Paddling (SUP) 30:00 [2]

Paddling at the C3 Quarry on a breezy night. Beautiful evening light. It's starting to feel like autumn is coming.

Power Yoga (SUP) 30:00 [1]

Lots of core and balance tonight. I fell onto the board once but didn't go for any swims.

Seeking advice from experienced parents... Our niece and nephew (ages 10 and 8) will be visiting for about 30 hours starting tomorrow afternoon. They live several thousand kilometres away so this is a first. They aren't allowed to watch TV at home so we'll have to limit any electronic babysitting. We have two friendly dogs and nice hiking trails but otherwise our rural life probably seems pretty dull to young visitors. Maybe we could excavate some board games from our childhood.

What is fun for kids that age? I'm not sure they are accustomed to entertaining themselves for long. Their other (better) aunt spends hours preparing fun crafts, baking projects, mysteries to solve, etc. but I figure they may as well get to know us as the boring people we really are!

Track & Tower Trail in Algonquin Park after a big breakfast. 'Bent and I have done this trail in pouring rain twice before so it was a nice change to see it on a cloudy day. Sunshine would be even better - maybe some day! We ran into almost no one on the trail - except a family we know from Bolton. There were a few good climbs to help us earn our lunch.

'Bent and I parked at Lake of Two Rivers Store and rode the connector trail to the Old Railway Bike Trail, which has been extended in the last couple of years. It isn't as smooth as the Caledon Trailway; some sections have loose gravel, sand or rocks but that makes it more interesting.

We rode out-and-back to the western terminus, then to the eastern end at Whitefish Lake. We could have extended our ride a little into the Pog Lake or Rock Lake campgrounds but otherwise we covered just about everything. It was fun and relatively fast although lots of people were out enjoying the trail today.

Whitefish Lake

We were stopped by a very confident spruce grouse who didn't want people to pass by on the trail while his wife was having lunch.

Paddling (Canoe) 53:00 [1] 4.74 km (5.4 kph) +3m

After too much yummy lunch (yet again), 'Bent and I headed to the north end of Little Joe Lake and followed the twisty creek until we hit a portage. We were able to paddle through a section that sometimes needs to be portaged. The weather was changing.

4 PM

Paddling (SUP) 15:00 [3]

There were SUPs so we had to paddle them too. And do a little yoga.

Then we went swimming in the lake but I'm such a poor swimmer that it doesn't merit logging. It felt great though. Light rain started falling while we were in the water. Perfect timing.

'Bent and I got off to a slow start with coffee, good books and a hot breakfast. There is no cell signal or Internet at the lodge, which feels like deprivation at first but ends up being wonderful.

Every time we went out to Hwy 60 for an excursion in the Park, I pulled out my phone to check Benoit Letourneau's progress at UTMB. He had a terrific race, breaking 35 hours and finishing well within the top 10%. He had a few long breaks that looked like naps so he was running quickly in between.

There are only three lodges in Algonquin Park so we have occasionally crossed paths with well-known Canadians at Arowhon Pines. This weekend there was an Olympic figure skater as well as the wife and children of a seriously ill Canadian singer whose well-loved band had a nationally televised concert last week. 'Bent had a brief chat with the Olympian; we left the others alone with their thoughts.

It was a spectacular day so we paddled from Little Joe Lake to Joe Lake.

In accordance with tradition, we paddled past the canoe campsite where we were married with 100 guests sitting on the rocks. It's a great site that is almost always occupied so we didn't get to walk down the aisle for our almost-20th anniversary.

After too much lunch and too much lazing around, we dragged ourselves over to the Centennial Ridges Trail near the Algonquin Visitors' Centre. This is one of the most beautiful trails in the park. It's rocky and rooty, and I moved cautiously to avoid twisting an ankle. I wish we'd come earlier so we could sit on the ridge and watch the clouds go by. Stunning views - and they'll be even better in a few weeks when the leaves change.

Runners and Animal lovers: The Furry Friends 5K is coming to Burlington on Sunday Sept. 11. Over the past 5 years, their Whitby event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for animal rescue charities. Our friend Caron Shepley, who has worked tirelessly to make Furry Friends a success, has added a 2nd event this year to help more charities but entries are currently lower than hoped.

