XC Skiing 35:00 [4]

Hmm- late for work due to deep snow and slow skis- nice problem to have. I had to put the hammer down to break trail to work and not be even later.

Snowshoeing 1:30:00 [2]

Out for a night tour of Albion with Bash, Hingo and CS. Probably not the best taper for Snowgaine, but a great outing.

Wednesday Feb 27, 2013 #

Strength 45:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, part of workout #2.

Snowshoeing 50:00 [3]

Solid slog in new heavy snow with both dogs. Love it!

Snowshoeing 40:00 [2]

Magical night snowshoe home. No wind, crystalline snow falling, deeply covered trees...

Even if I broke one snowshoe and had to carry it for the last km.

Tuesday Feb 26, 2013 #

Skijoring 30:00 [3]

Ski in to work with a fairly pokey Bazingadog. More help than hindrance for the first km, vice versa on the last km..

Skijoring (Commute +) 45:00 [3]

Nice ski home with the big beast. He was a good ski buddy this time, trotting along well, hauling a bit on the downhills and of course galloping on his TT on the last km. Spring skiing conditions- warm but packed, with good glide and grip.

Making the most of it- I know I'll be running in spikes soon more than I want to.

Monday Feb 25, 2013 #

XC Skiing (Commute +) 1:10:00 [2]

Good ski in with Bulletdog. Warm but decent grip and glide- what a great few weeks it's been!

Sunday Feb 24, 2013 #

XC Skiing 2:00:00 [3]

Nice ski around Albion with Bash. We broke trail on the black loop, and did some bushwhacking there, then did the red loop plus some Singletrack bushwhack. Waxless skis were pretty good- a little sticky in the bush, not the fastest downhill but good on slightly icy trails.

Snowshoeing 35:00 [2]

Over the steepest and highest hills in the hood with both beasts. BZdog was on his harness, and really hauled as we followed very fresh deer tracks.

Strength (Lumberjack) 20:00 [2]

40 min

Hauling and splitting more logs from the bush.

Saturday Feb 23, 2013 #

Skijoring 1:45:00 [3]

All over Palgrave east and west with the big guy. The first few kilometers were a rocket ride, and then he settled in. New glide wax made for quite fast ski conditions- Surprisingly good.

Snowshoeing 30:00 [3]

Off with both dogs to fetch a load of firewood from the hilltop 1km away. Hard work even with a well-sliding sled.

Friday Feb 22, 2013 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout 1 + foot/kneehab.

XC Skiing 51:00 [2]

Nice ski out the door with Bash and the bounding Bulletdog. Fresh new snow falling, ski tracks are the best they've been in years- love it.

Thursday Feb 21, 2013 #

Skijoring 30:00 [3]

-14 with hard trails and a powerful beastie made for rocket-fast sections. I still have to pay my dues on most of the commute though, when he's on sniff-and-pee duty.
Man, I love commuting by ski in this kind of weather. Favorite time of year.

Skijoring 30:00 [3]

Good fast ski home. The big boy was setting a good pace for the last 3km.

Wednesday Feb 20, 2013 #

Strength 50:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, some extra foot strength stuff, workout 3 + 2x8 pullups.

XC Skiing (Commute +) 35:00 [3]

Ski in with Mocha the Bulletdog. She was thrilled that I left her bro behind and took her.

XC Skiing 32:00 [2]

Nice crisp night for a ski home.

Tuesday Feb 19, 2013 #

XC Skiing 38:00 [3]

Slow slog in wet snow to work, with a very restrained slack-leash Bazingadog. It just turned to rain in the last few mintues. What a mess!

Skijoring 29:00 [3]

Started out like Turbo in Iceland- my stuff was still wet from the AM and it was snowing horizontally- I was really cold. Better once I got warmed up- snow was much faster, and BZ dog did some high speed runs on the gradual downhills.

Monday Feb 18, 2013 #

Snowshoeing 1:20:00 [1]

Hike with Bash and the Hounds. We did some of the biggest hills, following icebreaker tracks.

XC Skiing 1:30:00 [3]

Tour of Charlevoix trails with Bash, then off to Palgrave East- fast conditions with pretty hard snow. I did the new switchbacks, and had to jump-tele the turns.

Strength 40:00 [2]

Foot/kneehab and most of workout 2 inc sets of 11 pull-ups.

Sunday Feb 17, 2013 #

XC Skiing 1:30:00 [2]

Round 2- very nice tour of areas we rarely visit on a total bluebird day.
Looks like some good snowshoeing to be had too, as stuff is frozen over.
Saw odd tracks- cow! The farmer's cattle apparently went walkabout.

