XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 1:28:22 [3] 9.32 km (6.3 kph) +129m

'Bent's first ski around Castle Glen on a bluebird morning. Spring skiing!

Before and after, we chatted with the Millers and the Fords who were playing in the snow near the trail entrance.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed ) 2:05:21 [3] 16.22 km (7.8 kph) +226m

‘Bent and I drove around to the south end of Kolapore to do a loop with fewer treacherous hills than the area near our place. Turns out that was unnecessary, as the temperature had risen to +2C in the sunshine so Thursday’s ice had transformed into mashed potatoes. It was slow going in open fields and in deciduous forest. I had to double pole down most of the hills. The tracks in dense coniferous forests were slick and fast though. I got 8 Strava segment crowns including one overall “win” on a 20-minute segment. ?!? I think this new game is almost over for me now that adventure athletes are skiing at Kolapore though, lol!

Sunset snowshoe with ‘Bent, Darcie and 5 dogs. A mix of packed snow and deep, heavy snow that felt like knee-deep wet concrete.

XC Skiing - Skate (Groomed) 46:17 [3] 8.1 km (10.5 kph) +156m

Second skate ski of the season at Scenic Caves and it felt foreign. Although we have season passes at two ski centres that we bought before the pandemic, we’ve been staying away while we have other options that most people don’t have. Now that Kolapore isn’t in good shape, we met Denise and the Gallys for a skate ski.

I’d warned them that I haven’t been skate skiing this year so I’d send ‘Bent with them and stay back on my own after a short, sociable warm-up. When I say something like that, it’s based on objective facts - not false modesty or a veiled request to be accommodated. I rarely skate ski and much prefer to do it alone but sometimes people feel rude about leaving me if I ask them to ski ahead at their own pace - and then I feel like I’m ruining their ski, no matter how nice they are about it. Today was one of those days so I headed back to switch to classic.

XC Skiing - Classic 51:35 [3] 7.37 km (8.6 kph) +116m

I skied out to the Wild Goose area to meet with with Denise and Mrs. Gally for a few loops. I chose waxable classic skis but the tracks were glazed so I should have used a much warmer wax than I chose. Great double poling and herringbone exercise!
3 PM

Snowshoeing (Ungroomed ) 30:00 [1] 1.0 km (30:00 / km)

Family snowshoe through deep snow around the property.

‘Bent fell into a tree well and got stuck. The tree wasn’t even as tall as he is! :)

We discovered that on a sunny day in winter when the leaves are off the trees, there is a view of Georgian Bay from parts of our property - if you really squint. That has to be worth an extra 25% when we sell it some day. ;)

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed ) 1:20:36 [3] 7.79 km (5.8 kph) +159m

Treacherous Kolapore ski before dinner with ‘Bent. Our beautiful powder has a thick crust on top, and the trails are glazed. :( It was pretty in the woods but it was not always fun. I was reminded of the way Arthurd described deep, icy ski tracks in her log years ago: “death canyons”. We’ll stick to novice trails here until the temperature rises and softens the snow.

Note

Twenty years ago today, an impaired driver - a repeat offender - hit Richard's parents on a weekday afternoon. Richard's Mom spent a month in hospital and had a long, difficult recovery. Tragically, we lost his Dad.

Two decades later, we've been reflecting on the huge, continuing impact of one driver's decision to have two beers with lunch, which put him well above the blood alcohol limit.

Dr. Ehrlich only got to enjoy a few weeks of semi-retirement after dedicating many years to patients in his family medical practice. His family lost their loving husband, brother and father. Richard lost his mentor in health care. Many good friends have dearly missed his company. He and my mother-in-law never got to go hiking around the world or spend time together in retirement. He never met his grandchildren or their mother so they only know him through stories. His community lost a caring volunteer. He never got to use his new snowshoes, attend his younger son's wedding or grow old. The list goes on and on as we imagine an alternate universe where that driver chose a non-alcoholic beverage on a snowy day.

