Strength (Lumberjack) 1:00:00 [2]

Beautiful crisp morning out, -20, calm and sunny- perfect weather to go to town on some of the massive logs from the big tree. Even the monster logs couldn't resist a splitter maul and sledge hammer.

Also did some foot and kneehab, and a deep-snow slog with the dogs. (Not logged)

Thursday Feb 27, 2014 #

Running 27:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Another crisp run in without dogs. Wind picked up in the PM so I got a ride home.

Strength (Core) 20:00 [2]

Caron's core class.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Lots of twisting in this one.

Wednesday Feb 26, 2014 #

Strength 1:00:00 [3]

Foothab, kneehab and a solid Link workout.

Snowshoeing 45:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (30:00 @4)

First lap with Bulletdog, then a hard stomp over hill and dale, including 2X Mt Tobler North Face. Great workout pounding through breakable crust into knee-deep snow.

Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Good solid run to work with extras via Switchbacks. Mostly hard-packed trails, some lumpy trail-breaking. -15 with strong wind-chill- Too cold for the hounds. Brisk night run home- some more trail breaking where it blew in.

Knee has been a bit sore since the weekend.

Tuesday Feb 25, 2014 #

Running 1:10:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Packed enough for Snowcross now- Bazingadog and I had a decent run, picking up a load of wood on the return trip. Smooth running in spots, frozen post-hole obstacle course in others.

Monday Feb 24, 2014 #

Snowshoeing 1:15:00 [3]

Run in with the big guy and back via switchbacks. I needed snowshoes for the breakable crust on the first 1km but after that snowcross would have worked. I re-ran one deep section on the golf course 3x to pack it down.

Sunday Feb 23, 2014 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Sheldon Persad's running Mini-day.
Balance, agility, plyometrics and strength.
11 AM

Orienteering 43:02 [4] 6.48 km (6:38 / km) +149m 5:57 / km
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

O cup Earl Bales.
I grew up nearby, and often ran these trails. Familiarity breeds massive errors... as does lack of nav practice.

Poor plan, poorly executed. I didn't notice the 1:7500 scale, and made many other basic errors, including an "Oh, I know where that is" that had me run 500m off the map to the wrong rock and back. I would have been faster walking many sections, as I kept leapfrogging others who were. Also wish in the second box that I'd dropped controls up top in the open as the lower controls were on well packed trails.

About 1600m of errors on a fairly short course I should know well, one of my worse o-cups.

Oh well, nice to have a good new map now to practice on near my Mom's house.

Saturday Feb 22, 2014 #

Paddlng (Erg) 20:00 [2]

12 PM

Running 1:02:36 [3] 9.46 km (6:37 / km) +94m 6:18 / km
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Howling winds so no forest today.
Ran some local subdivision streets with Bazingadog. Ugh.

Friday Feb 21, 2014 #

Strength 1:10:00 [2]

Foul out, so no skiing or running.
Workout 3 + lots of KBs and some extra core, + foot/kneehab while watching the hockey game.

Wednesday Feb 19, 2014 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, workout 2 + some kbs.

XC Skiing 35:00 [2]

Slow commute in the soft and soggy snow. Good thing I keep some glide liquid at work.

Bulletdog was a little trooper, tromping through the soft snow.

XC Skiing 35:00 [1]

Easy commute home. Snow hardened up a bit, so tracks were crackly where they weren't trampled.

Tuesday Feb 18, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [2]

Fairly quiet commute to work, but we raised the Degree of Difficulty for the way home via the Rollercoaster. BZdog saw something in the conservation area, so he was on top form. My skiing resembled a poor Aerials landing when he took a turn on a steep hill while I went straight, hauling me into deep powder and plantais les visage.

Did some extra in Palgrave West while the light held out and the forecast rain held off.

Feeling better while on skis, but my sinuses are pounding if I try and run a step. Great sympathy for my patients who get toothaches in their upper teeth that are sinus-related.

Monday Feb 17, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:40:00 [2]

Feeling a bit better.

Great ski with Bash on yet another perfect bluebird day. Some bushwhacking in terrain we usually can't ski, some tracks in Charlevoix, awesome powder.

Next Bulletdog and I skied the sled up to Lookout hill and hauled a load the size of a full 4-man bobsled down to the bottom. We dropped off about 2/3 at the base, hauled up the drifted slope and the Canada 1 sled got some good speed on the final hill but took a rollover at the tough #3 turn.