Snowshoeing 52:00 [2]

Round 3- up hill and dale with the hounds. We checked out a control I dropped yesterday too. BZdog was a lot better, until we got on the track from the control, when he started tracking fiercely. Turns out 2 large deer were using the trails from the Icebreaker.
11 AM

Skijoring 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km) +105m 4:58 / km

Fail. Dogs were going nuts with all of us out there, and wrestling with harness tied to skier with poles on icy snow- not good.

Eventually BZdog and I got out in front, but Mocha was distracting him by chasing Bash, so I turned them around and headed home.
Top speed- 2:30/km.

Saturday Feb 16, 2013 #

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Run over to the race and cool-down after. Hiked back so didn't log.
2 PM

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [3] 9.0 km (6:47 / km) +257m 5:56 / km
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

O cup Palgrave.
Navigation was nice and clean but I had no gas in the tank, especially uphill.
I chose routes to minimize climb, but guys like AL who run at my pace were dropping me like an anvil.

Despite plodding along, it was a great day to be out, and a good course. I ran alone for a fair bit, but it was a pity not to be the one setting the tracks on my home turf with a handicap. Great run by Bash! I ended up 6th.

Friday Feb 15, 2013 #

Note

Figured a rest day would be good as I was feeling a little drained -har har.
Shovelled out the fire pit for the icebreaker.

Not sure how long after giving blood you should wait before a hard run. Oh well, we'll see tomorrow.

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Pretty solid run in and back with Bazingadog. He helped haul a bit, but still slow going on lumpy crust on the way in, and softening snow on the return.

Yoga 30:00 [1]

Was going in for core class, but I saw there was a blood donor clinic upstairs.
It seems I'm always training for something, have a race, or getting over a cold when they have a clinic but not right now. Good thing to do for Valentine's day, give from the heart. I hear the core class I skipped was a lot more bloodsucking than the IV.

Despite admonishments from the nurses I snuck down after for the last half of yoga and a recovery chocolate from Caron.

Wednesday Feb 13, 2013 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foot/kneehab with a couple of new exercises from Coach SP, and workout 1. No KBs.

Running 40:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Beautiful sunny winter day with 2 hounds. Might have been better with snowshoes, but I took my new Snow Cross.

Mini review:
+ They're light, have great grip on icy snow and a nice built-in gaiter
- Feel like high heels so it's hard to midfoot strike, and somehow the instep feels odd. I'm told that will wear in.

Note

My Dental School buddy Feds lives in BC. He did a vid of his 6 year old twins and 9 year old daughter skiing the double black diamond runs at Whistler, corny "Dad" dialogue and all.

Wish I could ski like them!

Running 30:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Snowcross

Easy night jog home with a somewhat tired Mocha. Snowcross were great on the crusty lumpy trails.

XC Skiing 32:00 [2]

Yesterday's wet snow has frozen, but the tracks are too narrow for my skis, so slow going. Some good tracks, some places where they've been trampled to craters (even one spot with *two* good snowshoe lanes for hikers beside the trampled ski tracks, but better than I expected)

Bazingadog was scared of the noise and ice I think, and was more hindrance than help. Maybe he's finally had enough of hauling me around.

Challenging ski in- I had to de-ski and walk a couple of spots.

Skijoring 30:00 [3]

The big guy seemed to get back on mission in places. Fast conditions, especially when Bazingadog spotted some deer. Pretty sketchy out- probably no more Skijoring unless we get more snow or it softens up.

Monday Feb 11, 2013 #

Snowshoeing 40:00 [2]

Ugh- raining on deep snow so back on the snowshoes with really tired legs.
Tried to break trail for a snowshoe track next to the ski tracks, which are looking pretty good right now.

Snowshoeing 40:00 [1]

Easy plod home in heavy wet snow over slush. Still tried to break some trail beside the ski tracks before the slush freezes.

XC Skiing warm up/down (Stars WAR) 15:00 [2]

Easy ski to the remote race start. I think Nick figured out how long he wanted to give classic skiers an advantage over skate skiers, and it was only part of the bush trail.
11 AM

XC Skiing race 1:30:00 [3]

Stars WAR (Winter adventure race) ski-o portion.

Bash and I raced together. We were both none too fresh from the previous days' outings, but conditions were fantastic- perfect bluebird day with fresh snow.

This time there were several boxes, and we could take a 3 handicap. We decided to go with waxable classic skis. The first part of the ski was ungroomed, and better on classic, but most of it was well groomed and track set. We caught Frankenjack and G-Stix skate skiing on a short section where we had to break trail, but they took off once we hit groomed trail. The skate-skiing Tarnos passed us too, with JT bravely towing behind Tarno. With the handicap system we kept running into eachother often. Bash and I didn't tow at all on skis, and Bash skied like a champ. For once, the bladder system, map board, wrist compass, layers and all the other stuff worked perfectly.
Back to HQ for a quick transition to snowshoes. G-Stix and FJ had just left, and Tarnos were still there.