Runners and walkers are welcome. Electronic timing is provided and there is a special category for participants with dogs. Great swag including a professional photo and an official race bandana for doggie participants. Please consider coming out on Sept. 11 or sponsoring 'Bent, who will be running with AdventureDog. I'll be running too but I want A-Dog to have the sponsors! :) http://www.furryfriends5k.ca/event/burlington

Funderstormin', Mrs. Tiny and Heidi came up for an evening Hockley run. We only did the first two side trail loops since our priority was dinner before the Black Birch closed at 9 p.m. After all the days with humidex of 35-40, it was a treat to run in moderate albeit humid conditions. Lots of chatting on the trails and one face plant by yours truly. Even before that, my right leg/knee/shin was feeling strange - and of course that's the one I landed on. Not sure what that's all about but it had better be nothing!

We followed the run with a great dinner, capped off with a surprise slice of birthday cake with a candle. Thanks so much, ladies - my favourite kind of party. :)

I rode to Albion Hills to meet Dee in beautiful, non-heat-wave weather. She is strong on the bike so it was hard work for me, which was awesome. I haven't seen her since Italy and it was great to chat.

We had a 3-hour ride planned but unfortunately I got a flat when we were at the north end of Palgrave Conservation Area. I've had very few flats in my life and am not quick to fix them. It would be like watching a video in slow motion so I didn't want to put Dee through it. I pumped the tire up and we rode to our place which, luckily, was just 1 km away. I drove Dee and her bike back to Albion Hills - so sad to bail but we'd had a pretty good ride.

I timed my flat tire fix and it's safe to say that Team Sky will not be hiring me anytime soon: 18 minutes!!! However, I found a tiny thorn embedded in my tire so I resolved both the symptom *and* the root cause of the problem. For someone with extremely basic bike repair skills, that counts as a huge win. I even got the bike computer working again!

UPDATE: 'Bent just came in the front door and said, "Your front tire is flat." Ugh.

UPDATE 2: Dr. 'Bent diagnosed a small puncture in the tube I installed. I was super careful to avoid a pinch flat so my guess is that the spare tube got damaged over the years of riding around in the seat pack with other tools. It's the same spare tube I carried at Tierra Viva in 2013 so it's been around a long time. Glad I used it today when it didn't matter.

Another hot, humid run - close to 30C with humidex of 35.

A few days ago, Dave Robinson asked if I'd found a way through the "mess" in the northeast section of the Hockley Loop (where the 3 Itches are). Apparently, Dave and WandAR tried to find a way through last week but finally gave up and returned the way they had come. I didn't know about any mess but 'Bent said the area had been logged when he ran the Loop with Leanimal and Goose last month.

I started my run at the north end of that section out of curiosity since it's one of my favourite places for hill training. It's always sad to see beautiful woods being logged but in a managed forest, it's not a surprise. The turn-off onto the Bruce Side Trail single track isn't marked right now but I was able to follow the usual route with the exception of a 30-40 m section where the trail disappeared into logging debris. When that happened, I descended the rest of the bare hillside to the double track and continued.

After the first 900 m, the rest of the trail is unaffected by the logging. I continued south over one more big hill to be sure. Heading back north, I found a detour sign where the logging started. Turns out the Bruce Trail wants people to head north on the East Access Trail and exit onto 15th Sideroad 500 m east of the usual entrance.

There is no detour sign at the usual gate off 15th Sideroad but if you continue farther east, you'll find the gate shown below. This trail joins the blue-blazed Bruce Side Trail with an unmarked left turn onto single track after about 900 m so the Loop distance remains the same with a little less climb. See my GPS track.

If you know the area well, you'll be fine but it's not a good plan to do the full Loop right now unless you're quite familiar with it.

I'm not training for mountains so I ran over to Mono Cliffs for the rest of my run. I took a 9-minute break around the 90-minute mark because it wasn't going to be worthwhile training unless I let the effects of the heat dissipate. I drank a bunch of water, ate another salt pill and a snack, and (most importantly) stood still in the shade until I felt some energy return. That gave me a second wind but I decided to cut half an hour from my plan. Hope this heat wave ends soon.

Afterward, I went to the Farmhouse Pottery Cafe on Hockley Rd. for a thick slice of their awesome strawberry rhubarb pie and an icy drink.

Small GPS adjustment because I messed up the on/off when I stopped to chat with some mountain bikers

There was a community viewing party for the Olympic men's triathlon at Caledon Town Hall this morning. We were cheering for Andrew Yorke, who grew up in Caledon East and belongs to our C3 club.

It seemed wrong to drive there so I decided to run but slept through my alarm - doh! That forced me to keep a steady pace, which was good. I carried a pack that included a thermos of 'Bent's coffee since I wasn't leaving home without finishing it!