Strength (Lumberjack) 30:00 [2]

Split the loads I hauled yesterday and today, and decided to lay into the massive logs from the big pine tree- at least the few I could get at under the snow and ice. The big maul wasn't enough, so I needed the sledgehammer as well but they split OK in the cold morning temps.

Also foot and kneehab.

Note

Bazingadog was going crazy when he saw some early morning deer through the window. When I took him out he managed to slip the leash (operator error) and blazed off after them, with me plodding and cursing after in over-the-Sorell -boot snow. Much to my shock and relief he came bounding up to me after only 2-3 minutes, and went on leash voluntarily. Maybe a hint of light at the end of the tunnel?

Snowshoeing 2:10:00 [2]
(sick)

Feeling a little better, so Bash and I took Bazingadog for a tromp through Glen Haffy through every possible hill and dale, mostly breaking through snow that was chest-deep on the lad. He had to leap like an antelope up the steep hills while pulling me, which eventually tired him out enough that he was looking hard for broken trails.
Mocha and I got the rest of the firewood after.

Great to be out again! Gorgeous day- no wind, perfect powder everywhere.

Saturday Feb 15, 2014 #

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [1]
(sick)

Bah, too sick to take advantage of the perfect conditions, so I took Bazingadog to the off-leash property to race around with Rapper through chest-deep snow, then took Bulletdog to haul a load of wood from the summit. We dropped off most of it at the base of the uphill so it wasn't a huge load to haul up.
Also foot and kneehab.

Friday Feb 14, 2014 #

Note
(sick)

Sniff, snort, sneeze- happy Valentine's day.

Thursday Feb 13, 2014 #

XC Skiing 30:00 [3]

Ugh- coming down with a cold.
Still a nice ski in with Bazingadog. He scooted along well, even with his embarrassing boots on at -20c.

XC Skiing 30:00 [2]
(sick)

Definitely sick.
Bazingadog laid down some great intervals while I hung on in a full tuck. Some of the turns at speed were a challenge. Funny, mostly he just trots along and I have to work, but certain slight dowhill spots he feels have a virtual timer.

Wednesday Feb 12, 2014 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, workout 1.

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Fantastic bluebird day! Broke trail by myself in the Charlevoix loop, then back to pick up Bulletdog for the commute. She's also been watching Olympics, and was trying for a season PB at a nice solid gallop.

XC Skiing 35:00 [2]

Leisurely ski home with scratch-and-sniff dog.

Tuesday Feb 11, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [3]

Another great commute with the big guy. At one time he tried to improve on yesterday's run with another record-setting sprint, thanks to Coach Venison-on-the-hoof.

Monday Feb 10, 2014 #

XC Skiing 30:00 [2]

Sluggish this morning. Nice to be on the back end of the tow rope behind Bazingadog, at least for the bit he chose to haul.

XC Skiing 30:00 [3]

Back home as the sun set. Bazingadog is watching too much Olympic a coverage- he treated 1km of slight downhill as a luge run. I think he could hear the cowbells and cheers in his head as he went flat-out just for the fun of it.

Adventure Racing race (Stars WAR) 3:00:16 [4] 23.18 km (7:47 / km) +346m 7:14 / km

Great to race this one with Bash.
As always, complex and well thought-out course with many options and no obvious route. You could start on the ski-o map or the snowshoe-o, and there were certain controls that had a bonus if you did them sequentially. You could get any controls at any time via ski or snowshoe, but one section was on the ski trails, while some were deeper in the bush. You couldn't snowshoe on ski trails, and some ski trails were 1-way only.

Bash and I chose to mainly ski but carry our snowshoes in our packs, and drop the skis at a far point. Great winter conditions, and some good track skiing.
Also had to break some trail where it was over my knees- that was level 5 skiing.
I'd glide-waxed Bash's waxless skis with some great Hi-Fluoro Molybdenum wax we got at Silverstar, and she definitely had better glide than my waxable skis.
We were able to ski to some of the snowshoe controls, but changed over for a couple, then back. Made it in 16 seconds late.

