Thanks to Funderstorm for today's treadmill video: Ginger Runner's interview of Jamil Coury before this weekend's Barkley Marathons.

If you are interested in following the Barkley, information and cell signal are scarce but the best place to watch is Twitter. You don't need an account.
Search for:

1) @keithdunn
and
2) #BM100

The start time is unknown. It could be anytime between Friday midnight and Saturday noon. It will be announced to runners by the blowing of a conch shell one hour in advance. Then the race starts when the RD Lazarus Lake lights a cigarette. There is a 60-hr cut-off.

One of the big stories is Gary Robbins' attempt to become the first Canadian ever to finish Barkley. He made it most of the way in his first attempt in 2016 before a nav error and a bonk. This year he attended some orienteering meets in Vancouver and he's been doing huge training weeks with monster elevation gains. He's looking good but anything can happen. Of more than 1,000 people who have attempted the race, only 14 individuals have been able to finish it, some of them more than once.

Mike Wardian and Jamil Coury are two other talented runners to watch. No woman has ever finished the Barkley so I will be cheering for all the women. Canada's Nicki Rehn is not returning this year.

The woman who originally placed 8th at Around The Bay on the weekend was wearing two chips - one for herself and one for a male friend. “This is something that is personal that people may or may not understand,” she said. Um, no, you don't get to play that card.

Also, she missed the 20K split - just zoomed straight from the 15K timing mat to the 30K finish line, running the final 15K in an unbelievable 50 minutes after taking 1:07 to do the first 15K. Pretty impressive for someone who ran ATB in 3:23 two years ago! Her story - that she was hurt and got help but just wanted to cross the finish line - might have been a tiny bit believable if she hadn't already been caught cheating with two chips. What amazes me is that people don't realize how hard it is to get away with cheating. She wasn't the only one caught.

Midday run on gravel roads plus a 2 km test of the Palgrave East single track, which was mucky and slow and will need to dry out a lot more. For some reason, I felt great today. I chatted with two men who are coming back to Palgrave Forest tomorrow to do some drone filming for a Stephen King movie. "We need shots of the wilderness!" Cool, apparently I live in the wilderness. :)

This was my first run in the redesigned Salomon Sense Ultras. So far, I really like them! Lightweight, comfortable, stable and a relatively wide toe box. The tread isn't as aggressive as my beloved Speedcross but it was fine for today. While it's still muddy here, I should test them on a steep hill and see how it goes.

The trails around here are sloppy after all the rain - even the rail trail - and I feel bad about damaging them. I could have done a road run but didn't feel inspired because it was miserable out. So I watched the final part of Eco Challenge Morocco 1998 and forced myself to keep running on the treadmill until it was over. I did four 4-minute intervals at what felt like 5K race pace although the treadmill didn't agree.

Some highlights from Eco Challenge:
- Exciting final leg!
- Young Mike Kloser and his team totally surprised when they made the top 10 and started moving up. (I won't give results in case anyone wants to watch it on Youtube.)
- Young, short-haired Paul Romero in his first race. Their rookie team Epinephrine won a lottery for the final spot available in the race. Young Karen Lundgren wasn't interviewed as much but she was there too. They did well in spite of Paul having to duct tape his sore quads.
- Young Rebecca Rusch was already the Queen of Pain.

Hockley Provincial Park route starting with the three side trails. I caught up on news from Dee, Mrs. Gally and Aud for the first 5.5 km, then sent them ahead so I could run at my own pace. That's twice as long as I'd thought I would last before waving the white flag so it's all good. I'm happy if I break 2 hrs on this loop but I missed by 18 seconds today. I'll blame the mud!

I took a break at the top of the loop to help a lost hiker. Does anyone else on AP feel like a magnet for lost people? I sometimes wonder if my forehead is engraved: "Just ask me how to get there!" It's understandable when I meet someone in the woods but last week a shopper blocked me at the top of an escalator in Sears to ask the way to the main mall rather than asking an employee. I didn't mind but I had to wonder: why me? And yesterday in Caledon East, I spent a long time with a lovely elderly lady who had tried to drive to Lakeshore and Parklawn in Toronto and ended up 40 km north before she realized something was amiss. She needed simple directions that didn't involve any 400-series highways, which was a challenge worthy of any navigation race I have done! I didn't want her to feel bad; I imagined my Mom in a similar situation. (Although my 84-year-old Mom would have whipped out her smartphone and used Google Maps, or else she would have programmed the GPS in her car. Then she would text me if she had any concerns. Techno-Mom!)