Andrew usually starts a little back in the swim, then moves forward on the bike and run; today was no exception. He worked hard with Richard Murray of South Africa, who finished the swim behind Andrew and eventually placed 4th by seven seconds.

Unfortunately, Andrew crashed along with several others during the seventh of eight 5K bike laps. I haven't heard the story yet but one guy was slumped against the barrier with his carbon bike beside him, snapped in half. (He is fine - or as fine as anyone can be when their carbon bike has snapped in half.)

The crowd at Town Hall stared at the screen in silent horror as we realized it was Andrew lying on the pavement on his back with his bike partly on top of him. Fortunately, in the next shot, he was running in cycling shoes, pushing his bike and channelling his inner Froome. After half a km, he got a new wheel and finished the 8th lap with no one to draft. He couldn't dawdle since he would have been DQ'ed if the leaders had lapped him during their final lap. Then he ran 10K in to the finish to place 42nd of 55 racers. Canada's Tyler Mislawchuk, who had been riding in the same group at the time of the crash, finished 15th.

Good for Andrew for getting up and finishing his Olympic race, even though he must have been terribly disappointed and sore. It was a gutsy, classy effort. The poor guy was hit by a car last fall on his final training ride before the race where he'd hoped to secure his place on the Olympic team. Then in May, Canada *should* have secured Olympic spots for 3 men in the final qualification race but they didn't because one of the other Canadians had a minor bike crash and chose not to continue. As a result, there were only two places available on the Canadian team for three well-qualified men. It was a tough call by Triathlon Canada, and Andrew only got the nod a month ago. I'm sure that experience ensured that he will always race to the finish as long as his bike will roll and his body can keep up.

Olympic viewing parties are fun. Who's holding the Tragically Hip viewing party?

When I ran home, it was high noon and for some stupid reason, I thought I should try to maintain the same pace as in the morning. Oh, and I didn't have any water in my pack, just an empty coffee thermos. It went OK for awhile but I took a slightly tougher route, and as I climbed a hill while dripping with sweat in the 30-something humidex, I CRACKED (as Phil and Paul would say). I made a brief stop to bring down my HR, then walked the next few hills until I felt human again.

Now that jury duty is over, we can move on to the next unexpected interruption of our regular activities. 'Bent and I took BazingaDog to an orthopaedic surgeon today and made final plans for his major knee surgery on the Tuesday after Labour Day. He has the doggie equivalent of a torn ACL. Because of the difficult recovery, it will then be 12 weeks until 'Bent and I can both be away from home at the same time for more than a half a day. Lots of tag team days coming up.

Jury duty is done! We were instructed to bring overnight bags in case we needed to be sequestered in a hotel but we reached a verdict of Not Guilty before that was necessary.

It was an interesting experience to get a front seat view of our criminal justice system and explore difficult issues with eleven thoughtful strangers who all brought different wisdom and insights to the table. I came away feeling impressed and proud as a Canadian; I'd be glad to go back and do it again some day. (I'm now excused for 3 years.)

Huge congratulations to Charlotte Vasarhelyi for completing her self-supported, end-to-end run of the Bruce Trail in the wee hours! The total time was 16 days and (I'm estimating) 22 hours, which, coincidentally, is exactly how much time she had off work. :) She travelled through some of the hottest weather on record and had to take side hikes off the trail to find food and water. Because of the drought, many potential water sources had dried up. It looked like a tough journey with a much bigger pack than she had for her first Bruce Trail run. Well done!

Sunday Aug 14, 2016 #

Note

Monday morning our jury gets instructions from the judge. He says it will take most of the morning, then we'll be sent away to come up with a unanimous verdict. Obviously, this is daunting. We've been told to bring overnight bags in case we're sequestered in a hotel, and some of us are packing for two nights just in case. They will confiscate our cell phones and other methods of communication until we're done. Some stranger may phone to tell 'Bent I'm not coming home for the night since I'm not permitted to do that. If rumours are true, we may even be unable to get our daily fix of Olympics news. Interesting to learn how this all works.

Yumi, 'Bent and I ran from the 6th Line Nassagaweya north BT parking lot to Hilton Falls, then back by a different route. Before we started, I had a chat with IronJulie Parent, who was riding by. I had a few maps and a compass but didn't have a map of everything so we hit 6th Line too soon and had to run up the road a bit. Browner drove by and cheerfully offered us a ride but we decided to finish what we'd started.

