Cortina Trail Race Report (48K)
Cortina Trail was my first true mountain ultra, all thanks to the goading of Dee and Bash (amongst other APers), who were there to complete the much longer Lavaredo Ultra.
The course involved a single loop up, down and around the mountains on one side of the town of Cortina, Italy. The race bibs included an upsidedown view of the course profile, with the aid stations and cut off time, making for an easy reference along the way.
We rolled out of our apartment 50m from the start line and had a normal 8am start (unlike the others who started at 11pm the night prior). We headed out along a cobblestone street lined with hundreds of people cheering us on like rockstars. I started with Storm and Bent who took off flying and I never saw them again.
Needless to say, the climbing started almost immediately, but this just made for absolutely phenomenal scenery every step of the way. With 2600m of ascending, I decided to set an easy goal of 10 hours and was thrilled to have beaten it. I power hiked with poles all the ups and enjoyed my time out there as part of a solid train of slow moving people for most of the race.
Everything worked out great: climbing was fine at a steady pace, feet taping, nutrition, cooling strategy, poles etc. My only issue was my bum knee which stiffened up on the steep decents and forced me back to a walk at times, but somehow it sorted itself out later on and I was able to run/push on the last 10kms into town.
I really loved this course (did I mention it was a single loop), the longer distance was fine, and now I just need to work on speed and getting out of aid stations faster. I think I’ll stick with 50 km trail runs for a while now, but this one will be tough to top.
