Instead of starting with a half hour of skate skiing, 'Bent and I did some actual skating. It was our first trip to the 1.1 km Woodview Mountaintop Skating loop at the top of Blue Mountain. It's fun but not cheap at $37 for two including tax. There was occasional congestion but it could have been a lot worse on New Year's Eve. At one point, a skater stepped sideways and cut me off, forcing me to jump off the ice and run through the snow to slow down, clutching at tree branches and trying not to trip over my skate picks. But there were also some nice open stretches and pretty views.

'Bent's skates were jabbing his ankle so I abandoned my goal of 10 loops. We can skate there another time. To make sure of that, I dragged 'Bent to Canadian Tire to buy new skates in the Boxing Day sale. Next time should be less painful for him.

XC Skiing - Classic (Groomed Trail) 1:04:45 [3] 11.08 km (10.3 kph) +198m

Since it was only a 2-minute drive from the skating loop, 'Bent and I went to Scenic Caves for a ski on our way back. Conditions were slick and fast. I was wearing waxless classic skis, which rarely feel fast. It was uncrowded away from the chalet in spite of the busy parking lot. Great way to finish off 2018!

A nice social ski with Leanimal, who is visiting from France, and occasional visits on the trail from 'Bent, Phatty, Coach LD, Bob, Hermes and Hank as we all did our different things. Time includes stops to chat with various people. We adjourned to Tree Hugger ABC for an amazing Cheese Fest provided by Coach LD. Hermes brought me my very own Beaver trophy in honour of my work on Wilderness Traverse. A fun reunion!

'Bent and I only had time for a short ski at Scenic Caves so we kept skate skiing a little longer after our mandatory 30 minute prologue. It was snowing and the forest was beautiful after yesterday's rain and warm temperatures. There was a little ice but conditions were mostly good. I'm still hating the steep uphills on skate skis but flats and downhills are OK.

'Bent, BazingaDog, AdventureDog and I went up Lover's Leap (beside Switchback) and followed some Craigleith snowshoe trails. It was snowy, icy and muddy - always slippery. I guess I'll call it a run but there was a lot of climbing and there were areas of poor footing where we just hiked. The dogs had a fantastic time and met a bunch of other dogs on the escarpment climb.

XC Skiing - Skate (Groomed Trail) 32:36 [4] 5.43 km (10.0 kph) +100m
slept:7.25

'Bent and I went skiing at Scenic Caves after a family Christmas that included a little too much adventure. Mom slipped and fell most of the way down our stairs, bruising her tailbone and wrenching some muscles, which is a big deal when you're 86. Luckily, 'Bent stopped her from hitting the bottom. She improved considerably over a couple of days and decided she was OK to drive herself home (about 3 hours) today. I'd been expecting to drive her car with 'Bent following but she is independent. The key was for the "kids" to stop trying to convince her to use her iPhone to navigate and let her draw her own map by hand with highway numbers and town names. It worked just fine.

This was my "mandatory" 30 minutes of skate skiing to try to learn to like it. It's not fun yet but it's getting closer. Fluffy snow had been coming down for awhile so it wasn't the best day for skating but it was amazing to be in the woods.

XC Skiing - Classic (Groomed Trail) 1:04:41 [3] 9.37 km (8.7 kph) +161m

Then I switched to classic. It was beautiful and snowy, and I had excellent grip. Way too excellent. But that just means I got more exercise. Other than 'Bent, I ran into almost no one on the trails after getting more than 1 km from the busy chalet.

There were a lot of novices around the chalet - people on vacation who wanted to try something new. At one point, I heard laughter and animated conversation in another language from an adjacent trail. Two men in turbans were kneeling in the snow, attempting the difficult job of getting back onto their feet in long skis, and obviously finding it hilarious. It felt very Canadian.

XC Skiing - Skate 30:39 [4] 5.65 km (11.1 kph) +89m

'Bent and I are classic skiers. Rather than going to ski clubs, we prefer to make our own tracks with wider skis on ungroomed trails. But as time goes on and the climate changes, we find ourselves at ski clubs more often than not.

