ahr:98 max:117 shoes: Alpacka Gnu

109 to Sherman Beach in the Gnu w Erl.

testing out "bento box" for me and a waterproof speaker.

we saw a juvenile bald eagle w parent! so cool. we paddled right underneath them and we all stared at each other.

Run 1:17:22 [3] 4.71 mi (16:26 / mi) +566ft 14:45 / mi
ahr:129 max:159 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser #3 blue M8

from Sherman Beach to Erl's truck at Bluffview horse parking lot. hey, if they're going to spend millions on a stupid parking lot, at least we are going to use it to our advantage. run felt SO MUCH better than yesterday. probably a 14# pack, same as the 4th.
4 PM

ahr:132 max:171 shoes: Niner Air9 RDO

Bike 1:08:37 [3] 13.18 mi (11.5 mph) +5ft
ahr:176 max:187 shoes: Niner Air9 RDO

Dirt Crits A and B races. i felt i didn't quite belong in the As but didn't want to race for only 20ish minutes in the Bs. so just hung out at the back of the As and tried to chase down Mary, i was catching her but then the leaders started lapping me so i was slowing down to let them around.

in the Bs i was pretty much last at the start but moved up a couple spots, passed Marcy and stayed ahead.

i think my fastest lap out of everything was the last one of the Bs which is good for fitness. i would gain on the straightaways but lose time in the twisty sandy turns. excellent handling practice and sorely needed!

Paddle 4:47:20 [3] 19.49 mi (4.1 mph)
ahr:98 max:127 shoes: Alpacka Gnu

paddle in the Gnu w Erl on the Meramec River...er...Lake. put in at 109 bridge and went downstream, we got to see the big flag right away which was cool on July 4th. water levels were lower than a couple weeks ago. so the first half, there were some portions w current but pretty much after Sherman Beach/Castlewood area the current stopped. seriously, we were paddling past sticks and small logs that were just stationary! we were def ready to be done at Greentree.

stopped twice on gravel bars to add air to the Gnu. first time the main valve had gotten loose so just re-tightened it and added air. second time just a top off. also good chances to stretch/pee.

we saw a bald eagle at Sherman Beach!

ARWC has 2 packrafting sections for a total of 40 miles. so this effort may come close to what we will see in Wyoming. it was not easy but it was definitely doable.

ideas for improving comfort:
--webbing/pool noodle for back brace for me
--gear ties/pool noodles for beam "saddle" for me
--cordage/mesh bag for front food pouch/clue sheet holder for me.
--add carrying handles front and back

don't want to get too doo-dad-y w packraft accessories but these might help.

we also put our packs inside the center beam which was great. we only had our PFDs, paddles, and 2 bottles accessible. plenty for this length paddle in these conditions.

Erl got a cool sunburn :)

overall, despite its slowness with no current, i still love the Gnu!
2 PM

Run 42:50 [3] 3.55 mi (12:04 / mi) +339ft 11:04 / mi
ahr:141 max:157 shoes: Salomon Speedcross M8 blue

took out at Greentree, loaded all packraft gear in our packs, and shuffled/hiked up to Alpine Shop.

packs were 14# for me, 21# for Erl.
i had 6/8 paddle pieces, PFD, my Tevas, a bottle, some water, couple drybags. Erl had the Gnu, 2/8 paddle pieces, his PFD, a bottle, some water, couple drybags. both of our packs were voluminous but not terrible. for once, i got my PFD securely centered and fastened!

otherwise just a run on roads/sidewalks thru Kirkwood to the Shop.
3 PM

Bike 2:04:46 [3] 26.36 mi (12.7 mph) +1411ft
ahr:133 max:171 shoes: Salsa Warbird

Erl had brought our bikes in last night so they were all ready! changed shorts, had a Coke, and chatted w Alpiners as we TA'd to bike. we opted to keep carrying most of our raft gear but left our trekking shoes at the Shop for later pick-up.

so then just rode EZ w our big packs back to the car at 109. down Marshall Rd after remembering that BB is closed, loop of the new Dirt Crits course, greenways across 141, stop at gas station for a big lunch, then over to Rock Hollow greenway/Al Foster, up and over Alt Rd, then thru Eureka to car. a pretty nice route and i'm thankful for all of the paths and bike lanes that we got to use. certainly not 100% linkable but def useful and appreciated!
