British champs long distance at High Dam
A strange one - had a bit of a mental battle in the first half to keep going when it didn't feel like it was going well, and picked up in second half.
Started nicely to no1, through the open and down into reentrant. Control 2, I lost time by coming out too far right at the lake then generally hesitant until I was on the nice bit of slope leading down to the control. Caught Kim here but next few, I kept losing time in the circle, unable to read the detail at 1:15. Long leg to 7, Kim was strong up that hill and I saw her disappear into the distance (also started thinking about not racing the rest of the course - 'should I really push if I'm not feeling great and have exams and estonia coming up?' - and took a really, really long time to get up the hill).
But to my surprise at control 8, I caught both Kim and Julie. Led for a couple of controls and got away after 10. Catching them perked me up a lot and despite losing time in circle at 11 and 12, the orienteering felt a lot more flowy, probably because i could read the map better here. Felt fine through spectator and only had a short loop left so didn't take my gel. Except for a small mistake at 18, the rest was fine and was nice to see Rona in the last loop :)
2nd, 3:30 off Tess
Looking forward to doing more long races in future :)
