Adventure Race 10:12:00 [3]

Off Road Rage 12hr AR w Jeff and Jason Bettis of Team Kuat.

there were not enough canoes for all teams so we had a draw at the start on which discipline to start on...trek, bike, or paddle. we drew bike, along w Toporadicals!

BIKE 1, 40k
around the south side of Lake Perry. we were a bit late to start due to last-minute map prep (old USGS map, outdated roads and no trails...lots of copying) so we took off in back of pack. caught everyone by the 1st CP but the first 4 CPs it seemed all took some hunting so we were in the group for all of them. we were able to get away a bit but came in to TA in 2nd place to a 2p male team. also in the pre-race frenzy i forgot my tracker so no gps track. headwind most of the time so we did a lot of double-towing!

TREK 1
at Military Trail area. longest trek of the race...about 2hrs? thick veg made it hard to see stuff but not a ton of thorns. Jason was super good at moving thru it so i just tried to keep up! cool rocky trails that we used for a bit.

BIKE 2, 20k
around the north end of Lake Perry to the MTB trails. mostly gravel/pavement but a short bit on secret singletrack, more rocky! more double towing.

TREK 2
at the MTB trails area. this was supposed to be a bike but was switched at pre-race mtg due to wet forecast. honestly it was better as a trek i thought. we didn't get a trail map so it was a lot of guess work on Jason's part, knowing when to use trails (they were packed in there) vs. when to cut thru. but he was focused and really clean!

BIKE 3, 5k
back to Race HQ, short n sweet.

TREK 3
around the Race HQ area. thick vegetation and hard to see contours. some tricky CP placements but again Jason was super clean and me and Jeff just tried to keep up! we had a cool team nav moment en route to CP1, it was a long leg but we kept track of our location and hit it well.

PADDLE 1, 4k
short out n back but it was super windy so a good thing. also race rules were only 2 paddlers per boat so i sat in the middle and navved. it was awesome!!

overall this was a good race, we worked super well together as a team and fun to hear Jason's stories as well. the maps were tough to work with and veg was thick, but he did a great job. i felt better physically than i was expecting! so happy to be able to push the pace. beautiful weather too, despite the wind, and happy to be out in the sunshine.