There is no neat conclusion to this post. I'd like society to keep moving toward taking impaired driving more seriously. Some people may think we're already there but we're not. If an impaired driver is not involved in a collision (the word "accident" is inaccurate), many people view that offence as less serious or less deserving of jail than other crimes, especially when the criminal is an otherwise respectable person. Many people find it difficult to speak up when a friend shouldn't drive. Some people have trouble limiting their own drinking before they drive. There is still a long way to go but we can make a difference for other families.

I've signed up for the CMTR Spring Scavenger Hunt, which runs from March 1 to April 30. This time, the 20 challenges were invented by participants in the Winter Scavenger Hunt. I know two Attackpointers who won free entries because their challenges were selected out of hundreds. Congrats!

"Our fundraising effort for the Spring Scavenger Hunt will be the same as our Winter event - a 50/50 split between BC Food Banks and our new CMTR Scholarship Fund. Our Scholarship Fund, supported by Salomon, provides under-represented and under-privileged people that want to start running with gear, training and event entries, with the aim of removing barriers to entry."

I was surprisingly sore today. Spending hours XC skiing on bumpy, hilly backcountry trails uses every part of your body. Good!

XC Skiing - Classic 2:22:17 [3] 14.98 km (6.3 kph) +295m

I hadn't skied the Northwest Passage at Kolapore this season, and with the temperature climbing above zero next week and compressing our fluffy snow, I figured today might be the safest day for it.

Northwest Passage is a challenging 7.5 km trail that includes a 2.5 km steady downhill, some long, steep climbs and an often terrifying descent with a rocky creek in the middle of it that isn't always snow-covered or frozen. (Yeah, I fell.) The Bruce Trail shares the same route for short distances so there are always sections that have been stomped by hikers or snowshoers. To get there and back from our place adds another 7.5 km.

It was another spectacular ski day. This winter has been almost impossibly good for snow, temperatures and sunshine. It doesn't take the sting out of the pandemic but it does take our minds off it for hours at a time.

Following up on last week's totally unexpected discovery that I can earn Strava crowns by skiing at Kolapore, I got the crown for the Northwest Passage today, which is extra special for this reason.

I predict that will change by next weekend, given the terrific ski conditions.

Snowshoe with Mark and Jackie Tarno and 3 dogs.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 3:00:00 [2] 14.02 km (4.7 kph) +244m

Jackie’s first tour of Kolapore on another spectacular day. She has excellent skills from all her downhill and skate skiing experience but her borrowed classic skis were set up for a heavier person so she couldn’t get much grip. In spite of that, we had a fun catch-up on the Dhaulagiri Loop minus the climb. We were hit by snow squalls for a while, which made things extra amazing.

3 PM

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed ) 2:00:00 [3] 9.69 km (4.8 kph) +165m

Darcie texted to see if we wanted to go out for a ski. We were tired but it was hard to say no on such a brilliant day. It’s great to see her enthusiasm for her new sport even though the ski hills have reopened, and she had already spent most of the day there. So ‘Bent and I joined her for the main loop in the late afternoon sun. We ran into Stephen Couchman twice! Otherwise, the trails were very quiet today.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 1:55:00 [3] 10.64 km (5.6 kph) +210m

'Bent and I went for a late afternoon ski around Kolapore, which has a *lot* of snow.

It's warming up though, and I'm getting nervous. I saw slush along the highway, which means spring skiing is coming, and I am *not* ready to give up winter yet. Coach LD and Goose are smart to go to Yellowknife next week. :)

But for today, it was still winter and we had a wonderful ski with lots of stops so 'Bent could take GoPro footage. (I deducted some time.)

He also put up a new sign to keep snowshoers off our connector route between the Bruce Trail and the ski trail network. Several groups of hikers have followed our bushwhacking tracks off the Bruce Trail, then they've walked on the ski trails. Ugh, guilt.

We ran into Mr. and Mrs. Gally! She was feeling off after getting her 2nd dose of Pfizer vaccine yesterday. Best reason ever to feel unwell.

