Easy jog-hike with the 2 dogs for some prime pooch swimming on a warm day.

Cycling (Trainer) 35:00 [2]

Cool bike in the basement. I get my new bike back Sunday.

Thursday Jun 1, 2006 #

Running (commute+) 30:00 [3]

Trot in with the Bulletdog.

Running tempo (Commute) 20:00 [4]

Short of time so I booted it straight home. Had a PB even with the net uphill run home and a heavy pack. Didn't have my HRM so it may have been a 4 or 5.

Running warm up/down 8:00 [1]

Cooldown after a hard run.