Due to one spot where we didn't see the SI and manually punched our results were a little complicated but when they were adjusted after the awards it turns out we were first Masters with 670 points. Kudos to BobJack, who got over 1000 points, winning overall by a solid margin.

This felt like a real winter race, with cold conditions, deep fluffy powder and some tough trail-breaking. Thanks to the Stars for putting on a great event.

Saturday Feb 8, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:05:00 [2]

Off to the office with Bazingadog and back via the Rollercoaster for a change. So gorgeous out- I'd stay out for hours if i wasn't tapering.

Strength 30:00 [2]

Some log-hauling and spitting, and foot/kneehab.
Much easier hauling with less fresh pow and a de-iced toboggan.

Friday Feb 7, 2014 #

Snowshoeing 1:32:00 [2]

Out with Bash and Manisa behind their place for a great bushwhack snowshoe hike- perfect powder snow, sunshine and -12. We climbed every peak we could find.

XC Skiing (Telemarking) 1:00:00 [3]

Dusted off the old-school Tele gear for an expedition to the back bowls of our back yard. My stuff really belongs on the wall of a ski lodge, or in a museum- heavy double-leather boots, first generation fat skis with Riva cable bindings and Voile release plates.

The steep and deep is pretty windblown, crud and hardpack, and I couldn't get my turns linked up well.

All the best powder was on the somewhat more gentle slopes, and I got some nice smooth runs there.

Floundering around on the up-track without skins or grip wax- I bare-booted it up the steepest stuff.

Thursday Feb 6, 2014 #

XC Skiing 40:00 [2]

-19c, but the valiant little Bulletdog sported her boots and coat for a frisky ski in to work.

XC Skiing 40:00 [1]

Easy commute home with Bulletdog setting the pace.

Wednesday Feb 5, 2014 #

Strength 30:00 [1]

Foothab, kneehab, some running drills and a few cable press and pull-ups.

Snowshoeing 1:00:00 [4]

Dogless outing with poles. Wow, it's so deep out there I was up to my knees with the snowshoes on. Maybe I need old-school wooden ones?
Had a good hard outing climbing everything I could find. I love winter!!!!

Also hauled a load of wood, but had to ditch half of it when I could barely budge.
With a half load it was still level 5 hauling up the hill even with poles. I even had to haul down the hills.

XC Skiing 35:00 [3]

Ski to work in champagne powder heaven with the big guy before his 8 hour nap.

XC Skiing 33:00 [2]

Crisp night ski home with a less bounding beast. Tracks in Palgrave East are obliterated already, but Palgrave west is excellent. Thanks Bash.

Tuesday Feb 4, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:00:00 [2]

Another great ski in, but no extras as the pooch seems to be getting tired.

Monday Feb 3, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:10:00 [3]

Out to work with the big guy. On the way back the ski tracks were utterly obliterated, but it looks like the conservation staff were out with chainsaws so I can't complain. Snow is still perfect!

Sunday Feb 2, 2014 #

XC Skiing 1:30:00 [3]

Out for a fast blast with Bazingadog then another tour of Winter Wonderland with Bash. Ski conditions are amazing- knee deep fluffy powder. Even the bushwhacking is smooth skiing.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Balance, agility, drills and strength with Sheldon Persad's mini day.

Forgot my minimalist shoes (ran in the snow to clean them, then left them drying by the fire) so bought myself a pair of Hoka Mafate 3s 1/2 size larger next door at Running Free, which I needed anyway.

Saturday Feb 1, 2014 #

XC Skiing 2:00:00 [3]

Off to work with Bazingadog to meet contractors, and back via the scenic route. We met some MTB riders with a GoPro, and they were quite amused as the big guy insisted on chasing them, easily hauling me faster than they could ride. At the end they pointed out that "3 of us are getting a really solid workout" as I just coasted along. Somewhere there is video of BZdog in all his high speed glory.

There were one or two more hammer-fest spots where he found deer tracks but he mainly trotted along calmly. He's toast right now.

Strength 1:00:00 [3]

Some foothab, kneehab and a bit of workout 2, followed by a snowshoe trip out back to haul a massive load of logs in. It was hard work just to haul downhill, and I had to cache half of them and drag the rest at level 5 up the hill near our property hauling on nearby trees or crawling on hands and knees at times. Turns out the biggest one is un- splittable due to knots, but got the rest split and stacked.

Love this winter!!