1 PM

Snowshoeing 1:15:00 [4]

Good solid run, once we got the tow system sorted (must remember Bash's skin pack has no waistband). The handicap system was complex but well planned- We kept seeing FJ/G-Stix who eventually dropped us, but saw the Tarnos on and off all race. Beautiful woods for snowshoeing, but hard work breaking trail. Bash's nav was solid and she worked super-hard. We finally passed the Tarnos after a tough battle as they had to go for one last control, so we were 2nd overall.

Kudos to Nick, Funrun and all the others who made this complex event run so smoothly.
Could not have been better conditions or weather.
4 PM

Skijoring 20:00 [2]

Short jaunt to tire the hounds. Bulletdog was flying! She flew past Bazingadog just as I had him taking it easy on a tight curve, and he tossed me into a small tree, triggering the emergency release on his rope. Shockingly, he went ahead a short bit then stopped and looked over his shoulder to see why I was lagging so. He sniffed around a bit, but came back when I yelled at him. Somehow I think he didn't get that he could escape, or he'd rather ski with me.

Saturday Feb 9, 2013 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Running drills with Sheldon Persad. Some good stuff, similar to some things we saw on Reid Coolsaet's video. Now we need to get video analysis done.

Friday Feb 8, 2013 #

Skijoring 2:00:00 intensity: (1:20:00 @3) + (40:00 @4)

Snowmageddon! Even the muscle-bound hound had a hard time hauling through dense snow up to his chest. We did a first 2-dog lap, then back to pick up Bash, and a slow but fantastic slog through to the Wheelies place. I had an appt in Palgrave so I had to take off on Bash, but with the heavy trail breaking we barely made it in time- Bazingadog now lagging behind- only to find it cancelled.

Few things are a better workout than breaking trail at a solid pace when you can't even see your skis.

Had to pick up my van anyway, and drop off my rear wheel to MrBiker's house for conversion to 650b. Seems like a good time to be without a rear bike wheel.

Thursday Feb 7, 2013 #

XC Skiing 30:00 [2]

Just caught the beginning of Snowmageddon - barely enough for a scratchy ski home, but I love it and so does Bulletdog.

Wednesday Feb 6, 2013 #

Strength (Home gym) 1:00:00 [2]

Solid workout #3, but skipped the kbs to see if it helps my elbows.
Feeling great- back up to 13 on cable press and 10 pulldowns in a set. (I know, not epic but getting there.)

Also full foot/kneehab.

Running hills 43:00 intensity: (13:00 @3) + (30:00 @4)
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Solid fast run with the BZdog. He helped haul a bit, but has learned to slack on the uphills. I think I actually got him tired by the end.

Charlevoix woods (K-bash and Wheelright forest) were spectacular in winter sunshine. Enough snow to look like winter, but not to ski.

Running 26:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Crisp headlamp run home.

Tuesday Feb 5, 2013 #

Running 55:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Solid run with BZdog. Also left the sled on the trail in the AM and hauled another load back in on the way back. Just a few more cm of snow and I could ski.

Knee has been a bit dicey since skate skiing Sunday.

Also, my ice bugs are just about shot.

Monday Feb 4, 2013 #

Running (Cani-cross) 1:10:00 [2]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Decided it's too much work handling the big guy on leash and Bulletdog, so I used the Skijoring harness. Made for nice running! Took the hounds on some extra hills and Singletrack on the way home.

Strength 10:00 [1]

Foot/kneehab.

Sunday Feb 3, 2013 #

Strength (Lumberjack) 30:00 [2]

Out with the hounds heaving, sled-hauling and splitting some logs from the forest.

XC ski-Skate 1:15:00 [4]

Out chasing the LD express around Hardwood. As almost the only place with any snow due to freak squalls, it was packed with waddlers we had to dodge around like a video game.
LD is a much better skate skier, and the last time skate skiing for me was at Silverstar in November, so she put the hurt on as we detoured for the steepest possible hills- so much for my "easy" loop. Still a fast one for me, on my quick Tarnopol-skis.

XC Skiing 33:00 [2]

Easy classic loop with Bash- bit short due to time constraints and crowds, but we did find a great Singletrack trail that was empty.

Saturday Feb 2, 2013 #

Cycling intervals 1:10:00 [3]

Carmichael DVD with Bash. Power and Stomp intervals.

Running 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Round the block with Bash and Hingo. A few out-and-backs.

Friday Feb 1, 2013 #

Running tempo 1:00:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (50:00 @4)
shoes: Icebugs Gryllo Green

Solid run down to the new Confederation bridge in Palgrave and back via Charlevoix by headlamp.
Legs felt light and fast after several days off running. Ice bugs really had to dig in on some of the icy double track.