AdventureDog and I went for a sunny run around Palgrave East. The trails were 85% bare or lightly snow-covered, and 15% glare ice. There wasn't much mud because it got cold again last night. The trail was uneven with frozen footprints and bike tracks so it was a challenge for the ankles.

The lower inside part of my right knee got tweaked when I fell at Hockley on Sunday, and I could still feel it today. At the time, I was more worried about my hip since I'd fallen hard on it twice in three days but it seems fine. Note to self: Try to stay upright.

Bluebird day for a long run in Hockley Provincial Park with Browner, Yumi and AdventureDog. For our first round, we did the three Bruce Side Trails then ran back on the main Bruce Trail. Then we went out backwards, taking the main Bruce out and returning via the two southern side trails. (Our track is missing 1.8 km where I paused my Ambit but I've adjusted the data.)

The sun was shining, the temperature was perfect and the trail conditions were... a little bit of everything! On our first loop, there was a light layer of snow over frozen ground, hard snow or occasional ice. It was pretty good footing although I fell a couple of times on hidden ice, even with spiked shoes. Ironically, I'd suggested that it would be a great route to practise running with poles, which the others did. After all my skiing and TRX over the past week, I decided to leave my poles at home to work my legs harder and boy, did I miss them! When we went out for our 2nd loop, there was a lot more goopy mud than snow.

While we were running, STORM and 'Bent did a Hockley Loop with Scout and Contour, then politely waited at the Black Birch while the ladies slogged through the slow mud and arrived late to brunch - oops. Fun day, great company and yummy post-run meal!

I went to Hardwood Hills with my favourite leprechauns, 'Bent and Coach LD, and sent them off to ski fast together!

It warmed up considerably during the morning so I was glad for my waxless skis, even though they felt slow. It was a spectacular, sunny day and I went for many kilometres without seeing anyone. (The Irish hat didn't last long. It kept flying off on the downhills.)

In the last half hour, I tried to ski Seefeld, an ungroomed, single track classic trail. The tracks I followed didn't follow the trail properly and I ended up doing some unexpected bushwhacking on skis. I fell on a hill and managed to re-injure my right hip that hurt for a few days after the overseas flight two weeks ago - ugh. Other than that, it was an amazing March ski. We ran into Almageddon again; we're all hoping for a little more skiing but we know it will be over soon.

Tight for time so I watched more of Eco Challenge Morocco (1998) on the treadmill. Where I stopped today, they had just scrolled through the full rankings at that point in the race. I think FB was there - maybe on Team Adventure Spirit? There was also a Team Canada and a Team Outback Canada (Zietsma, Foster et al).

I did four ladder intervals totalling 13 minutes. I've recently figured out the miles vs. km issue on my treadmill although I suspect it just doesn't measure distance accurately in any unit. It seems wrong that at a high level of effort, I can run higher in kph on rolling trails than I can on this treadmill. And I was way too fast in mph before I sorted this out, not that it really matters. The important thing is that I'm getting to watch Eco Challenge again. :)

Here's a disturbing story from the world of trail running. Three-time English fell running champion, Lauren Jeska, pleaded guilty to attempting to murder a UK Athletics official last year. He survived life threatening injuries, and two other UKA staff members were stabbed as they intervened.

UKA had requested a hormone test after complaints that she might have an unfair advantage because she was born male. She was afraid she wouldn't be allowed to compete.

Today is my 12-year Attackpoint-iversary! On March 12, 2005 I did a winter adventure race at Hardwood Hills with navigation on skis, snowshoes and mountain bikes. It took almost 4.5 hrs and I wrote in my first-ever AP log entry that it was the best race of my life. That is probably still true. Out of 26 solo adventure racers, mostly men, I had the fastest snowshoe navigation section, led the solo category overall for awhile and finished in 2nd just a few seconds behind the top man. It will never happen again but it was amazing that everything worked so perfectly that day! I think Hammer, Tarno and... maybe Martin Rydlo? were the overall winners, racing as a team.

In honour of the occasion, I'll make a donation to Attackpoint. Thank you for everything, Ken!

Yay, Goose is finally able to fly again after his concussion! 'Bent, Goose and I went up to Hardwood Hills to find some real winter.

Here is our back yard today. BazingaDog likes it but it's not what our back yard should look like on March 12.

