Wow, almost a regular number of hours of sleep and my alarm was set for the very reasonable time of 6:30 a.m. with a 7:10 arrival at Race HQ! I hope to write up more on this experience but in the meantime, see the comment thread from yesterday.

Also, I think the video crew did an absolutely fantastic job of presenting the race - and the sport - to the world.

Untamed New England Race HQ

Tuesday Jul 24, 2018 #

Cruelly, my tired body refused to sleep last night because of the coffee I had to drink to stay alert while I drove yesterday. I am soooo tired.

Busy, busy day checking in all the teams at Untamed New England and getting the trackers ready for prime time. That is always stressful until we get all the teams tracking. I'll be at Race HQ at 5:30 a.m. to keep an eye on that, which will probably involve a few panicked emails to Yellowbrick HQ in he U.K.

I'm the only volunteer left in Durham, NH tonight. Everyone else is at Sunday River Ski Resort in Maine with the racers. That meant I was able to take a couple of hours off for a lobster roll dinner and some wading in the Atlantic. :)

I'll spend much of the rest of the week inside a windowless conference room staring at screens so I'm glad I got out!

The plan was to get a really good sleep last night while 'Bent was away at RockstAR because tonight will be a short night before my long drive to Untamed New England.

However, the security alarm went off about 90 minutes after I fell asleep. "It's the bedroom hallway," said the alarm company ominously, bringing to mind every horror movie I've ever seen. I'm hoping it was a mouse because there has still been no sign of a human intruder. But I didn't know that last night so it was a lousy sleep.

See some of you soon in New Hampshire!

Yay!! Huge congratulations to 'Bent and Hammer on their overall victory at today's RockstAR adventure race!

Two Hockley Provincial Park Loops, one in each direction. It felt easy until the day warmed up - and then it didn't! I only did the Tom East Side Trail on one of my four trips through that section since the main Bruce Trail is the same distance with more elevation. Lots of podcasts got me through the run.

The Fat Dog 70 miler is three weeks from today - kinda scary.

I missed my non-meat-eating husband so much that I went to the Orangeville Rotary Ribfest for dinner. Yum.

Short, exploratory recovery run where I set a new record for trespassing per kilometre. I ran past several "No Unauthorized Entry" signs and twice ducked under red Danger tape, which apparently is the next step up from Caution tape. It was all related to a subdivision under construction so I knew there was no *real* danger, and no workers were out today. It looks like it will be a nice neighbourhood. My legs are tired from yesterday but this didn't feel impossible.

Then we went to the Collingwood beach with the Tiny family, which was a great way to spend a hot afternoon - especially the part where we ate Kawartha Dairies ice cream.

Summit 700 21K - Bob's new race at Blue Mountain. I only signed up a couple of days ago because I was thinking that I needed a longer run today with Fat Dog just 4 weeks away. But I'm glad I did S700 because it was brutally hard work!

The course felt like an adventure around Blue Mountain - so many kinds of trails and terrain with some beautiful views. I always had people around me so there was no slacking off. My legs were toast by the end! I finished 2/12 in age group, 17/45 women and set my half marathon PR. (No, I've never done a half marathon before - and I have nowhere to go but up with the next one!) Given that it's not my usual distance and I'm a sloooow runner, I was very happy with that.

It was nice to see so many friends volunteering, including Eco, Funderstorm, Greg D, Ursula, Timato and Teeny Tiny.

Sadly, this might be the only photo ever taken of me running that shows the bottom of my shoe.

Thanks for pulling together a great event for us in just two months, Bob!

Paddling (SUP) 40:00 [2]
slept:6.5

SUP paddle around the quarry with the group. Tonight's board was a bit under-inflated and slippery when wet. I didn't mind the extra challenge but a pivot turn defeated me and gave me a full dunk. Not so bad on a hot day.

Power Yoga (SUP) 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (15:00 @2)

Tonight's class was a step up from our regular SUP yoga because Marketa was making a documentary about Bob Knuckey, the retired teacher who hopes to become an Ironman World Champion in the 70-74 age group at Kona this year. He was on the board next to mine and we did a couple of tough balance poses with a drone hovering a few meters in front of us. Glad I didn't fall in again!

Leading up to the Fat Dog 70 miler with inadequate training, I'd hoped to fit in a shorter ultra race as a test to see whether FD is worth attempting. That didn't work with my schedule so as an alternative, I planned a double Hockley Loop today, one in each direction - almost 50K with lots of climb for southern Ontario.