Most of our friends are skate skiers so it would be nice to have those skills. Attackpoint says that I've only done 20 minutes of skate skiing since 2013! We've decided that we'll try to start each visit to Scenic Caves with a 30-minute skate ski session. Maybe it will become fun eventually. Even if it doesn't, it's a great workout because we're so inefficient. Today was Day 1 and it was hard work.

XC Skiing - Classic (Groomed Trail) 52:20 [3] 8.3 km (9.5 kph) +134m

We went back out on classic skis - ahh, that's better (and slower). 'Bent tried out his new skin skis, which are really nice. I used my old racing waxless skis, which are noisy and slow by comparison. It was great to have snow when there was so much grass showing in the town below.

Mom arrived this afternoon for Christmas!

'Bent wasn't feeling well so we went for an easy family snowshoe outing on the Bruce Trail near Duntroon and headed into the Nottawasaga Lookout Provincial Nature Reserve. There were places where snowshoes helped and places where the trail was packed down. It's rocky there so the snowshoes saved our ankles in any case. It's been foggy so the trees were coated lightly with snow and ice - beautiful! We didn't see anyone and the road we crossed is unmaintained in winter so it was a great place to take BazingaDog and AdventureDog.

Caron’s Christmas yoga class with live keyboard music by professional musician (and friend) Patrick Dilkie. It’s become one of my favourite holiday traditions - a relaxing evening with friends after most of my pre-Christmas preparations are done and before family gatherings begin. It's a "donate what you want" event with all the proceeds going to a local charity; this year it was Bethell Hospice in Inglewood. Caron gave the poses Christmas names like Reindeer Pose and Gravy Boat Pose. We negated all the benefit with snacks, eggnog and an after party at Peggy and Jim Reid’s house.

Orange Snail's Pace Festivus Run - I joined the Short Course group led by Browner with Funderstorm, Kelly Legge and Anna. It was a fun, chatty run in the dark around Milton. Afterward, we returned to Orange Snail Brewers for pizza, drinks and short presentations by Storm about his events and by Adam Van Koeverden, who is seeking the Liberal nomination in Milton. We also collected money and other donations for the Halton Women's Shelter. Fun evening!

I had to go to Collingwood to meet a tradesman at Tree Hugger ABC. He was scheduled to arrive between 8 and 9 a.m., which almost always means 9:15, in my experience. I got up early to drive north and arrived at 7:58 a.m. to discover that he'd already left! He returned 90 minutes later and managed to damage the fireplace mantel, window frame and wall but otherwise his work was successful. Be grateful for the little things. And eat chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate.

Before the long drive home, I went for a snowshoe run at Scenic Caves. The snow has melted so much since we were there 10 days ago! It still looked good for skate skiing though, and the snowshoeing was just fine. The back loop (Ironman) was soft but the rest of the system was well-packed and easy to run on except for all the hills. :)

We're supposed to show our season pass before we go out on the trails but I noticed both staff members were having an animated discussion with a group of prospective customers. They were explaining the ways that downhill skiing (not available at Scenic Caves) and classic skiing are different. That would have been enough to make me feel sorry for the poor staff but it also seemed as if the tourists didn't believe they were telling the truth. And *that* is why Goose works at Highlands.

In Florida today, Gene Dykes of Pennsylvania, age 70, broke Ed Whitlock's marathon world record for the age 70-74 category by 25 seconds. Ed was 73 when he ran 2:54:48 in 2004. Two weekends ago, Gene ran a trail 50K on Saturday and a marathon on Sunday. Ed would have been impressed.

'Bent, BazingaDog, AdventureDog and I went for a family run at Glen Haffy in icy conditions. We mostly ran on trails but did some cross-country exploring where an old trail used to be. "Family" activities sometimes sound better in theory than they are in practice, and this was definitely one of those days. Unless BazingaDog is in a skijoring harness, it can be stressful running with him because he's energetic and has had too many major escapes.