This is what things looked like at Hardwood Hills an hour north of here. This will be FB's new back yard!

If it were mid-February, I might have hoped for a little more snow to soften the trails and cover the debris but given the conditions elsewhere, I'd give Hardwood Hills an A+ today. It was supposed to be -20C with windchill but it felt a lot warmer as I skied in the sunshine. After the eastern half of the Sochi loop, I went back to the chalet to trade my hat, buff, gloves and vest for lighter versions then I did the hilly west side of the Lillehammer loop.

When we first arrived, we met a skier bundled up from head to toe with only his mouth and nose showing. We correctly guessed it was Al Magi hiding in there. Then Rick Sommerkamp showed up for an afternoon ski. I guess if you want to ski, this is one of the few choices.

There was a fat bike championship on the same trails we were skiing and it really wasn't a problem to share the trails, which was great. Maybe if I were skate skiing, it would be more of an issue but it was cold enough that most people were skiing classic today so we had our own lanes.

Fantastic to get out skiing again! I was afraid we might be finished for the season.

I got into photography in university and as a result, I am the proud owner of thousands of colour slides I never look at. For years, I've planned to scan them but let's get real: I won't. I will be too busy skiing or biking or doing laundry so I can go for a run or out for dinner.

I just did my first scanning test with a local camera store - our 2003 backpacking trip to Iceland. I'm going to try getting my next scans done by a place that does higher resolution and individual colour enhancement but it was a treat to re-live a journey that has been fading in my memories. Upper body: My main objective was to figure out a way to use our weight machine to simulate the motion of canoe paddling since we're doing the 40K Big East River X race in late May. It works but I'd only use it for strength training, not for an extended "paddling" session. I'll probably train on the kayak erg too since there's some overlap even though it's not canoe-specific. I'll be kayaking in Storm The Trent before the canoe race so I should do that anyway. At the rate winter is slipping away, we may be on the water soon! :(

My next races are the Zion 50K trail run, Storm the Trent and probably Raid the Rib, all of which are in my comfort zone. But on two consecutive weekends in late May and early June, 'Bent and I have a 40 km canoe race (no kayak paddles allowed) and a 100 km mountain bike race. We've done stuff like that in adventure racing but nothing *exactly* like that so we're trying to figure out how to get ready.

We'd rather be skiing this time of year but there is almost no snow on the ground so we kicked off our mountain bike season today by riding the Caledon Trailway. The Caledon section was mostly frozen hard with occasional skiffs of snow. We rode north of Hwy 9 to Tottenham and found a variety of conditions - ice, soft surface, mud and frozen. Then we turned around and came back into the wind. As expected, my old winter mountain bike shoes worked just as badly as they always have. My toes were icicles after an hour but the rest of me stayed warm.

Dontgetlost Eliminator Adventure Run
Rocky Ridge Ranch

This is the only map that has ever made me cry so I look forward to orienteering on it whenever the opportunity arises. After last weekend's race, I did a lot more walking than running today but that wouldn't have been a problem in this rocky terrain if I had just followed my bearing more accurately from #30 to #29. I see that my GPS track is a little too far east but unfortunately, I felt like I'd erred to the west so I looped around in the wrong direction when I realized I'd missed it, and then it was game over.

I didn't feel like backtracking farther to relocate, which I would do in a serious point-to-point race (and it's the right thing to do), so I just went for a walkabout to the west, hoping to recognize some larger features and get back in contact with the map. It was a beautiful sunny day and it was just nice to be in the woods. It took awhile; I went 27 minutes without punching any controls in a 2-hr race! I saw several friends, some looking confident and others not so much. I resisted the urge to ask for a hint. I eventually found #27 and started navigating for real again, scoring 2/3 of my points in the 2nd half of the race. On the bright side, this map hasn't made me cry since 2006 even though it still has the power to kick my butt sometimes. :)

'Bent had a great day, as did many of our friends. Two women cleared the course, which was impressive since only 3 men did that. Nice to catch up with friends afterward at the Mohawk Chop House, then visit Browner for coffee and doggie hugs from Scout and Contour.

It's improving but I still didn't want to run on it so AdventureDog and I went hiking on snow-covered trails. We cut it short because the wind was gusty and we didn't want to get hit by a falling tree. I'm going to try the Eliminator Adventure Run tomorrow - not the O Cup since that would tempt me to sprint and I am definitely not ready for that!