'Bent flew down the western Wild Mouse trail. I'd hoped to take video but there was no time to set up the camera for that.

I recently discovered that I have the Strava QOM (Queen of the Mountain for non-Strava users) segment on the eastern Wild Mouse climb. Bob has the KOM. The first QOM happened by accident but today both of us gave it a good shot. 'Bent is still 2nd to Bob, as he was before - now by 7 seconds. I took a big chunk off my time though, extending my lead over the 2nd place woman to 2 minutes. Strava helpfully pointed out that I only need to cut out another 39 seconds to catch Bob, lol. I find this hilarious. Speed has *never* been my thing so it's weirdly fun to have the chance to think that way in this tiny corner of sport.

XC Skiing - Classic (Groomed Trail) 1:53:33 [3] 9.0 km (4.8 kph) +188m

I met Tracy Roth for a tour of Hockleycrest. She's another avid snowboarder who has taken up cross-country skiing this winter. She has the right skills, and she got braver as we skied. We managed to get down most of the toughest hills in the trail network with no incidents. Weirdly, her Garmin measured 13.4 km while my Ambit measured 9 km. That seems low so hers may be right. My watch also measured 2400 m of elevation gain and said we went more than 900 m below sea level. Um, no.

XC Skiing - Classic (Groomed Trail) 1:12:19 [3] 9.57 km (7.9 kph) +195m

We had another dump of fresh powder overnight and through the morning! I had an errand that took me in the direction of Albion Hills Conservation Area so I stopped for a ski enroute. I had my heavy backcountry skis because I expected to be breaking trail through deep snow but I couldn't have been more wrong. The grooming was as good as I've ever seen it.

I only saw one other person and he was lying in the snow at the base of an uphill trail. Rather than embarrass him by hovering and waiting, I carried on and took a different route up the hill. Turns out they don't groom that section of trail so I got to do some floundering in deep powder after all.

They currently require reservations for a particular date but you can go at any time. That may ease off with the next random shuffle of Covid colour zones.

Nice sunset tonight!

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 2:00:14 [3] 9.19 km (4.6 kph) +50m

Shannon, Denise and I went for a ski tour around Castle Glen - my first time there. It's not maintained for skiing but it's really nice! We didn't encounter anyone in 2 hours. That also meant we had to break trail through fluffy snow the whole way but that's OK. I had snow up to my knees in a few places! Beautiful morning with snow squalls passing through. :)

P.S. Elevation profile and total gain is all wrong - too low this time.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 1:09:19 [3] 6.77 km (5.9 kph) +187m

Conditions were so amazing that I had to go for another ski, this time in Kolapore. 'Bent had worked hard breaking trail with Tarno this morning but it wasn't hard to convince him to join me for a quick jaunt around some of the northwest trails.

Timato, K-Way and Aubrey came to pick up our Adventure Van, which is joining their family. While they were in the neighbourhood, we went for an easy snowshoe over to the Bruce Trail with the dogs. It was a perfect winter day!

Then we had a campfire and played in the deep, fluffy snow.

Dee's kids started the tradition of jumping off our deck into the snow drifts.

Even Timato jumped!

The toboggan hill wasn't slippery enough today so BazingaDog helped out.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Note

Yesterday I got two emails from Strava: "Uh oh! Shannon has taken your crown." What?!

I rarely post workouts on Strava but apparently, I had the women's crowns for two segments of Kolapore ski trail. I was bummed - not because Mrs. Miller had taken my crowns but because I never imagined I would ever have any Strava crowns. And now they were gone and I never even had a chance to enjoy them.

With a little research, I learned that I still have one other crown from 2 years ago. Out of curiosity, I uploaded 10 Kolapore ski GPS tracks from the past 12 months, which gave me three more. It's all quite hilarious and unbelievable. Leaderboards are one of the aspects of Strava that have made me feel like I don't belong there. I'm slow and I don't want to feel like I'm in a competition while I'm training.