'Bent tried using the "long line" with BazingaDog for half an hour, which added excitement since the line tried to trip me a bunch of times when it wasn't flinging small rocks and logs into the air. After 90 minutes, he slowed down a little and was content on a leash. (By "he", I mean both 'Bent and the dog.)

But the unexpected star of the Bad Dog show was AdventureDog, normally the most obedient, timid, trustworthy dog around. For the first time in almost 4 years with us, he took off after a deer and didn't return when we called - and called and called and called. My GPS says he was only gone for 4 minutes but it always feels much longer. It's the first time he's ever done that, and he ignored us again a few minutes later. Let's hope it's not a new trend. He has always been the perfect running dog.

Hard Core Live with Caron

I'm counting this as a win. The stupid building permit / contractor / deck project crisis took up a lot of my day again, put me way behind on other things and had me tearing my hair out and ready to scream. My natural inclination is to reward myself for surviving a bad day by eating chocolate or drinking a glass of wine. In this case, I did both of those things AND went to Core/Yoga class. It did make me feel better.

Power Yoga 50:00 [1]

C3 Yoga - After awhile, I realized that two mats to my right was Aaron Hoag, formerly of the Terranauts AR team. I did the Appalachian Extreme expedition adventure race with him years ago, attended his wedding to Kelly and sat at the same banquet table with them last month. They've just moved home after living in Australia and the U.S. for the past decade so we haven't seen each other much recently but it's still kinda crazy that I didn't recognize him for 40 minutes. Apparently, I don't look closely at strange men in fitness classes, which 'Bent should be pleased to hear. Turns out the guy on the mat behind him was another old friend who didn't recognize him either. He hasn't changed at all; he was just out of context.

Another day largely devoted to contractor issues - reading building codes and manufacturer specs, making phone calls and feeling frustrated. Turns out the issue with this project (fireplace at ABC) can be resolved more easily than expected.

The issues with our tiny, professionally built deck at home - an ongoing drama for more than a year - continue. Short version: I paid the contractor to handle the permit process. He honestly thought he had a permit for what he built but he didn’t. The Town doesn’t like it and they’re threatening fines/charges - against me as the homeowner, of course, not the contractor who screwed up.

It’s been years since I worked in structural engineering but I’ve been using my education a lot this year. Unfortunately it has mostly been to no avail since Caledon’s building department isn’t managed by engineers so I can’t really have those conversations.

This is relevant to my training log because (a) it’s been one of the huge, unexpected time sucks of 2018, and (b) it turns out I’m not inspired to train when I’m angry, worried or frustrated.

'Bent and I did the 10.8 km Egg Nog Jog today - a very rare race on pavement. The Georgetown Runners have put on this race in Terra Cotta for 35 years but this year their usual route was unavailable due to construction. They were ready to retire from event organization anyway so they made a deal to transition the race to C3, our local triathlon club. They decided to hold the race on paved roads in Albion Hills Conservation Area so we ran a couple of laps to complete the traditional 10.8 km distance. It's not called Albion *Hills* for nothing. :)

I dressed for the season. This was fairly tame compared to some of the outfits with flashing lights and brightly coloured tights. :)

'Bent also dressed for the season - but for him, it's the last night of Hanukkah. Note the dreidels tied to his waist.

Jessey The Elf won the race by more than 5 minutes. Nice running form! That's his legal name and he had surgery to make his ears pointed. He is hoping to represent Canada in triathlon at the 2020 Olympics.

Our friend Trent Dilkie got some good action shots.

'Bent had been complaining of tired legs after all the early season skiing in the past two days so it was rather shocking when he placed 1st of 26 in his age group! If he was interested in setting some running goals, he sure has a lot of talent - but he doesn't have the interest. I was happy to be 5th of 20 in my age group, which is a good result for me in a road 10.8K.

After a nice overnight visit with Goose and Coach LD at Tree Hugger ABC, 'Bent and I went for our first ski of the year at Highlands, separately at our different paces. It was all open except for the Woolner Loop, and conditions were pretty good although thinner than Scenic Caves. It all depends where the snow squalls hit so the advantage will go back and forth during the season.