Along the way, we met a couple of guys riding expensive bikes who were very knowledgeable about different MTB models I should consider in my search. I could have stayed and talked longer but we had a deadline. 'Bent stuck around a few minutes longer and discovered we had been chatting with Rider Mel, who writes mountain bike guides.

Browner did the Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race yesterday (and hit the podium!) so we excused her from the trail run but we still required her attendance for the bike ride. Yumi is a new mountain biker so we took double track where we could; she was a rock star when we got into technical trails by mistake.

'Bent was riding the rocks well on his new bike - until the shock failed and a custom only-one-in-the-world part fell off. This is the hardly the first time we've been in this situation. It took awhile to work out all the bugs in his previous recumbent mountain bike so I'm used to hearing things like, "Um, my handlebars just snapped off." So he limped out to the nearest road with his broken bike while the rest of us rode back to the parking lot.

After I'd driven around to rescue 'Bent, our group reconvened at the Flying Monkey for espresso drinks and huge slabs of carrot cake. Fun afternoon - except for poor 'Bent!

On my last two birthdays, I did overnight wilderness treks - the World Rogaining Champs and the Killarney Loop. Hockley Provincial Park loop - out via the three side trails and back on the main Bruce Trail. I tried to push out of my comfort zone, which I don't do often enough. While the sun was behind clouds, it was beautiful summer running weather. When the clouds faded away, it got steamy. I encountered 4-5 dozen hikers at different times, most of whom were great. Many of them called out encouragement and at least one hiker took a photo of the crazy runner lady. But there are always a few people who just don't like being passed on a trail, no matter how polite you are. Luckily, they're a small minority.

I feel pretty good about this run, especially since I'm dragging an extra 5 lb uphill compared to a month ago when we returned from Italy. No ice cream for me this week!

Whenever we thought we were done, another overflowing platter came out the door. We tasted a few nice wines and some 50-year-old port but after this morning's run, I drank more water than anything else - and espresso. The ride home from their place is uphill - oooofff. My date with the jury box has been delayed until Monday, then I'll be there every day until it's done - hopefully mid-August. I may spend my birthday in court - a first world problem indeed.

My main complaint with the judicial system so far is that we will be required to listen carefully to evidence for hours on end in a room where coffee is prohibited. Who ever thought *that* was a good idea?! The jury attendant told me she is supposed to bring a glass of water if she sees a juror nodding off. Hello! How about caffeine, people?

Today was my new jury duty date, deferred since it had conflicted with our trip to Italy. Out of a room of about 150 people, I was selected as Lucky Juror #1. So I will be attending a trial related to drugs, probably from this Friday until Aug. 15.

The biggest surprise today was that our jury ended up being 12 women, 9 of us white, most of us over 40. I would have thought the lawyers would want more diversity that represents the wider community. I was also surprised there were fewer men in the jury pool than women and the men were more likely to present some reason (poor hearing, medical problem, family issue, self employment) in hopes of getting off this jury.

One prospective juror said he couldn't answer the question of whether he could be unbiased and impartial, given the defendant's race (same as the juror's). Obviously, he was not accepted.

The lawyers would just look at a prospective juror, listen to them answer one question and observe them as they looked at the defendant. (Part of the process is an uncomfortably long "stand and stare" between the accused and the prospective juror.) More often than not, either the prosecution or the defence lawyer would reject a prospective juror, seldom for any reason I could guess. They went through 37 people until a full jury was selected.

It will be interesting, I think.

I finally got out for a run in Palgrave Forest at 6:30 p.m. I ran into my old friend Radek - which probably doesn't sound too surprising unless you know that he lives in Sydney, Australia! It wasn't a total shock since I knew he was visiting his parents in Brampton and we had planned to get together this weekend.

I ran like a sack of potatoes. The Ambit had a hiccup at the start.

Bug-out Day! Packed up camp and paddled on Louisa Lake to the portage trail, then paddled on Rock Lake up to the access point. We stopped near the cliffs to teach Teeny Tiny how to play "Echo!"

Great vacation! Fun to hang out and relax with Timato, Mrs. Tiny and Teeny Tiny. AdventureDog and Teeny Tiny were awesome on their first canoe trip.

(This GPS track includes both paddling and portaging.)

Portage from Louisa Lake to Rock Lake. We'd finished most of our food and drink so it wasn't as anaerobic as Friday's portage. I doubled back a short distance and took Teeny Tiny's pack. Boy, is she good at trail running when she's in the mood!