Browner joined me for the 1st loop while Storm and 'Bent did a Hockley-Loop-On-Steroids with some added hill climbing. Before last week, we probably would have called this a hot day but it was under 30C, which feels manageable now. We'd set up a mid-loop aid station at 5th Line so we could have a Coke and chips break. The time went by quickly with good company.

I was on my own for the 2nd loop so I listened to podcasts. My favourite today was Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell (thanks for the tip last year, JayXC!) I stayed well hydrated all day and felt great. I took in more calories for the 2nd loop. My heels were sore by the time I finished, which wasn't good. My right knee - the one that hit the ground in yesterday's bike crash - felt a bit strained when I climbed steps but otherwise felt OK. As soon as I stopped moving though, it got stiff. I'll know more over the next day or two.

Laps were about 3:53 and 4:02, not counting longer stops including relaxed aid stations because it wasn't really a race. :)

Note

Our neighbour got a short video of the bear 'Bent saw yesterday. He/she looks young and seems to have a healthy fear of humans. Apparently, he's made multiple visits to a neighbour who keeps their garbage outside. Our compost (safely inside our garage) has smelled really ripe this week after the green bin was put out for pickup one day during the heat wave. Maybe that's why the bear dropped by our place for a visit. He would have done better if he'd headed into Palgrave West to eat raspberries.

Mountain Biking (Single Track) 1:59:31 [3] 25.1 km (12.6 kph) +386m

'Bent and I rode over to Albion Hills and had a fun ride on a warm (but not hot) sunny day. I turned for home first since I didn't want to tire my legs out too much before tomorrow's ultra-long run.

It was all fun and games until someone caught her big 29er handlebar on a sapling and smashed down hard onto her right knee. My first thought was "meniscus". The next words that popped into my head - and out of my mouth - were even less nice. I won't know until I run on it for awhile. I definitely have trail rash but it didn't swell up. Fingers crossed.

There may have been a few raspberry picking breaks to make myself feel better.

While 'Bent was drinking coffee on the patio today, the dogs went crazy and he saw the black, shiny rear end of some creature disappearing into the forest. It looked not much bigger than BazingaDog (90 lb) and he didn't see its head but he wondered if it was a young bear. A few hours later, we learned there were 3 sightings of a yearling bear 5-6 km east of here yesterday afternoon. So we're thinking 'Bent may have seen that bear, who seemed to be a nice, polite fellow who reportedly just ambled around and ran away from humans.

According to the weather radar, I should have had a window for a short bike ride in Palgrave Forest. But instead of fading away, the thunder kept roaring louder and the sky looked evil to the northwest.

So it ended up being a *really* short bike ride! Got home just in time.

GPS missed the first 500 m so I used the bike computer distance.

SUP paddle before yoga class. Beautiful evening. Jill is going to Mali for 7 months of UN peacekeeping tomorrow morning so this is her last class of the year already.

Power Yoga 30:00 [1]

SUP yoga class. It was so hot that after the class was over, I deliberately tried a difficult pose that knocked me into the water as hoped.

Shorter hill session at Blue Mountain with 'Bent. Ran from the south parking lot, up Straight Up, down Village Way, up Cascade and down The Grind. I started feeling lightheaded halfway up Cascade - first time this weekend the heat really seemed to get to me. I cooled my head off in the stream twice, which was great except that I stumbled a few feet from the brink of a waterfall. Note to self: It's called the Cascade Trail for a reason - and when I'm feeling lightheaded, maybe steer clear of big drops!

We cooled down in the Village with iced mochas while listening to a good folk singer. Recovery food included delicious pie and coffee at the Tarnos' place. I ran a lot this weekend but there's no way I ran off all the calories!

'Bent and I celebrated Canada Day by parking at the lookout just south of Kimberley and slowly running a loop on Bruce main/side trails on both sides of the Beaver Valley. The extreme heat warning meant we had the trails to ourselves although we encountered a few people near some swimming holes enroute.

We'd both frozen our hydration bladders but - incredibly - 'Bent's refused to thaw even after 2.5 hours and he ran out of water. We actually had to take a break to leave it lying out in the sun on a black background - but even that didn't result in a lot of melting so he had to share my delicious ice water. I think my secret was forgetting to put the bladder in the freezer until 9 p.m. instead of doing it earlier in the day.

We had a terrific lunch at the Kimberley General Store where I inhaled a chocolate milkshake in about 30 seconds! Then we took the dogs for a walk on leash in Georgian Bay at Sunset Point Beach. We just learned that it's legal - yay! Lots of people were out enjoying the holiday weather. We followed that up with music in the park in Thornbury. Full tourist experience this weekend!