There are two that look like this. Yup, that's how I roll - sharing crowns with Bob.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 4:02:45 [2] 14.11 km (3.5 kph) +300m

While 'Bent and Bob did a long, speedy loop around Kolapore, I took our neighbour Darcie out for her first serious ski loop. She's a snowboard instructor and triathlete who has borrowed her Mom's old XC skis because the downhill ski clubs have been closed. Skiing in Kolapore isn't for beginners but she stayed in control and did very well. We were out for almost 2 hours before we met anyone else on such a cold morning - and of course, it was Bob and 'Bent! After that, we met a handful of others but we almost had the place to ourselves. Awesome, chatty fun.

My Ambit3 has lost its mind recently when it comes to elevation gain. Today was a typical outing - about 11,000 meters of climb. My high point was 12,520 meters - about 40% higher than Mount Everest. Cool! Last week I switched to the Suunto app after their repeated threats to those of us who hadn't done so yet. So far, they're not impressing me.

We gave her two old pairs of ski boots and some chocolate croissants. She gave us fresh-baked challah, which has become a regular treat on Friday nights. I love winter.

I spent a few hours sorting through the Orienteering Ontario archives since I'm hoping to park in our garage one of these winters.

One thing that has surprised us as we dig through the boxes is the huge pile of cartoons that were apparently required by provincial orienteering associations 30 years ago.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 2:30:00 [3] 15.0 km (6.0 kph) +407m

Spectacular, chilly day with perfect fluffy snow and a mix of sunshine and snow squalls. 'Bent and I went for a long ski to a high viewpoint where I got out the buttertart that I'd carried along for the occasion. It was so cold that I had to scarf it down quickly so we could start skiing down. We met Bruce and Val King skiing with Richard Ellen; they're all old friends of 'Bent's. We also met and chatted with a skier, John Fallis, and a couple of snowmobilers - Cavan (also a mountain biker) and his friend. It's been ages since I've spoken with so many humans in real life in a 2-hour period. Thank goodness for the great outdoors!

Snowshoeing (Ungroomed) 1:00:00 [1] 3.32 km (18:05 / km) +206m 13:48 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro GTX - Black

Snowshoe outing with 'Bent, our neighbours Darcie and Marla, and 5 dogs. Shortly after we started, we saw a dog crossing a snowy field without an owner. Then we ran into neighbours we hadn't met before - Tom and Lisa - and they had met the owner looking for their dog. So we did some detective work as we hiked. We found tracks in a few places but didn't find the dog again. We learned tonight that the dog made her way home after dark. She'd been off-trail a couple of kilometres from home on a very cold day so that was great news.

Snowshoeing (Ungroomed) 22:00 [1] 1.23 km (17:50 / km) +72m 13:47 / km

Short snowshoe around the front part of the property with the pooches. The wind was too gusty to go into the forest. BazingaDog kept sneaking back onto the driveway to avoid the deep snow but AdventureDog was a rock star, leading the way with his ears plastered straight back for some reason. Maybe that's what the dogs do when they break trail in the northern Québec community he lived in until six years ago this week.

XC Skiing - Classic (Ungroomed) 1:09:40 [2] 4.48 km (3.9 kph) +100m

Deep snow ski with 'Bent and our neighbour Darcie. I described the conditions as "Antarctic" because the snow squalls were blowing so hard that we wanted to stay on fields or in areas with short, young trees, i.e. away from older trees with dead branches. I flirted with frostbite but it was all worth it when Darcie gave us fresh-baked challah to ski home with.

Snowshoeing (Ungroomed) 40:04 [1] 1.74 km (23:05 / km) +88m 18:26 / km
shoes: Salomon XA Pro GTX - Black

Mostly deep snow including one long section with fallen trees, rocks and woody debris beneath the snow. At one point, I plunged into a deep hole and got my foot stuck between tree branches. 'Bent and the pooches would have helped me but I wanted to figure out how to extricate myself in case this happens when I'm alone some time. I had to reach way down into the hole and manipulate my snowshoe until it came out the same way it slipped in. By that point, I was snowy up to my neck. Fun...?! :)