I ran into Coach LD on the trails and Goose in the pro shop. I also chatted with Tarno, who is a regular, and had a very unexpected meeting with Pete O, an old friend from my engineering class who has moved to the area. I had no idea that he skis, mountain bikes, etc.

'Bent demoed a pair of skin skis and ended up ordering a pair. I got new boots in the early season sale for season pass holders.

The sky over Georgian Bay looked so dramatic that we took a detour to Princeton Shores Park on our way home. I think this will become a regular stop.

A little gravel road run at the start and finish with some Palgrave Forest trails in the middle. Other than a few vehicles kicking up big dust clouds on the road portion, I had the place to myself today.

We have a race on paved roads on Sunday - the hilly 10.8 km Egg Nog Jog. It was held in Terra Cotta for 35 years and now the Georgetown Runners are passing the torch to C3. Its usual route isn't an option due to construction so it's going to be in Albion Hills on park roads with no cars. It's been a long time since I've done a road running race. Watch for me to finish in the bottom 10%! I'm looking forward to thinking up a Christmas running outfit.

AdventureDog and I went for a sunny lunchtime run around Palgrave East and West. It's still deer hunting season for a few more weeks so we avoided the private land rather than draping ourselves in orange. This felt like an easy, low energy, metronome-like run. I don't mean it wasn't fun - just kind of lazy. I wish I could say the pace was significantly lower than the days when I try hard but the difference was barely noticeable.

We met a fat biker, a dog walker and a pair of hikers. The trails were frozen hard and, in many places, icy with a skiff of new snow on top. For several kilometres, we ran along 'Bent's and BazingaDog's bike commute route, which was pretty cool for A-Dog.

This was the first time since September that I've had a successful run on trails without taping or bracing my ankle. So that has to be worth a piece of chocolate cake for dessert. :)

Tour de Halton Forest - Browner, Scout and AdventureDog encouraged me on my longest run in awhile. I went without an ankle brace and used a healthy amount of Leukotape to keep my left foot in the correct position.

Before we started, a dog walker started a pleasant conversation as he was returning to his car. I blinked a couple of times then asked, "Doug Innes?" It was! I hadn't seen him in a few years and he hadn't recognized me either. We talked a bit more. He seems to be doing well.

Browner and I had a good catch-up as we did a nice route through Halton Forest. It was a nice mix of double and single track, and the rocks were a good test for my ankle. If I can get through a 2-hour run there, I can probably try running anywhere - if I tape up, anyway.

The dogs had a fantastic time, which only got better when we returned to Browner and Storm's place for coffee and snacks, which allowed Contour and AdventureDog to play too.

[I turned off my Ambit for 2 km and 13 mins so I've used Browner's info.]

Strength & Mobility (Lumberjack - Xmas Tree) 20:00 intensity: (6:00 @2) + (7:00 @4) + (7:00 @5)

I'd hoped to buy a Christmas tree at Albion Orchards on my way home. My friend Scott Lunau owns the farm, and we've talked daily for the past 3 days about his problems getting his order of pre-cut trees delivered before the weekend. When I arrived, there was a crowd of eager families and a fairly small pile of trees. He caught my eye and said sadly, "They shorted me. Look - there are hardly any."

He also grows trees so I took pity on him and decided to take a saw, head out to the back field and cut down a Christmas tree for the first time in my life. Naturally, I chose a fairly large tree that was near the back of the field. It took me awhile to cut it down as I lay in the mud in my (formerly) clean down jacket. Then I had to carry the heavy tree back, scrambling up and down hills and getting sap all over myself. It was awesome.

At home, I carried it into the back yard, levelled off the bottom, trimmed a bunch of branches, heaved it into the stand, and added half a dozen strings of lights. All this Christmas lumberjack (lumberjill?) work made our 2-hour run seem easy!

Tomorrow we celebrate Hanukkah with 'Bent's family. It will not be loggable on Attackpoint.
