Stokeville rogaine (24 hrs). 2nd OA, 1st div. location cave mtn sp.
Matt and I met in VA, for the stokesville rogaine put on by TanZ navi (mark and Laura). Good times. Tough course. Not a huge field however a very capable field. After camping friday night, and me getting poor quality sleep despite Matt's gracious sleeping comforts he brought for me, we awoke, got checked in and received maps for planning.
We planned away for nearly 2 hrs. Of course we were ambitious in trying to clean the course, but it was becoming apparrent that it would be difficult. There was a fair amount of cleverly placed CPs on massive climbs along the way; if you wanted points, you were going to have to earn them, no doubt.
We decided to start on the north side of the course, and the we would not be coming back to HQ, so we packed everything we needed for 24 hrs.
The course had a significant amount of elevation and wanting to taking aggressive lines initially to take advantage of daylight and fresh-ish legs we pushed. We made a minor error in pushing to hard at first, as we both eventually over cooked in the springtime higher humidity and warmer temps. About hour 8 we were both not feeling well and taken a bit off guard. We backed off by necessity, and drank plenty of water/electrolytes, and mostly recovered by nighttime. With solid nav we progressed well.
Matt and I revised our plans several times, and it would have been hilarious to listen to our, at times, sleepy and disconnected conversations, as we were staying connected with a race plan.
Matt is a warrior, and unfortunately he began to develop some foot pain, likely a fasciitis, which he had never experienced before. We were doing a fair amount of climbing/descending. Matt was forced to slow down, but he never mentioned quitting.
With about 8 hrs, left we devised a 4th or 5th or 6th (not sure by that time...lol) revision of routes.
We picked off a few of the closer higher value CPs enroute back to HQ.

Beautiful area and definitely a tough course. Thanks TanZ nav for putting it together!!
